“So…” I mumble, sitting across from Dev on the opposite side of the couch. Leoni has been gone all of two days and the only thing I can think of is keeping my distance from him. Any by the growing silence between us, I’d guess he is trying to do the same thing.
“Did you want to watch a movie?” He asks, grabbing the television remote and offering it to me.
“I think I will just go crawl into bed and look at more of the books you brought back today.” I smile, forcing myself to stand.
“You could take a night off from all that reading.” He says, disappointment on his face. “We already have one way out of this pact.”
“That is, if Leoni finds the paperwork. It’s been weeks since we left it there. It could have blown away, been rounded up or even stolen.” I tell him.
The more I think about the plan, the more I realize how much of a pipe dream it is. With rogues lurking in that area and those alphas out there looking for trouble, I can’t imagine anything has been left untouched.
He sighs heavily, leaning forward as he nods his head in agreement. Then he stands and places the remote back on the coffee table and walks out of the room. I blink at his back as it disappears, confused by his response, or rather lack thereof.
“Are you coming?” He calls out down the hallway as I stride across the room and peek around the wall, seeing him standing on the steps, waiting for me. “If you are going to be looking, I might as well keep you company and do the same thing.”
“You didn’t bring very many things with you this time, so I figured I could get through all of it pretty quickly.” I shrug, walking toward him. Dev stands on the step, towering above me as I look up at him.
“I also found some lore about it and other bonds online, so I will use my computer to look through those.” He says, stepping to the side to let me pass. “We will have to tread carefully with the things we learn from the lore as it is not just from werewolves or lycan lore, but human opinion on it and such.”
“Hmm, I see.” I mutter, moving past him. “What kind of things have you read so far?”
He chuckles behind me.
“Lots of interesting, but incorrect assumptions about our kind, but also surprisingly accurate guesses.”
“Well, how about I look at the interesting stuff this time” I offer, glancing at him over my shoulder. He grins, trying to push past me, but I press my body to the side as he tries to go, sprinting up the stairs.
“Not a chance in hell.” He calls out, his incoming footsteps loud as if he is right behind me.
The second my hand hits the doorknob, it’s ripped away as I am lifted and spun around. I squeal, laughing as he throws the door open and abandons me. When I make it into the room, he is next to the bed and I lunge for him. Our bodies collide as I hit his side, throwing him into my soft bed, the pillows bouncing around in retaliation for disrupting their pretty set up.
Dev’s laughter fills the room as I crawl over him, leaning over the edge of the bed and swipe his laptop. His fingers graze over my bare stomach and I shudder involuntarily at his touch, my whole body reacting to him like I’d just touched a bolt of lightning. I slip his computer under the skewed pillows. Then I find the edge of the bed with my palms and I press up on my hands and knees as I look down at him.
He doesn’t bother to move his hands, his eyes growing impossibly dark as his fingertips gently caress my stomach. We are in quite the precarious position when I fully take stock of where I am on him. My left knee edged up toward his armpit, my other at his true waist, my pelvis hovering over the mass expanse of his muscles chest. Dev has to tilt his head back to fully look at me as he grins.
“Has anyone ever told you how pretty you are?” He asks.
My throat closes up, and I have to remember to breathe as I inhale, sucking back my saliva and choking like the true idiot I am. I sit back, slamming my hand over my chest, trying to bring myself back to life while he grips my waist and pushes me down so he can sit up. He watches me with worry as I try to hide the embarrassment behind fake laughter and he frowns.
“I take that as a no, then.” He mutters.
“Well…It’s been a while.” I give him a shy smile. “I wasn’t exactly ugly or useless in high school, had a lot more to compliment than I do now.”
“Don’t say that.” He whispers like my words offend him. I shake my head and chuckle.
“You have said it before yourself,” I remind him, and he glares at me.
“I’m not exactly all that smart. Complete idiot really.” He shrugs before he looks down and clears his throat.
I follow his eyes and gasp, throwing myself from his lap. Holy shit, I was just straddling him. Like I wanted to ride him into next Thursday. I mean, the bond makes me want to do that but…He has a mate he wants one day…and one thing I learned about this stupid bond is that I am far more fertile than I would be in an ordinary relationship.
It’s like ovulation on steroids. The whole point is to get me pregnant quickly, so the person who wants a kid gets it. I mean, if the other party already has a mate, less sex with the breeder the better for that relationship, I would assume. So riding Dev will have to forever be an off limits thing, even after this breeder’s bond is broken.
I can only hide. I am the daughter of traitors for so long before someone asks questions. Hell, I’m surprised no one has asked more about me. Maybe it’s because of Dev’s status. He seems highly revered as a warrior and liked by the king. Perhaps they trust his judgement.
