"So, how're things with Olivia going?" Ashton asks as he and Danny play Left For Dead, me checking my phone.
"It hasn't even been really two days since Adrian grew the balls to talk to her," Danny tells Ashton and I throw one of Ashton's pillows at him. "I'm just saying!" He defends himself.
"Yeah sure...but she seemed off today."
"It's been two days and you've already learned her vibes or whatever?" Ashton looks back at me, I shrug.
"Good going, you startled the witch!" Danny yells at Ashton and I laugh as they both die in the game, they both toss the controllers and turn their attention to me. "What makes you think she was off?"
"She slept through all of physics, which whatever I sleep in half of my classes. But, I followed her to her locker because I wanted to talk to her more, but she nearly passed out. I held onto her so she didn't like fall, but she flinched, like she's terrified of touch."
"Or she just doesn't like touch," Danny says.
"Or she doesn't trust you considering it's been two days, you've had like two conversations, what have they even been about if she doesn't talk?" Says Ashton, and I realize they're both right.
But why was she about to pass out?
"First day I only got her name finally, after she told me to go away and clearly didn't want to talk." I realize how annoying I probably am to her now. "Today she didn't really want to talk at all again, and when she didn't want to talk-write I mean-I continued to talk anyways. But she listened the whole time, I even told her I'm going to see dad tomorrow."
"Damn, already trust her enough to talk about him?" Ashton asks, surprised.
"It's just dad, not anything about mom and everything that happened." I shrug.
It goes quiet, mentioning everything that happened makes tension usually, until Danny talks. "I don't get why you didn't just talk to her the moment you noticed her." I roll my eyes. "You noticed her like what, the end of the school year last year?"
"Probably before that," Ashton adds.
"Shut up," I drag the words out. "I was nervous, damn."
"You really do like her?" I groan, wiping my hands over my face.
"What makes you think that, Danny?"
"She's got you nervous, what girl has ever made you nervous?"
"That means nothing."
"Sure. You should've talked to her all those months ago and maybe you'd be passed just knowing her name and acting like a stalker." I realize now how creepy I probably am too now.
"Shut up." I feel so weird actually talking about a girl with them, we've never had conversations like this up until lately. Ashton doesn't date or any of that after his last relationship, and well Danny talks about whoever the new guy is that's his soulmate of the week-that's it. I've never 'crushed' on someone or been in a relationship, so nothing from me. Until Olivia, apparently.
"I also know she has a friend, though I don't know her name, the one who always sits with her at lunch."
"Oh wow you know so much about her!" Danny says sarcastically, making me throw another pillow at him.
"You're a stalker," Ashton says now getting a pillow thrown at him.
Months earlier
"I don't understand why you don't just talk to her," Danny says, knocking me out of my trance. I look away from the girl I've yet to figure out the name of who's sitting across the cafeteria.
"Don't start, Danny." She looks so sad, until the same girl who sits with her everyday sits down beside her, she smiles but I can't tell if it's a real smile.
"No, he has a point." I glare at Ashton, the one who's supposed to have my side on everything but here we are.
"Who are you guys talking about?" Lexi chimes in as if it's any of her business.
"Adrian here has a little crush but won't talk to her," Danny's big ass mouth tells.
"Who?" I look at her, weirded out on why she seems to want to know so bad.
"It's not even a crush, she's just...I don't know, I'm just curious about her."
"Yeah sure, you guys literally have a class together, go talk to her and figure out why you're curious about her."
"I'm still confused on what girl we're talking about," Lexi says, more of her unwanted words making it into our conversation.
"Why do you care?" She seems slightly offended when I ask that.
"I'm not allowed to wonder who my best friend has a crush on?" We're not bestfriends.
"No."
"Well that's rude." She touches my arm, her acrylics hitting the skin my sleeve doesn't cover. I wish her boyfriend was here right now, she wouldn't be like this then. She enjoys being all over me when he's not around, it makes me uncomfortable. But he even knows but he seems to not care. They're fucking weird.
"It's the girl over there, Adrian doesn't know her name, yet." Danny points subtly at her and I regret him telling her after.
