I sit up from the couch, my eyes narrowing when I hear someone in the woods outside. All the lights are off as I watch a large shadowy figure sniff by the window, clearly searching for something. I creep over, pushing aside the curtain to see Paxton just leaving my view.
Shit. I really thought we would have more time before he showed his sorry ass here, but clearly Leoni hurt his pride more than she let on. I inch toward the back of the house, the early morning sunlight peeking in through windows and partially opened curtains.
“Leoni!” Paxton roars from the tree line near the deck stairs. I watch him as he calls for Leoni like a wild man who lost his mind.
It is clear he is in worse shape than she was when she showed up, but it doesn’t bring a lick of pity for the asshole. There are many times I wanted to kick his ass just to remind him where he stands in the hierarchy.
When it is clear, he won’t be leaving until she shows her face. I move to the back door, pushing it open as I linger in the house's shade. His eyes search the windows above as he paces back and forth, a permanent sneer on his battered face.
“Is there something you need this early in the morning, Paxton?” I ask, my voice much calmer than the swirling storm raging in my chest.
“Why the hell are you here?” He asks, startled by my voice, before he whips his head in my direction.
“I’ve been staying here,” I say casually, not that he has the right to question me, anyway.
I am far and beyond his superior. He is just a grunt in my eyes, a jerk who hides behind the king’s orders to enjoy the violence he unleashes on his missions.
“Where is the bitch?” He snarls, his lips curling to show his teeth as if he might scare me into giving him the answer. His weak attempt makes me snicker.
“There are no bitches here,” I shrug, stepping toward him, across the deck.
“She attacked me,” he roars. “Her superior, on a mission ordered by the king himself.”
I nod, shoving my hands into my pocket, taking my time to keep myself calm, though it may come off to Paxton like I am processing his words.
“Tell me, Paxton, was this so-called attack unprovoked?” I ask, arching a brow as I step down the first step in front of him.
It’s not that I give a shit about his answers, but I want to know the depth of the lies he tells. For someone like him to be used and relied on as a warrior and leader for missions, knowing his lies will help me derive his punishment. Even if it comes at a later date without my uncle knowing.
“Yes,” he grinds out the words, his eyes flickering up toward the window. “We had an agreement.”
“And what was this agreement?” I ask, wanting him to admit he knows about the breeder bond between Eden and I. Begging him to openly say he tried to force her to sleep with him. He looks uncomfortable as his lips twitch and I can sense his anger growing.
“I had something she wanted, and she had something I wanted. A fair trade.” He licks his teeth and tries to roll his shoulders back, but winces. No doubt she got quite a few good hits in on him if he is still hurting, even now.
“You blackmailed her. You mean to have sex with you?” I ask. And he narrows his eyes before he lets out a wicked laugh.
“Is that what she told you?” He scoffs. “I simply suggested a s She didn’t have to agree to the terms, but she wanted what I had.”
Paxton looks so smug, an evil glint in his eyes that says he knows exactly what he was doing. At least I know he isn’t afraid of me knowing the truth. I expected him to hide it, but it makes sense that he is too bold, too prideful to hide anything. I descend the last two steps, making my way to him in a slow saunter, enjoying how he shrinks under my intimidation tactic.
“What is it you had, Paxton?” I ask.
“Proof that you are a fraud. Your so-called morals are fake, and you hide behind them like a coward. It’s disgusting, boasting about being against it, then taking a breeder of your own.” He chuckles, enjoying every word he tosses my way.
I nod, letting him rant on about me and my apparently too high moral standards. He doesn’t need to know the truth behind any of what happened. I couldn't care less what a dick like him thinks of me. It’s he who should be worried about what he is saying to his future king.
“You just couldn’t help yourself when you saw her in that sheer white scrap of cloth, waiting for you to just make her yours, huh? Rumor has it she’s a virgin too…or well…she was, I suppose, by now you’ve already had your fun with her. How tight was she? “
My fist crashes into his jaw, the bone sliding to the side as he grunts and stumbles to the side before falling to the ground. My chest heaves as I glare at the fucking asshole who has long deserved to be put in his place. Rage runs rampant, a barely contained fire whipping into a frenzy.
“How the fuck do you know what they wear at these auctions?” I ask, tilting my head. “Each auction has different rules and set-ups, different colors to represent their brands. Yet you knew this specific auction’s dress code for the girls?”
He spits blood at my feet, his lip twisting in a wicked sneer.
