Once again, the younger Dragonborn let emotion caught her. She spent her entire night in the library, weeping in silence. She knew she must be looked miserable before her nemesis, but Ammra had no other option to heal herself. She cried until no more tear was left. Then she took the sleeping potion and slept on the floor.
"he regained his magic...let's see if I am still alive after this nap..."
Meanwhile, the elder Dragoborn could not bring himself to sleep. He noticed her soft weeping and stayed up, not knowing why. He did not know either why he walked toward the sleeping Ammra then covered her in a blanket. After he saw her in the peaceful sleep, only then could he rest.
"Good morning. Sleeping well, princess?" Ammra greeted him as he walked out of the room. At the same time, Miraak saw her eyes a bit swollen from crying. "Have a seat. Breakfast is ready." Miraak remained silent and complied. He still studied how she acted bright and friendly after being so devastated last night. "I slept quite enough and I believe I did not catch a cold because of the warm blanket." She told him. "I should thank the mysterious person who did that for me."
He held his breath then turned away, feeling a flush of heat inside his body. He knew he shouldn't do what he did. He should have known better she might bring it up the next day. And to his surprise, he just noticed he did not even think of killing her at all in the previous night.
"Our today's menu is garlic bread as an appetizer." Ammra served it on the table with a manner of a prideful servant. "For the main course, we have..."
"Can you just cut the crap?!" Miraak yelled. Ammra noticed his annoyed face but somehow, she was not totally alarmed. Instead, she chuckled. Other than Kodlak or Paarthurnax, she never really talked about what she felt, not even Lydia. Last night's conversation with Miraak was something of an unexplainable coincidence. Perhaps Ammra was just glad she had someone she could talk to.
"Come on...let me pretend you are having breakfast in a luxurious place. You won't find this in Apocrypha. "Miraak just grunted. Ammra cleared her throat and continued her acting. "For the main course, we have ash yam beef stew." She served it for him. "Have your finest Sujamma too." Then she put another meal. "And I baked a lavender dumpling as dessert. Please enjoy, a proper meal for the First Dragonborn." She bowed and Miraak just gave him an unamused look even though he mustered all his might to hold back his urge to laugh. He started to believe something was wrong with her head.
He remembered what Ammra said last night. "I thought this was for the old man."
"By cooking and let someone eat it happily, I have a sense that I honor my promise to Kodlak." She replied. "Besides," she muttered and shyly added, "I want to thank you for last night." She turned away and continued her little cleaning of the kitchen. Miraak smirked seeing her reaction. And he saw her again with that cooking apron. "Please have your breakfast while I prepare the bath." Miraak grabbed her wrist before she left. "Is something wrong?"
"Have breakfast with me." He said in a deep voice then witnessed how her expression turned to surprised. Clearly, she did not expect it.
"I...um...well..." she stuttered. "Th—thanks."
Except with Lydia and Sofie, Ammra had never had a meal at one table with someone else other than herself. She felt awkward and tried to hide her nervousness, but Miraak noticed how she turned quiet. Her hands were shaky. He was amused to see her feeling nervous in her own house.
They had a normal quiet breakfast. It was a peaceful moment until suddenly the house shook. Something big just landed on the top of it followed by a roar. Miraak and Ammra looked at each other because they both knew what menacing creature that let out such roar: a dragon.
Ammra shook her head slowly. Miraak gave a questioning look. Then she whispered, "Ignore it...let's just eat."
Miraak smirked to see how she acted as if everything was fine even though the dragon caused a stir outside of the house. He also noticed her blatant internal screaming of panic while sipping her tea, biting her bread, or taking a spoonful of the meal. Her struggle to remain calm was entertaining.
Being ignored, the beast finally left after a while. Eventually, both Dragonborns continued their peaceful breakfast. At that time the younger Dragonborn started to wonder. After the night before, she came to think Miraak was slightly harmless. She then remembered what she saw through his mask and thought perhaps the man before her could be something else.
"Come to think of it." Ammra started. "I haven't really asked why you tried to kill me."
He gazed at her for a moment. Not only he could not stand the fact that there was another Dragonborn, but Ammra's soul was necessary for the completion of his masterplan to free himself from Apocrypha and Hermaeus Mora.
He had been trying to make his way out without invoking the Deadric Prince's suspicion. But Hermaeus Mora's grasp was impossible to escape from unless he found a replacement as a decoy. Thus, he began the mass mind-controlling. Building a temple and absorbing magic from the Sacred Stones around Solstheim would grant him more power to create a portal out of oblivion while searching for a replacement.
Hermaeus Mora was cunning, so Miraak knew he couldn't just pick any soul. Until one day, he heard the Greybeard summoning another Dovahkiin. That was when he thought the chance finally came. He sent his cultist even though knowing they would meet their death. His real intention was to lure another Dovahkiin into his trap.
"Miraak?" she inquired again because he was silent for too long. "Why did you want to kill me?" their eyes met.
"Isn't it obvious?" he replied coldly. "You're false Dragonborn. There could be only one." Miraak did not find the point in explaining more. With Hermaeus Mora still trying to take him back, Miraak was certain The Daedric Prince hadn't figured out the plan.
"Do you really love being a Dragonborn?" he remained silent "I feel being Dragonborn is such a drag. They have you do something that you don't really like."
"What could it be?"
"Well, they want me to save the world by slaying Alduin but the funny thing is, they wage civil war amongst themselves. What good could it be saving such a violent society." She paused but Miraak liked her way of thinking. His intention was total domination of the whole Tamriel and if those mortals bowed before him, there was no need for the current civil war. "They keep telling me that it is my destiny to kill Alduin and have me do most stuff that involved bloodshed."
"I cannot relate to what you feel." He said plainly. "If I am to be the only Dragonborn, those pathetic mortals shall bow before me. I won't suffer like you."
Ammra snorted and rolled her eyes. "But even so, I still find your reason to kill me is quite irrelevant." He glared at her and Ammra just shrugged. "I beat you. It means I am not false. But you still want to kill me, that could only mean one thing. You have another reason why you need me dead."
"Keep guessing then. You might figure it out before I kill you."
He did not expect her to giggle in response. "I get that you are still intending to kill me. But can you tell me why didn't you do it last night?" she smiled in mischief. "What are you waiting for?"
There was a rush of heat inside his body, triggered by her smile. Not rage. Not hatred. but something more taunting. Instantly he found himself feeling embarrassed. "You saw my power is awakening. Keep talking and your time will run out sooner than you expect or start working on your project before I can kill you. Your choice, little one." He threatened to not let her see what he felt.
Ammra shrugged. "Let's head back to the city and get our supplies! We'll move today."
Miraak might not tell all of his plans. But Ammra had spent a great deal of her time searching about his past before confronting him in Apocrypha. She knew Miraak need her soul for his portal. Hermaeus Mora also told her about his plan on betraying him. Odds between them will benefit her for now so she decided to not meddle and focus on her purpose. As long as she did not let him kill her, things should run according to her plan.
"You questioned him why he did not kill you. Then why didn't you kill him either when you had the chance?" she asked herself as two of them walked toward Witherun. The answer remained the same; she just couldn't do it.
