Boredom could strike anyone even the demi-god creature. Disguised as a tall sell-sword, Sanguine sank himself on the chair at Bannered Mare. The inn had always been his favorite until today. He no longer enjoyed the tune from the bards, nor the mead poured in his tankard. Perhaps lingering in the same place for weeks was the reason.
"I was told by Ysolda that you might know something odd happening in Dragonsreach." He heard a familiar voice. Instantly Sanguine turned his head to check if that sharp First Dragonborn was nearby. When he did not see him, Sanguine gazed back at the voice owner who was talking with the innkeeper.
"Rumour said the Jarl's children have been acting strange. Are you to investigate that?"
The woman shrugged. "Maybe. In fact, Irrileth expects me to keep the Jarl safe too."
Sanguine sighed internally. The woman before him now had been all about work and responsibilities.
"Speaking of threat and danger." He popped into their conversation. "I am sure I can be of use to keep you away from such thing." Sanguine did not know when he began taking interest in her. He once failed to seduce her but perhaps he could give it another try.
She looked at him in the eye and smiled. "Well thank you, sir. But I can protect myself." Ammra rejected politely but Sanguine found her gullibility even more attractive. He was right in front of her but she didn't even have the slightest idea of his true self.
"What a shame. I was about to give you half price. And I am capable of anything."
Ammra chuckled. "Anything?"
He felt he was being tested, Sanguine crossed his arms and smirked. "Anything."
"Still, I won't hire you." She muttered then turned to the innkeeper and handed her a bag of gold. The innkeeper handed her a basket of red apples.
"Thank you, dear. Do you need anything else?" Ammra just shook her head. Little did she knew her way of doing that just made her so adorable in his eyes.
"Thanks for your information. I might pay the Jarl a visit later." She told her the turned to Sanguine. "See ya."
Boredom immediately torturing the Daedric Prince again as soon as she left. By the Nines! He was Sanguine; he could bring any women to their knees and fell for him. But why he couldn't even get the slightest of Ammra's attention? He sighed heavily then stepped out of the inn, being determined to do anything so she would notice him.
Sanguine could easily found her by using his daedric sense. Apparently, Ammra was still nearby. Led by his instinct, Sanguine made his way from Bannered Mane to the Gildengreen tree in the middle of Whiterun.
He watched her from afar as the woman looked up to admire the beauty of the sacred tree. When Sanguine walked closer and stopped next to her, Ammra slowly turned to him. Her gaze was deep and enigmatic. There was silence for some moment until finally, she broke in.
"It's you again."
"Yes. It's me." He replied. "Think about my offer. You will not regret hiring me."
Ammra chuckled. "Why do you insist on asking me to hire you?" he did not answer and just enjoyed her everything. "I don't plan on fighting in the next few days."
"When I said I could do anything, that also means I can do other things than just fighting." At this rate, nothing would break his determination.
"Now that you said that...I want to hire you. But you might not like what I will assign you." She paused. "I doubted you can pull it off."
"You have been underestimating me twice, little girl. Why don't you try me then?" his pride and urge to prove himself drove Sanguine to convince her.
"Fine. Meet me tomorrow here before noon. We'll see if you can do it."
"I never take back my words." He firmly added.
That time Sanguine saw her charming innocent smile. "Good day, and see ya."
*** The next day***
Sanguine approached as soon as Ammra arrived at the same place.
"Last confirmation," she muttered. "Are you sure you can do this?"
"Hmph!" he smirked. "Tell me what we will do today."
"Kill some pests, clean away some dirt, and taking care of some people."
"Let's get this over with. I am yours for the day." He told her but Ammra just gave her charmingly enigmatic smile again.
Sanguine thought he would have everything under control. What pest would match his battle skill? Cleaning some dirt and taking care of someone was just mere child play. With a swing of his blade, he would finish the job fast and could use the remaining time to make his move on her.
However, as he followed Ammra toward a building, Sanguine found himself inside an orphanage. He gaped as soon as they entered the hall and welcomed by the cheer of the children.