“You want to make this about me when you bought a breeder of your own? Despicable. Your father would be so disappointed. “
My heel finds his mouth, his teeth crunching under the force as he chokes on them, head flying back hard with a snap.
“The fuck do you know about how he would feel, you piece of shit?” I sneer at him. My body tenses, my lycan on high alert. The familiar scent of leather and burnt coffee beans hits my nose and my eyes slip closed, my heart falling.
“So you do have a breeder?” My uncle’s voice echoes from the trees to my right. Oh, Touché Paxton. Without proof of the contract, this fucker tried to get me to admit it out loud all along. Thankfully, I didn’t admit shit to this asshole.
“No, I don’t.” I spin, looking at him with sincerity. Did I have a breeder a few hours ago? Sure I did. But do I now? No. As far as I know, the burning of the bond contract worked.
“Tell me the truth.” My uncle’s voice reverberates through my head, the strength of it demanding I bow down and follow his direct order and not lie when answering his question.
“I am,” I clip out, meeting his curious gaze.
He relents, humming in thought before he looks down at Paxton. I can see the fear creeping in on Paxton as he shakes with unbridled anger.
“Go and fetch the girl.” My uncle orders him.
Paxton shoots me a bloody toothed grin, his eyes full of glee at the potential of what will happen next. I look up at the window, Leoni leaning out before she growls low.
“I will bring her down.” She yells down to my uncle. I don’t miss the look of disdain on her face when she addresses him, making me want to question her more about her true feelings about him and why.
“Someone needs to put that bitch down or control her.” Paxton slurs his words, the blood dribbling from his mouth. I shoot him a sly smirk, enjoying his suffering. How can I not when I’ve witnessed him enjoy so much suffering, even when it comes to those who don’t deserve it?
“Leoni is my warrior,” I remind Paxton as he spits out a wad of blood away from my uncle.
“She is my warrior first,” my uncle says, his voice icy like he is trying to put me in my place. It’s hard to tell if he is upset with me or trying to ensure I know my place for now, which is still under him. But that won’t be for long.
“Uncle,” I say, just as the door opens and Leoni walks out holding a pale Eden’s hand.
I frown, confused why she is still looking so sick. Shouldn’t she be feeling better by now? Unless something went wrong and instead of breaking the bond, it somehow made her sick.
Leoni makes a face at me, as if she is trying to use the mindlink to tell me something, but all I hear is static and I realize my uncle has shut down the ability for us to speak for now.
Shit. This means he not only believes Paxton without evidence, but he will more than likely use his alpha command on Eden and Leoni to derive the truth. Fuck. All I can do is hope they are able to find loophole answers.
“King Cedric.” I say, my last-ditch attempt to stop him, but he glares at me instead.
“I am not addressing you right now.” He barks out, surprising me. Then he whips his angered gaze over to Eden.
“Tell me the truth. Are you in a contract with him as his breeder?” He orders.
Eden blinks at him, her body shrinking under the weight of his order. She shakes her head side to side, biting her lips as she looks at her feet.
“No.”
“Look at me when you answer your king,” He hisses. Eden snaps her eyes up to meet his, but her body gives away how uncomfortable she is. But then she stands a little straighter.
“No, sir. There is no contract between us.” Her eyes skirt to me for a split second, the two of us realizing that the bond must really be broken.
“And you are sure of it?” He asks, moving closer to her. Eden meets his eyes, watching him closely.
“I am. I am not a contracted breeder to anyone.” She says her words now with more conviction, as my uncle seems to breathe a little easier.
“And you, did you attack Paxton, your commanding officer?” He asks her, and she blinks at him.
“No, I kicked his ass when he grabbed my boob, sir.” Her words are full of bite and more sass than she should use with the king, but he says nothing, just frowning over at Paxton.
“And this trade off he speaks of?” He asks.
“I asked her to retrieve me an intact breeder’s contract.” I cut in and he growls at me.
“He did,” Leoni confers. “And Paxton had one. He offered a trade, and I changed my mind. He took advantage of an order I was given and the grief I am carrying.”
“Paxton, stand your big ass up.” My uncle roars, snapping his fingers as his warriors come forward and collect Paxton up. “Take him to the dungeon. No food or drink for a week, silver cuffs and wolfsbane vapor.”
“What?” He roars, scrambling to break away.
“And Leoni, report to the pack house in three hours for your lashings.” He says, turning and walking away.
“King Cedric, I will take her punishment.” I say immediately. He pauses, turning back to look at me. His eyes narrowed before he nods in agreement.
“That is fine, as she was following your orders,” He murmurs, disappearing into the woods.
