"That was a warning for you Ammra. You'd better watch your back and act fast. He might regain his power already." She scolded herself while walking down the city entrance toward her house—Breezehome.
Ammra knew Miraak was not joking about backstabbing her, but he did not do that when they were attacked at Windhelm. He had the chance. He had the blade. "Then why didn't he do that? Perhaps he still not aware that he did not need me to regain his power? Yes! That was why he spared me. Geez...Ammra, you'd batter take advantage of this." her mind scolded again.
"Mama, you're back!" a cheerful voice greeted her when she opened the door. "I have something for you." Ammra smiled and hug the child.
Miraak was surprised to know Ammra had a daughter. He did not expect her to have married. She looked too young to marry in fact. Suddenly a burst of strange annoyance filled his chest. He felt his jaw tightened and an unexplainable subtle but boiling rage flew beneath his skin.
"What is it, Sofie?" Ammra asked while kneeling to her level. The child gave a piece of dessert and let Ammra bite it from her hand. She brushed Sofie's hair with her hand gently. "Thanks, sweetie," Ammra said. "Where is Lydia? I need to see her."
"Welcome back, my thane." Lydia greeted as she walked down the staircase.
"Hi, Lyda. It's good to see you. I need your help. I'll go to Solitude. Would you please help to prepare?"
"No problem, my thane." She replied. "Are you traveling alone or this stranger will join you too?" she asked and Ammra just remembered she had Miraak behind her.
"I will go with him."
"Papa? Will he be my papa?" Sofie chortled with a happy voice. All of them were stunned by the sudden question. Ammra snorted to hold her laughter.
"Sofie..." Lydia said. "Go play outside. Your mother is tired." The child let out a disappointed aww then walked out.
"Wait here Miraak, I will be right back." She climbed the stair and walked to her room. "By the way, Lydia, meet Miraak, Miraak, meet Lydia." Her voice was heard from above.
Miraak gave a cold gaze to her who also stared at him sternly. A moment ago she looked quite calm but now she seemed to ready swing her sword. "You can ignore what the child just said. My thane had never had a man visited the house." He strangely felt a slight relief hearing those words. "My thane adopted her. She is kind and that is why someone like you will never have a chance to ask for her hand. Especially after some cultists that you sent to murder her."
He just smirked. "Don't worry. I am not even interested in her."
"Guys, please don't fight inside my house," Ammra said casually as she walked down the stair. "Let's go Miraak!" Lydia glared at him as they left.
As the two walked down the city road, the guards who happened to be passing regarded Ammra with respect. Words like: 'Greetings, my thane', 'Stay safe, my thane', 'Hail Alduin slayer,' etc rang. Ammra simply replied with a smile or nod. Some other citizens who were her friends waving their hands from distance and smiled when they saw her.
Miraak heard her grunted in annoyance while obviously turning in the corner of the street to choose an emptier road. "So many people." she sighed. "Anyway, please don't mind what Sofie said earlier. Don't get offended. The kid didn't know what she said." Ammra said without looking back. Miraak caught her acting more relaxed compared with when she walked the street with more people.
"I did not expect you have an adopted child," he replied.
"I found her in Windhelm selling flowers for a living. Well, you know how cold the place is--literally and figuratively. She was homeless. She slept on the street in such a cold place. Her parents were dead because of this ridiculous civil war. I got some houses so yeah...I don't see the pain in sharing."
"I speak one sentence and you replied with a whole book."
"I speak normally and you replied with an insult." She sneered. He was surprised to find himself faintly smirked in amusement by her reaction. "Anyway, we are going to see a man named Kodlak. He knows my project and I am curious how he will judge you. He is..." her excited voice suddenly halted.
Ammra stopped at her track. Her normal calm face turned dark seeing the crowd before them. Some dead bodies lying around Jorrvaskr's front yard. Instantly Ammra ran forward and pushed the door opened only to find more mess; blood and traces of fierce battle in every corner.
Miraak saw an old man lying on the floor. Dead. He turned to a Nord man who came approaching and called Ammra.