"They lost their parents because of war. The Jarl knew I often do this and decided to support me. Now the orphanage has better financial support from the Jarl himself."
Sanguine did not comment a single word. This was totally unexpected.
As for the tasks, Ammra assigned Sanguine to help children tending the garden where they grow some food. Sanguine must kill some bugs, caterpillars, and rats that harmed the crops—literally killing the pests. He wanted to just wave his hand and used his magic to wipe out that place.
Ammra chuckled. "Are you sure you can still do this?" she teased.
His pride forced him to cope with the situation.
Meanwhile, the children became troublesome; two children screamed when they saw worms then latch onto each of Sanguine's legs, two kids fighting on how to dig the land, while on the other side of the garden younger kids busy eating dirt.
When he heard the fighting children started to cry, he gritted his teeth to hold his temper.
"I'll handle here. Please take care of the brawler." Ammra chuckled. She gently convinced the kids to let Sanguine go. Their eyes met for some moment.
Before he could speak, Ammra gestured to him to handle the crying kids. Sanguine kept his cool then walked toward them. He lifted both children effortlessly so they would stop fighting. Honestly, he wanted to transform them into goats.
"What should I do to them?" he asked.
"Teach them how to dig the land and plant the cabbage seedling." Ammra gave instruction without looking back. She was teaching other kids how to harvest the leeks and carrots.
Sanguine sighed and do the most unfamiliar thing in his entire life as a Daedric Prince: planting crops. The two boys—who were already calm—copied everything he did. They frowned when seeing how awkwardly he held the garden spade. But screw it! He existed for debauchery, not gardening!
After the gardening was done, came the wash time. Ammra used to help the kids wash their bodies in a large bathtub. Of course, this time Sanguine would help too. In the male bathroom, the kids were running away naked while playing with the foam.
"Get back here you little rascals!" he growled as he grabbed them.
"Mister, forgive me. I will be a good child form now..." his words were interrupted as Sanguine plunged him into the big bathtub like throwing a stone. Some of the children cried by his barbaric way of bathing. Some of them screamed.
"Is everything alright right there?" Ammra asked from the next room.
"Yeah." Sanguine replied then dipped the next children into the bathtub as if dipping a teabag.
After all of the children were clean—and mildly traumatized—then came the time to bathe the baby. The orphanage had an infant dweller since last week after his parents passed due to sickness.
"I will prepare the bath. Please hold him," she told Sanguine.
He was so reluctant when accepting the baby. While Ammra was not looking, Sanguine intently observe the mortal baby who was sleeping. The longer he stared, the more questions he had in his mind; why is it so small? Why doesn't it die with such a fragile body?
He heard her low chuckled. "It seems you like the baby."
"It is so...weak."
"All babies are fragile," Ammra replied while taking the baby from him.
Sanguine followed her and quietly watched as Ammra gently bathing the baby. When his gaze fell at Ammra, he became even envious of Miraak. He really wished he could replace that man even just for a day. Seeing the way she took care of the baby, Sanguine could almost feel how her touch feel when she bathed him. But alas, it would never happen.
Mealtime came next after wash.
Sanguine never thought he would ever become chef assistance. Ammra cooked with other caretakers while Sanguine helped her in any small things like; chopping the leek, dicing the carrot, or cutting the vegetable.
"This is a kitchen, not a battlefield. Your way of handling kitchen knife is too stiff." Ammra chuckled. "Cut this half." She gave him a big pumpkin. "Then diced it." When she saw he frowned, Ammra adding, "Well, I want you to do it since we thought we could use those big muscles of yours."
With that ego boost, Sanguine smirked then accepted the task. Eventually, after some small disasters caused by his lack of experience in the kitchen—Sanguine overcooked the soup and turned it into cinder—he enjoyed the things he did before he knew it. He no longer objected when Ammra told him to help the caretakers to serve the stew for the children.
After mealtime, the next agenda—the last one—was to take the children out for a field trip. This time Sanguine is assigned to escort them to the meadow outside the city's wall. Ammra would not join them because she would continue some other tasks in the orphanage.