“You can look at the computer.” He offers, standing next to the bed, dragging his hands through his hair. “I’m going to go use the shower.”
“You literally showered after lunch.” I say, my nose scrunching in confusion. Maybe he hates how I smell? But then again…
“Yeah, cold showers when I’m around you have become a regular thing for me.” He says, smirking like there is a joke I should be getting.
“Uh, that sounds unpleasant?” I offer, watching him glide out the bedroom door.
It feels like I can finally breathe the second the door shuts. The never ending sexual tension following him as I sit in the silence and drop back onto the bed.
“Why does he have to be so damn sexy?” I groan, grabbing the pillow and slamming it into my face as I let out a frustrated scream before I push it to the side and sighing as I roll to my stomach.
I grab his computer, pushing it open, watching the lock screen pop up as I frown at it. He must have been flustered by all the…accidental touching and forgot to tell me what his password is.
“Let’s see,” I mutter, typing in random combinations and failing. “Password. Nope. Iluvtofight. Nope. Imsosexy. Nope.”
Nothing seems to work, not even his own damn name. I try both Dev and Devlin, and nothing works. I get the sinking feeling he rushed off intentionally fast in order to make me suffer as I wait. So I get comfy, laptop open on my lap as I watch the door. It doesn’t take long for him to pop back in, hair dripping onto his bare shoulders.
“You have a password.” I tell him, and he grins.
“I sure do.” He winks as I scoff, really only upset that he has the audacity to be shirtless. WHo said he could be in here without a full clothing?
“Get yourself decent and come unlock this thing, please.” I offer him a fake over the top smile as he rolls his eyes and pulls a shirt on.
Then he moves over, sitting incredibly close for someone not touching me and shakes his wet hair out. I squawk, my hands blocking my face from the onslaught of water as he steals his laptop, types in his password, and hands it back.
“I have the places I felt were likely to have some possibilities open in the tabs.” He suggests, moving from the bed and climbing into his little spot on the floor, rolling to his side.
“You are going to try to sleep?” I ask, shocked as he hums his positive response. “Don’t you want to know if I find anything?”
“Nope, not unless you think it will help or is something you want to try,” He says, a yawn taking over his words.
“Well, okay then,” I mutter, a little disappointed he doesn’t want to sit next to me. But I also realize it would put us both in the danger zone with the way this damn bond keeps interfering in everyday affairs.
I click on the first tab, scrolling through endless pages of drivel about the mate bond and all it does to an individual. A frown pulls at the corner of my lips, reading about everything I lost when my mate rejected me. A decision I would back up because I want someone to want me, but still…it hurts.
I click through all the bonds on the site, finding the breeder bond in the ‘Kinks’ section. With an eye roll, I read through it. Humans, it seems, have very vivid imaginations and a lot of spare time.
Though the more I read, the more I see similarities to how this bond feels. This blogger isn’t entirely off base, except for the whole romanticizing of this bond. The whole point of it is to knock the breeder up, not establish a romantic relationship.
As I scoff, reading further down, I see what I am hoping for, ways out of it. I perk up a bit, adjusting how I am sitting as I settle into the fifty tips on how to break a breeder’s bond. Then I quickly deflate reading how each tip has an asterisk informing the reader that these are all opinions and gives a reason why such tip might not actually work after all.
The first ten are obvious. ‘Just bang it out’ and ‘Use condoms’ combination and all are such easy and useless ways. Obviously, this writer doesn’t know the rule that the bond makes me fertile until I get knocked up. Then I get to birth a sweet child for someone else to love.
Until I get to tip seventeen, which isn’t meant to break it, but ease the pull of the bond to help anyone stuck in it that doesn’t want it fight the urge.
“The bodies crave closeness, so potentially, providing that without crossing the line may actually help keep the bond from craving just sex. Potential drawback, it will make it much worse and eventually both parties could just give in.” I murmur, pinching my lip with my thumb and forefinger.
I mean, it’s not like we don’t have the other option coming in a few days from Leoni…Hopefully. But if anyone will find it, I know it will be Leoni. She may hint that she wants me and Dev to give in, but I think she wants me around longer than giving him a kid.
I read on for a few solid hours, highlighting potential possibilities and placing them in a memos tab. The last option, which one source claims, worked for them, being that ensuring both partners finish, without penetration, it releases the pact.
It seems too good to be true, while also sounding absolutely terrifying. To give into that pull between us, but also give him so much of me so I can lose him…I’m not sure I could recover from that. But I highlight anyway, pasting it into the memos as a last resort. Then I set the computer to the side as I settle in and lay down, rereading the options as it sits beside me until I fall asleep.
