ALINA
I chuckled, reading the power move in seconds. I went around the room, greeting the men who were older than me.
Mikhail was sitting just beside Roberto, glaring at him.
I stopped beside Roberto. “You're in my seat.”
Roberto smirked, chuckling just under his breath. “Actually, you do not have a seat at this countil any longer.”
“I see you've decided you want to lose another limb.” I said to him, dropping a look at his missing body part.
Roberto’s lips thinned angrily as his face was suffused with color. He shot an angry look at Luca who barely spared him a glance.
He pushed me away from him, pushing his chair closer to the table. I barely steadied myself before I heard his head slam against the desk.
“Shit!” Roberto grunted. “Uhhhhh.”
Luca had his arms around me, steadying me on my feet, and another hand around Roberto’s head, pressing his head into the desk.
“Are you steady, Sunshine?” He asked me, his gaze on my face, his brows tight with worry.
I nodded, forcing my heart to settle. It was fluttering like a bird under my breast. When I felt calmer, I stepped away from him and called Mikhail.
“Let him go.” I said to Luca through clenched lips.
Luca looked displeased with the words, but he stepped away from Roberto who had blood staining his head.
“Mikhail, you're going to take my uncle outside. If he resists even for a second, please do not hesitate to shoot him dead.” I gritted out calmly.
Whispers ran through the room. Mikhail stood like he had been waiting for the command and dragged Roberto from the chair.
Roberto swore, and staggered as he was shoved forward. He fought against Mikhail, but Mikhail was much stronger and only manhandled him with a grunt.
Roberto was always creating trouble for himself. I sat on the chair.
Enzo exploded out of his seat and stood, his shoulders shaking with rage as he swore in my face. “Fuck you, Alina. How dare you humiliate him that way? He's your uncle!”
I gave him a slow, indolent smile. “Is he? Did we not watch together as he tried humiliating me? Besides, I rather remember that he shoved me first, and that I wasn't the one who hit him. Why don't you swear at Luca instead?”
I turned to smile at Luca and then lifted my brow as I waited for Enzo's reaction. When he didn't say a word, only shaking like a mad dog, I chuckled.
“I see that you don't mind screaming at women, but a man your own size scares you huh?” I laughed aloud, enjoying the look of miserable anger on his face.
He clenched his fist impotently, but I was already done with him.
Luca broke in suddenly, his deep voice creating shivers down my spine. “Is there anyone else in this room that believes my wife does not deserve to sit where she is now?” He asked.
I could have heard a pin drop in the deadly silence that descended on the room. Luca nodded. “I thought so too.”
I turned to the rest of the men gathered at the table, fighting the smile that tried to bloom on my face. “I heard that a meeting was held without my permission.”
Shame-faced and pissed, Enzo answered. “Yes. I have invoked the authority of this council to hold a meeting. You might be the head of this council, but we are the neck, and we see that the head is doing wrong.”
I couldn't help the chuckle that burst from my throat. “And you did that with the permission of these men here?”
Alberto interrupted before the men could answer and I knew immediately that my uncles had forced them to show up. “Does it matter? Enzo has been informed by a credible source that your brother, Adriano, has decided he does not wish to take over the Mafia at eighteen.”
Mutterings and mumbles filled the room. The man shifted restlessly, most watching me with suspicious eyes.
I narrowed my eyes on Alberto. “Since I have not heard those words from my brother, then I will assume you are lying.” I said smoothly.
Enzo sparked, glaring at me as he slammed his fist against the table. “You lying bitch! You know Adraino said those particular words!”
Unbothered by his display of childish anger, I stood and grabbed my bag off the table. This meeting was over. I had a lot more to do than sit here and argue with Enzo and his father.
“This meeting is over.” I fixed a deadly, frigud stare on the rest of the council, holding each man's eyes until they looked away. “Best believe I will fight anyone who stands with Enzo and his father in this war. My father has always protected each and everyone of you, but if you choose to leave me now, I will be just as brutal as he would have been, and death will be the only way out.”
With those words, I took Luca’s hand and we walked out together. Pietro and Mikhail followed us.
Immediately we stepped outside, Luca lifted me into his arms and kissed me hard. “Oh my goodness, you were glorious in there!”
He groaned against my lips, kissing me until my lungs burned.
I pulled away, gasping as I dragged air into my body. “I was, wasn't I?” I giggled, biting his lip gently.
“I knew my wife was fierce, but damn, Alina, you lit a fire in their asses today.” He breathed, slapping my ass.
Pietro cleared his throat and I flushed as I remembered where we were. “You might want to keep that for your rooms. The men will be out here soon.”
I nodded and Luca let me slide down his body, holding my fingers tightly as we walked out into the sun. We were almost in my car when I heard a shout.
“Alina?!”
I turned to find Roberto. Blood still stained his head, dripping out onto his shirt.
He looked crazed, his eyes wild as his entire body trembled with bottled rage. “You bitch! I told you someday you would get what was coming to you.”
As we watched, he lifted his gun and fired.
My legs turned to jelly as panic set in.