"Vilkas, what happened?" she asked
"Silverhand finally had their gut to attack us. The old man..."
Ammra hurriedly kneeled and land her head on his chest to check his heartbeat. Her countenance turned darker. Miraak saw her shed no tear but her hands trembling and her face was emotionless. This time an unfamiliar struck of great sorrow and loss hit him.
"Dov...Hah...Jud" the ancient dragon tongue echoed in his head then disappeared. He was sure it was not Hermaeus Mora. His attention was drawn to her again as she kissed the man's forehead.
"Kodlak...if only I came faster..." she sighed.
"The trail was fresh. Had I came directly to Jorrvaskr instead of visiting my house first, it wouldn't have ended like this" she wailed internally."No Ammra...you cannot let this feeling engulf you..." her beast blood rapidly boiling. She wanted to explode. But not now...not before her comrades...not before her enemy—Miraak.
"You come with us, Ammra. We will avenge Kodlak." Vilkas said.
"Dead to the Silverhand!" Farkas responded. "They took fragments of Wuthraad as well."
For Miraak, this sight of sorrow, hatred, and death was good entertainment. He enjoyed it because he had been causing it to many people for many many years. He turned to Ammra, feeling curious on how she would do her revenge. He knew she planned to talk to the man about her plan and Miraak was sure she would show her merciless side again for revenge.
"Vilkas, Farkas, wait." She exclaimed. "We can't lose our head. They might set another trap. Please calm down." Her voice was trembling but she managed to make it sound normal.
"Let's go brother." Farkas said the they left the hall, ignoring her.
Miraak could hear Ammra cursing under her breath before running after them. For a moment he felt forgotten. It was a peculiar and unpleasant feeling but he ignored it before going after Ammra. He must prevent her from getting killed because she was the key to regain his power.
After hours of nonstop running toward nearby Silverhand's hideout, Ammra stopped on the top of the hill. Miraak stood next to her. The hideout was a ruin situated on the foot of a hill. The twins attacked them right from the entrance but Ammra chose to attack from above the hill. She hurriedly conjured two wolves familiar which immediately ran to help the twins.
Miraak who was there only to witness, began to notice whatever she was doing. After conjuring familiars, Ammra conjured magical bow and arrow. She looked awfully worried and resented the situation.
"Damn! Why do they have to attack during the full moon!" she finally let out her anger.
"What's with the full moon?" Miraak still had her head cool for he enjoyed the show. Ammra ignored him and began pulling an arrow then shoot. She looked totally different when she was in combat. Her usual harmless and calm face completely disappeared. It was normal that someone looked ferocious during battle, but Ammra being emotionless was something more dreadful. Miraak just stood still, watching her in silence as she tried to cover those twins who fought head-to-head with enemies down the hill. They were clearly outnumbered but they seemed to enjoy the bloodbath.
"Stay behind me! And don't get too close to those twins." She ordered but Miraak did not expect she said that. "Let's go!" she run on the back of the hill while the twins enter the headquarter.
For him who hadn't found out her werewolf secret, it was strange that Ammra chose to run deep into the forest toward the other side of the hill. Ammra on the other hand knew exactly the leader of the enemy not far from them. He attempted to escape. The lines of trees did not get her lost for her sense was sharp to detect the enemies' location.
It took Miraak some effort to keep his pace. Ammra became somewhat very fast. This reminded him of how their battle was when her speed enabled her to defeat him. Suddenly Ammra stopped on the higher ground with her bow drawn and an arrow ready.
"Give me the fragments!" Ammra demanded. "Leave it there and run for your life!" Miraak was surprised to know Ammra could find the enemies. He began to question why it was possible.
"You again!" one of the men shouted. "You are a disgrace of nature. Beast! Ysgramor can sense your shame! Dog!" he said with a tone full of hatred.
"The more you talk, the less time you have to run away. You should fear the twin, not me!"