This was an easy job for him. As soon as they arrived at the field, he let the children play around as he watched from afar. It less different than herding some cattle, only the cattle were some two-legged curious creatures. Few hours passed by and it's time to go home.
"Alright, kids, time to get back." He told them. "Gather around. We will go home."
"Mister would you carry this for me?" one kid asked as he handed him a basket of flowers.
He frowned but agreed. "Fine. Let's go."
The sun was almost setting when they entered the city. However, when they returned, Ammra immediately noticed one child was missing.
"Didn't you count them?" Ammra asked.
When he saw her worried face and anxious tone, Sanguine immediately felt bad. "Wait here and I will find him."
Sanguine teleported to the meadow when no one was looking. This time he used his power to relocate the child and found him sitting alone by the pond.
"What are you doing here?" he asked sternly, but careful enough not to reveal himself.
"The fish. It is alone now because I accidentally hit his papa with a stone." He said innocently. "Now he is alone like me. I don't want the fish to feel alone because it feels bad. I'll stay here."
Sanguine sighed and looked at the pond. He heard the child sniffed and cried. Now he felt sorry for him. He then secretly used his power to heal the injured big fish.
"He was just sleeping. Look." He told the kid.
When the kid saw the big fish swam again, his face brightened. He smiled. "You are right! The fish will not be alone anymore." Sanguine smirked seeing his joy.
"Let's go home." The kid nodded and innocently hold his hand.
As strange as it seemed, they went home holding hands and Sanguine was amused by the purity these children showed.
When evening fell and the children went to bed, his contract for the day almost ended. He walked around the orphanage and saw Ammra was setting a table in the backyard.
"Take a seat." She told him.
He watched how she lit the candles and serve the dinner for both of them. Ammra even gently poured him a glass of Alto wine then gestured him to take a sip. She sat across the table then smiled. The candlelight dinner under the starry sky was something he never expected and his vulgar instinct was actually expecting this would lead to bed.
"How was your day?" she asked while politely serving him a salmon steak.
"Like I said. Nothing I can't do. You won't regret hiring me." Even if he did not need mortal food, he just took a bite because it was served by Ammra.
Ammra chuckled. "Honestly, I did not expect you'll make it this far, Sanguine."
He instantly coughed then glared at her. Across the table, Ammra just charmingly smiled. "How did you know?" he asked in a disbelief tone.
"When I was near the Gildengreen tree, I was one with the resonance of Kynareth's power. It enabled me to sense your true self."
"So, you knew everything from the beginning?" She chuckled and nodded. Sanguine narrowed his eyes, feeling tricked. "Why?"
"Why 'why'? At least you were not bored, were you?" she raised one brow. "And I want to give you a lesson after what you did to me and disguising as Serana." Ammra winked mischievously.
Sanguine was at a loss of words. So, all this time Ammra was watching him while knowing his true self. He was tricked in his own game. Ammra poured another glass of wine for him. He stared at her and she shrugged with a victorious smile. She was indeed dangerous. Yet it only made him wanted her more.
At this rate, there was no point in hiding his true form, so Sanguine revealed himself. Ammra stood and walked to him. "Here, from the children." She placed a flower wreath on his head. "They picked the flowers and asked me to give it to you. They liked you." She smiled.
"Well, thanks?"
Ammra chuckled. "And this is from me, for the Daedric Prince of Rose." She placed a red rose on the table before him.
If he could, Sanguine would have blushed by now. He had created many roses to woe a lot of women. But Ammra was the first one to give him a rose. By the Nines! Had he fell for her?! Sanguine accepted the rose.
"Here's your pay." She placed a pouch of gold coin. "Good night."
Ammra turned to her heels then left. But before she could go further, Sanguine teleported and appeared right before her. Ammra couldn't evade when he leaned in then kissed her on the forehead.
"Thank you, beautiful one." Sanguine placed the coin pouch on her head then disappeared.
He returned to his realm and gave the rose the small part of his Daedric Power. The flower turned eternal. With only a single touch of its stem on the ground, immediately every corner of his realm was blooming with rose bushes.
Sanguine wouldn't forget the moment he had spent with Ammra and the children.
