Three years had passed since Sierra Jameson closed the door on her past and chose a different path. Three years since she'd walked away from the ashes of betrayal and found refuge in Julian Westwood's steady presence.
Those years had been a healing balm. Julian had been everything Landon never was—present, honest, devoted. They'd built a quiet life together, filled with shared meals, long conversations, and the kind of gentle affection Sierra had never known she craved.
Not only had Julian supported her emotionally, but he'd also encouraged her professional ambitions. With his backing, Sierra had worked her way up at a respected law firm—a far cry from the broken woman who'd emerged from prison years ago. She'd never once considered reaching out to London's father for help, never wanted to rely on connections that tied her to that painful past. This success was hers alone, built on her own merit and determination.
"You're working late again," Julian said, appearing in the doorway of their apartment with two cups of coffee. He set one down beside her laptop, his hand briefly touching her shoulder.
Sierra looked up from the case files scattered across their dining table, offering him a tired smile. "Thanks. This case is keeping everyone at the firm up all night."
"Your boss better be paying you overtime for this," Julian said, settling into the chair across from her. "You've been at this for twelve hours straight."
"He is. And I don't mind—I love what I do now." Sierra reached for her coffee, savoring the warmth. "Remember when I thought I'd never work again? When I was convinced no one would hire an ex-con?"
Julian's expression shifted slightly, something flickering in his eyes that Sierra had learned to recognize but could never quite name. "You were never defined by that, Sierra. You're brilliant—any firm would be lucky to have you."
There it was again. That look. As if he were seeing someone else when he looked at her.
Sierra had convinced herself she was completely happy with Julian. Almost.
"Julian," she said softly, setting down her coffee. "Can I ask you something?"
"Of course."
"Sometimes when you look at me..." She hesitated, unsure how to voice the feeling that had been nagging at her for months. "It's like you're searching for someone else. Like I'm not quite who you expect me to be."
Julian's hand tightened around his coffee mug. "What do you mean?"
"I don't know. It's probably nothing. Maybe I'm just—"
Her phone rang, cutting through the moment. Julian's eyes immediately darted to the screen, and Sierra caught the flash of recognition—and panic—that crossed his face before he could hide it.
"Aren't you going to answer that?" he asked, his voice carefully neutral.
Sierra glanced at the unknown number, then at Julian's tense expression. Something cold settled in her stomach.
"Who do you think it is, Julian?"
The question hung in the air between them, heavy with implications neither of them was ready to address.
Until today.