All of in sudden, two werewolves jumped out of the bush. Both Ammra and Miraak saw how the beasts tear those men easily as if they were made of paper. Their body was stained with blood, even their fang. Miraak was stunned, feeling entertained yet the thrill also brought down a chill of terror down to his spine. He readied himself, thinking they need to fight those werewolves.
One beast left the area and run toward them but Ammra seemed to not care. Her eyes were fixated on another bigger beast who was still tearing apart the dead bodies. Miraak saw another beast coming but then as it approached, it turned into one of the twins.
"There he goes again." He said, catching his breath. "Leave the place Ammra, I will try to stop him. He is uncontrollable now."
"And what? You will let him rip you apart too, so a deeper regret can consume him?" Ammra said. "Enough with this nonsense! You stay here and protect this guy from Vilkas." She ordered Farkas.
Miraak saw Farkas gazed at him for a moment then he turned to Ammra. "I can take him fast. But what about you sister?"
"Don't worry. I will be fine." She forced a smile.
Miraak grabbed her wrist when he learned Ammra was about to walk down their place toward the beast. "What are you trying to do? Trying to get yourself killed?" he was surprised he could say those words. There was a sudden unfamiliar urge to stop her from danger.
"It is fine, Miraak." she said. "You'll lose nothing if I die." She said calmly and let go herself.
Slowly Ammra approached Vilkas who was howling. As he saw her coming, he bristled. Carefully Ammra raised her hands. "Vilkas...it's me Ammra. I know you're there." He snarled.
Miraak could sense his twin readied himself too in case the beast charged toward her. Miraak observed how Ammra carefully tried to tame the beast. Compared to her small body, the beast was so big and menacing.
"Vilkas...please...it is okay...everything is fine..e..." she said softly, almost pleading. "You are sad...I know...you are angry...it is okay to be angry..e, let me help." The beast stopped snarling but both of them walked in a circle.
The beast started to shook his head. "There you go...good boy..." she said, forcing a calm yet cheerful tone. "It is fine to be angry...just remember you can choose to heal...ignore the pain Vilkas..e..." this time her voice is alluring.
"I can't believe she did it again," Farkas said in disbelief.
"Is your twin often run rampant like that?" Farkas shook his head. "Then why he is like that now?"
"Full moon. He is the alpha, strongest of all. Once in a while, when emotions took him so badly, he could be like this." He explained then smirked. "Funny isn't it? She is so tiny but she managed to tame him."
Miraak turned to Ammra who now had the beast kneeled before her, making his head on her body level. Ammra carefully rubbing and caressing her hands on the beast's head. "It is okay Vilkas...I am here. I know you can control this...easy there..." Just like how he saw her in his dream, Miraak could see how much care and comfort she gave to the beast. Until Ammra rest her forehead on the were wolf's head, the beast slowly turned into human.
"I guess only another alpha can tame my brother." He sighed and Miraak turned to him.
"What did you just say? Another alpha?"
"Yes. Ammra can shift too." For the first time, the powerful first Dragonborn gulped out of shock. All this time he'd been traveling with a werewolf. It explained her speed in their battle. "You don't know?" Farkas asked while turning his head to Miraak but he ignored him. Seeing the situation turned calm, Farkas back to his usual friendly side. "Who are you by the way? Why are you with her?"
"I am Miraak." He said with his eyes still fixated on Ammra. His chest strangely felt heavy as he saw how she tried to comfort Vilkas.
"You are the one who sent cultists to kill her," Farkas said in disbelief then chuckled. "It is so her to be so forgiving. Harm her again, I'll tear you apart like those people."
Miraak ignored his threat while watching Ammra and Vilkas. He was hugging her while she gently caressing his hair with one hand and rubbing his back with another. "I know you can control it." She said softly. "Now...shall we return to Jorrvaskr? They might be done with the burial ceremony."
"I want to stay like this for a while, Ammra."
"I see..." she hugged him back.
At that moment, that unfamiliar anger burst again. The battle was entertaining enough to watch but why was he so upset? He glared at Vilkas who was closing his eyes, resting his chin on her head.