"That mute...I just don't even know what to call her, bitch?" I push her hands off me.
"Mute bitch?" I ask, Ashton and Danny roll their eyes at Lexi.
"Yeah, she can talk but she doesn't, she's an attention seeker."
"She's an attention seeker for not talking...you literally make no sense Lexi." I knew the girl didn't talk, never once have I heard her talk in class and when she's called on, she doesn't answer. Her and the girl that always sits with her also pass a notebook back and forth, girl writes, her friend reads and talks more.
"Sure, she's-"
"Just stop talking, Lexi." She seems offended, but really I don't care.
Lexi has always been one to talk down on people, it's fucking annoying and I don't like her for it. I know, stop talking to her. I've tried but she always manages to make her way back here, even when we show no interest and Ashton does not care, he tells her to leave but she doesn't.
"Don't you have other 'friends' to annoy instead of us?" See what I mean when I said Ashton doesn't care?
Present time again
"Talk to her, stop being nervous." Danny tries convincing me.
"I already have talked to her, I don't want to annoy her more." Though I don't care if I annoy her, I want to know her and for her to know me but of course the second she tells me to leave her alone I will.
She practically already has told you to leave her alone.
Fuck.
"Do it."
"Fuck you."
"I'm good, you're not my type." Ashton chokes on his french fries as I just shake my head.
"I don't even see her." I look around the cafeteria, she's nowhere to be found. She always sits at the same table at lunch but not today, I haven't seen her at all today either so it makes me worry after yesterday.
"Then find her?" I flip Ashton off, but get up anyway.
I walk over to the table that Olivia and her friend sit at. Her friend is there, but Olivia's not. She looks up at me giving a look, I can't tell what she means by it.
"Is Olivia not at school today?" I ask her and she looks around, for some reason.
She pushes her long and braided hair away before answering. "No, why?"
"Is she okay?"
"What do you want with her?" My eyebrows furrow, she makes it sound like I was just wanting to use her or something when that's not it at all.
"Nothing? I just wanted to..." How do I explain? I've never gotten nervous like this over a girl, especially one I barely even know.
"What? Wanted to use her and be an asshole like all of you."
"All of you? What? I'm not using her, I can promise that. Who's used her?" Whoever has used her somehow, I have the sudden urge to give them a bloody face.
"People have talked to her and gotten close to her, at least they thought they were close, only to try and force her to talk but then hurt her when she won't because assholes around here don't understand that she can't just talk and they don't respect boundaries."
The way she talks about Olivia like this, I know she is a real friend, and I'm happy Olivia has her because she's the only person I see her hang out with. Stalker. Whoever all of these people are who have done this to Olivia, I want to hurt now and now may sound dumb since I barely know her but I don't care, no one deserves that anyway.
"I can promise you I won't do that to Olivia." She looks at me, skeptical of my intentions still.
"Then why out of nowhere are you talking to her?"
"She seems sweet, pretty great, just wanted to know her." I shrug when really it's, i've noticed her for months but have been too scared to talk to her and she makes me nervous it seems so I must know her now as long as she feels comfortable enough to let me know her. She also seemed sweet besides the 'attitude' she's given me but now I understand why.
"You hurt her in any way, I will hurt you somehow whether it be emotionally or physically, understand?" She seems so sweet with the way she is with Olivia from what I've seen, but mess with Olivia she completely changes which I enjoy, happy that someone is protecting her.
"I understand, still, I can promise you I won't hurt her ever." She nods finally. "Now, is she okay?"
"Yeah, she's just sick, she told me."
"Was she fine after yesterday, when she almost passed out?"
"Yeah, guess she was just starting to get sick yesterday."
"What's your name?" Now she really gives me a look.
"Have you ever been told you ask too many questions?"
"Yes."
"Figures, you should limit your questions, please."
"Yeah, what's your name?"
"Divine." Her name is what she seems until you start talking about her friend.
I walk back over to our table after, Danny and Ashton immediately turn their attention to me to hear what was said.
"She's sick so she's not at school, her friend barely trusts me and threatened me if I hurt her, and the friend's name is Divine but I don't believe that's what she is because she's different when talking," I say in one breath.
