The final bell rings for fourth block, but Olivia isn't here and I worry right away. She's always in by the warning bell. Sure, she might actually just be running late, but that's unusual for her.
As our teacher starts class I pull out my phone, texting Olivia as my nerves skyrocket. Especially when I know she's staying with Divine and Admira, that Admira doesn't have legal guardianship over Olivia, that her dad could easily come and get her, I go reeling.
Lexi slips into Olivia's usual seat and I groan. Of course she takes this as her opportunity. "Hey babe."
"Go back to your seat, Lexi." Of course, our teacher dismisses us to do our assignments today so she can't get in trouble for talking or anything. Her hand is on my thigh and I move my chair, annoyed already and very fucking uncomfortable. "Seriously Lexi, go."
"Babe, what's the matter?" I roll my eyes, pushing her hand away from mine, worrying when I don't get a text back from Olivia. "Oh... she finally left you?"
"Finally left me? The fuck Lexi? God leave me alone." To think I ever tried being friends with her.
"I can help you?" Her hands back on my thigh, getting way too fucking close to my certain area, so I slap her hand away, not caring if it hurt or anything. "What the fuck Adrian?"
"She didn't leave me." We haven't even been dating for 3 hours, so I'd hope not. Oh my god-she's my girlfriend. Everytime I think about that fact, my heart races. "So leave me alone."
"Why're you being such a dick?" I scoff, then laugh at how fucking oblivious she seems to be.
"Because, you can't get it through your head that I don't want you, Lexi." That might be a bit mean, but I don't care anymore. Not when I'm worrying about the girl I actually want about why she's not in class, or answering my texts as I send another one.
"And you want that bitch Olivia?" I just nod, not wanting to deal with her shit a second longer. "You're fucking stupid."
"Look who's talking." My leg bounces, nerves skyrocketing more and more with each passing second.
"I don't understand what you see in her." I ignore her, pretending to pay attention to our assignment when the only thing my mind is on is Olivia.
When the bell rings, after I've sent Olivia several more texts asking where she is and if she's okay, I'm standing right up from my seat, shoving everything in my backpack, and going out the door ignoring Lexi who's following me.
"This is your last chance, Adrian." I flip Lexi off as I run to Olivia's locker, seeing if she'll show up. But she's not there as I see Divine and everyone else there.
"Where's Olivia?" Danny asks as she's usually always with me, but now she's not.
"I don't know. You guys haven't seen her?" I'm taking out my phone again, calling her and my worries just keep going when it goes straight to voicemail.
"We've been in class?" Of course they haven't seen her, she should've been in class too.
"Did she ditch school?" Noah asks from beside Danny, looking worried too.
"Maybe... I don't know, fuck." If she ditched school, I think she would have told me or one of us.
"I'm gonna call mom." I nod at Divine, seeing her talk for a few minutes. My worries just go up again when she shakes her head at me, saying she's not with Admira. "Everything's fine mom," she lies.
"You don't think her dad got her back... did he?" Ashton's worrying now too, fidgeting with the ring on his finger as Divine takes his hand.
"I really fucking hope not," I croak out, terrified for if he did.
"Her dad?" Noah doesn't know about Olivia's dad, but with the look of worries on all our faces I'm sure he figures it out.
"Okay, she's not with Admira. Let's just check school to be sure?" For once, Danny's being the mature one, but I can tell with his shaky voice he's just as terrified for if her dad has her.
"Yeah, split up so we check faster." I go by myself, Divine and Ashton going their own way, then Danny and Noah go their own way too. But after fifteen minutes and texts of where we all checked-everywhere-we don't find her.
And I'm running to my fucking car.
"W-We can ask Principal Morgan?" Divine sounds like she's about to go into a panic attack, but as much as I want to stop and help her even as I'm about to go into one also, we've got to go to his house first. We can't waste time, not in this situation.
"Fuck Morgan. If her dad got her from school, she's the one who let him." Ashton makes the biggest point, all us nodding as I speed off, not caring about seat belts or anything.
The second I'm pulled in front of the house, I'm out of the car, with Divine right behind me and I tell Ashton to get in the driver's seat, knowing if she's here, she'll need to go to the hospital. Thankfully, her dad's car isn't in the driveway.
"Olivia?" Divine's yelling, running upstairs when we don't find her in the living room or kitchen. I follow her and Divine's frozen in the bedroom doorway, tears falling and I shove past her, freezing.
Oh fuck.
"No... No. No," I repeat, running to the bed where she's passed out, checking her pulse that's barely faint. "Baby, come on. Wake up." I pick her up as gently as I can, not wanting to cause her any more harm but knowing she needs help now, carrying her bridal style.
Her face is beat and bloody, as it looks like she'd been spitting up blood. Her hairs natted, her clothes disheveled, her cast even has blood on it. With her hoodie and jeans covering the rest of her, god only knows what else has happened.
Getting in the car is a struggle, as I make Danny and Noah sit in the front passenger thankful when they don't complain about the room, terrified with the sight of Olivia. I couldn't give a shit if we got pulled over, the officer would have to understand. Olivia's head rests on my lap, her body in the middle of the backseat, and her legs on Divine as tears fall down her cheeks.
"Stay with me," I whisper over and over as I feel her pulse slow down more and more, becoming even more faint. "You're the strongest person I've ever met, baby. You can do this. Just stay with me, you've got this." I choke back a sob, fucking terrified for my girlfriends life.
The drive to the hospital from where Olivia lived would probably be fifteen minutes, but Ashton made it into five, thankfully not being pulled over as we don't have time to waste.
"Help!" I hear Ashton yelling things to nurses, begging for help, as I carry Olivia in my arms with blood going down my hoodie but I don't care.
There's so much blood.
The second the nurses see Olivia, they're running to take her from me, laying her on a stretcher and going to get help immediately. All five of us rush after them, not caring about the looks we get, worried about our best friend.
"You all need to stay out here," one nurse says to us as she motions to the chairs in the hall, holding the door open for herself as she doesn't allow us to follow and I gape at her. Before I can shove past her anyways, she goes on, "She's going to need a lot of help." No shit Sherlock. "Surgery potentially." Fuck... "I'll come right back out here once I can to tell you anything."
"You fucking better." She shuts the door, leaving me with no way to know what's happening to Olivia or if she's okay or anything when you need a card or some shit I don't have to get past this point.
I turn, tears falling freely as I see my four other shaken up best friends. I'd like to tell them she'll be okay for assurance, but I'm not sure I can even tell myself that. Divine comes to me, sobbing as I hold back on doing the same when I wrap my arms around her. Ashton looks so lost, terrified, as he looks around and I know he's panicking but refusing to show it, coming over and rubbing Divine's back. Noah and Danny sit in the chairs, crying and comforting each other.
Today was supposed to be the best day ever. I'd ask Olivia out, which I did and she said yes. I was going to buy her flowers, chocolates, write her a card, all that shit. We were going to have dinner with my mom tonight. This was not supposed to happen. He was never even supposed to be back. He should be rotting in hell.
"She's going to b-be okay," Divine struggles to tell me, turning to Ashton and hugging him now, desperately needing the comfort. Me and Ashton both look at each other, he just looks scared, terrified. Olivia has quickly become a little sister to Ashton even if they still hardly know each other, that's their dynamic.
He can't lose another little sister.
We all can't lose Olivia.
"She's a strong girl," he finally says. "She's going to be okay."
She better fucking be or that 'dad' of hers is going to have more problems than some prison time.
An hour or two, maybe three, passes and I have no clue what's happened as I've been zoned out, only waiting for a nurse or someone to come tell us what the hell is happening with Olivia. But when I see Admira walking towards us, pulling Divine in for a hug right away, I'm pulled back to reality.
"Mom," Divine sobs, tightening her hold on Admira.
"I know baby," she comforts her while holding her own tears back as I hold back mine once again. "She's going to be okay."
The door to where we weren't allowed to pass opens and all our heads snap to the nurse, the same one who said she'd come back and tell us anything she can. Which anything she can tell better be everything.
"Where are her guardians?" She asks first, facing me, and all our heads snap to Admira who steps forward. Admira's the closest she has to a guardian. But she seems to just sum everything up once she gets to talking, making it seem not that bad when in reality it's fucking terrible. "Her left lung collapsed, she needed a chest tube. Her right cheek bone is fractured. Three ribs are fractured also. She's got a lot of internal bleeding, overall she's lost a lot of blood." There was so much blood. "And she has a moderate concussion. Those are just the big parts we're focusing on."
"Oh my god," Divine wails, hugging her mom again as Admira processes all of that. My anger is so high now, as I want to murder her 'dad.'
"B-But she's going to be okay, right?" Danny asks as we haven't been told if she'll be okay, just her injuries.
"Yes." So much weight is lifted off my shoulders. "You got her here just in time. Just a second later... she would've been gone."
"Thank you." The nurse nods at Admira, looking over all of us.
"How did this happen?" My leg bounces before I stand, just wanting to see her.
"It happened from some piece of shit. Can we see her?" I ask, wanting to just make a run for it and find her room or whatever.
"We're still working on her. And with her injuries... it may be hard to see her like this." I don't give a shit, I just need to be by her side, have her right next to me for proof she'll be okay. "So, for the night, guardian's only."
Admira nods, giving me a sympathetic look as I plop back down in my chair, my leg continuing it's bouncing. The nurse says something about coming back for Admira when they're done as Divine sits back down next to Ashton, his arms wrapping around her as her head's on his chest.
My phone dings and as I thought, it's mom asking where the hell I am, worried of course as me and Olivia should've been there by now. I just sum it up, texting that Olivia's in the hospital, that we clearly won't make it for dinner.
"Why don't you boys call your parents? Or I'll give Divine my keys..." Admira trails off, changing her mind about Divine driving as she's not in a good place to. No one makes a move to call anyone though, not wanting to leave Olivia.
At least until my mom shows up, a look of pure worry covering her face as her blonde hair flows as she runs down the hall the second she sees us.
"What happened?" She worries, looking between me, Danny, and Ashton, not knowing Divine or Noah. She also doesn't know about Olivia's dad at all.
She sighs when none of us answer, not wanting to just spill Olivia's business even when we're going to have to. With how badly she's hurt, there's no way cops or social workers aren't going to question what the hell happened. And after this, her dad doesn't just get to roam free as if he didn't damn near kill his daughter. He should've been thrown in prison a long time ago.
Admira steps in, introducing herself, slightly telling what happened but leaving a lot of it out. Mom sits next to me, wrapping her arms around me as my leg hasn't stopped bouncing and I continuously crack my knuckles.
"She's going to be okay," she tells me, trying her best to comfort me but no amount of comfort will help when my girlfriend was just about beat to death by her own dad.
It's completely silent between us all for a while, nothing being said as we wait for the nurse or anyone, no one making moves to leave.
The door finally opens again, Admira standing up immediately, apologizing to Divine as she was dozing off on her shoulder. Words are exchanged between Admira and the nurse but I can't hear or focus on what's said.
"Guardian's only," the nurse reminds me when I try to follow her and Admira, getting annoyed when the door is shut in my face. Admira isn't even her legal guardian but she's the closest she'll ever have.
I plop back down in my chair, my nerves high, desperate to see Olivia. Mom turns to Danny, Ashton, and Noah, introducing herself to Noah, and saying something about getting them home. I think mom calls Danny's mom, maybe Ashton's, talking lowly to them.
"Danny, your mom's on the way. Noah and Ashton, she said she'd drop you guys home." They nod, but I know they all want to stay. Especially Ashton as he sits next to Divine again, pulling her close.
"Go home, I'll text you everything I can," I tell them, Ashton especially. Danny and Noah nod, but Ashton shakes his head, wanting to stay. I just nod at him, knowing he won't go no matter what I say. And either way, we know they won't let anyone but Admira back for tonight at least-which is stupid.
Time passes quickly, Danny getting a text as he and Noah stand. Danny hugs me and Divine without hesitation, nodding at Ashton when he knows he won't do a hug right now, and Noah hesitates to give me one but does anyways, telling me that Olivia will be okay as he seems to tell himself so too. We've only just met the kid but he's already our best friend.
More time passes and Admira's walking back out as I notice the lady dressed very professionally walking down towards us, Admira seeing her too.
It's a social worker. There's no cop though, not yet.
Admira talks to her, along with the nurse, walking away leaving me, Ashton, Divine, and even mom to not know a single thing that's happening with Olivia. I go to stand, be nosy and find out for myself, but mom catches my hand then shakes her head at me.
"Can I see her?" I ask when they're done talking, the social worker walking away.
"She's..." Admira starts but quickly trails off, worrying me half to death. "She's in really bad shape, Adrian."
"I don't care." I really don't, I just need to see her, be by her side.
"Adrian, lets see about tomorrow?" I ignore mom, pleading the nurse to let me see her even if it's just for a few seconds.
"They can see her." She motions to Ashton and Divine too, knowing they're desperate to see her also.
It's not even a few seconds before they're both jumping out of their seats, following as the nurse walks through the door and keeps it open for us this time, relief washing over me finally. Mom follows too, along with Admira, as they haven't even gotten to properly introduce each other to one another.
The nurse stops us at what I assume is Olivia's room, and I know it's to warn us but I couldn't give a shit, moving past her into the room earning myself a scolding from my mom but again, I don't care.
I stop in my tracks at the doorway, seeing Olivia in the hospital bed, wires everywhere and the beeping noises fill my ears just now.
"Oh my god," I hear Divine whisper and cry, seeing her two. Ashton stands beside me, tense, and I look to find mom holding back her own tears. Admira rubs Divine's back as I finally step into the room, taking one of the chairs to sit beside Olivia's bed.
Her eyes are once again swollen purple and black, but worse this time, making it look like it'll be impossible for her eyes to open when she wakes up. Her right cheek bone is swollen too, a dark purple, as expected when the nurse told us it was fractured. Both sides of her jaw are bruised. Her nose is swollen, crooked-broken too. Her entire face is beat and swollen, but all the blood has been cleaned up. There's marks around her neck again too.
Her hair is tangled as it was earlier and I notice the purple cast on her hand now, replacing her old one. They must have changed it from where her blood had poured on it. She's on oxygen, with a nasal cannula I think I remember it being called. Bruises cover her arms, going over her healed scars. Her legs are covered with the blanket, but I know there's bruises there along with under her gown. She has an IV in her wrist, connecting to bags of liquids but I don't bother to ask when I see the tube protruding from her hospital gown, now knowing it's from her lung having collapsed.
I can't imagine how much pain she's going to be in once she's awake.
"When do you think she'll wake up?" Ashton reads my mind and asks, frowning as he looks down at Olivia.
"Could be tonight, could be tomorrow, could be a few days or more." With that, she walks out of the room, giving us time with her.
