My stomach flutters, staring up into Dev’s eyes. He means it, every word he is saying. He doesn’t care about my past aside from the trauma that plagues me and he wants to fix. I don’t know what I expected, but this…was not it. His thumb strokes over my cheek, gently gliding over my lips as I inhale, begging for him to press his lips to mine in the silence between us.
Every kiss we have had, every moment has been let by the physical need to be closer, or being too close our bodies react, but this kiss I want, it’s not about the pressure of his. It’s about how it binds his words, seals them to me in a way I will never be able to doubt it even though I will still try to.
“D-do you want to know what I did?” I ask, curious if he actually believes me. He chuckles, those silver eyes drinking me in before he tilts his head to the side.
“Did you kill a warrior or senior wolf?” He asks, but he doesn’t step back or remove his eyes from my face.
“Well no,” I furrow my brows.
“Then why should I care?” He mutters, his forehead pressing to mine. “Right now, I just want to hear you say it.”
“Say what?” I ask, my eyes falling closed as my lungs inflate with his warm breath.
“That you love me too…” My eyes fly open and I instinctively take a step to the side, but he follows me, not allowing an inch between us. “Uh unh, you do not get to run away from this conversation.”
“Dev, love is such a big word…” I say, my heart bursting from my chest.
“It’s four letters, below average, really for a big word.” He grins and I roll my eyes.
“I’m serious.” I give him a stern look. Dev shakes his head.
“Fine, don’t say it. It doesn’t bother me as long as you let me kiss you.” His lips press closer, barely brushing over mine as he seeks permission. Hilarious considering the other few times we kissed, he didn’t bother to ask.
“What does it mean?” I ask. His eyes meet mine, wrinkling as he frowns.
“What do you mean by ‘what does it mean’?” He asks, his hold on me loosening.
“We have kissed before and it didn’t solve anything; it actually felt like it caused more problems. Now you admit you have feelings for me and you want to kiss…does anything change?” I ask him and his face scrunches.
“It means–” he pauses, stepping away from me before he turns and shrugs. “It means we are dating?”
It’s not a statement, more of a question as he watches me hopeful, for a positive reaction. There is no fighting the smirk on my lips as I cross my arms over my chest.
“So you are asking me out on a date?” I raise a brow, teasing him.
“Yes.” He nods firmly with a giddy grin. “Eden, would you go on a date with me?”
I press my lips together tightly, fighting back a giggle before I nod my head.
“Uh, a date could be fun.” I shrug, trying to be nonchalant about it all, even though my soul is soaring and my heart is doing a tap dance. I’ve never been on a date before. He swoops in close, reaching for my cheeks as he cups my face.
“So I can kiss you now?” He asks, hope oozing from his pleading eyes. A thrill runs through my spine and I laugh at him.
“No,” I shake my head, enjoying this new power I have over him as he frowns. “After our date, if the timing and mood are right, you won’t even need to ask.”
“So breakfast date, then? We can make it back to the house in eight minutes if we run.” He teases and I laugh loudly.
“You are ridiculous.”
“You bring it out in me,” He admits, slipping his hand through his brown wavy hair. It drives me crazy, watching the way his biceps ripple under such a miniscule movement. I start to walk away from him, moving backwards.
“Well, I am going to finish my run since Leoni is waiting for me. How about you let me know that plan later?” It is taking everything in me to not act like a giddy fool in front of him before I turn my back to him and close my eyes, grinning like an idiot before forcing it away and breaking into a run. Dev’s eyes follow me. I can feel the weight of them as I put distance between us and find Leoni stretching in the sunrise ahead of me.
“Well, don’t you look chipper,” she chuckles as I run a circle around her, smiling. Leoni’s eyes follow me, full of suspicion, as she places her hands on her hips. “Want to explain what’s up?”
“Just having a good day already.” I shrug, intentionally drawing more of her attention as she scoffs.
“Right. Well, I demand to know,” she says.
“Fine.” I tell her smugly, but truth be told, I am bursting to tell her everything, anyway. “Dev asked me out on a date.”
Her face falters for a moment before she squeals in excitement. My eyes narrow and I frown, watching her closely. I didn’t imagine the way she looked, as if she wants to say something but changes her demeanor to please me?
“What was that?” I ask. Leoni blinks at me and tilts her ear to her cheek.
“What was what? The squeal of excitement?” She asks.
“No, the face you made before you got excited.” I eye her up, watching her movements and exhale.
“It’s just that…what are you going to wear on this date? Where are you guys going, when is it, and what are you doing?” She asks. “Because all you have are the hand-me-down leftovers for long-term guests. Nothing in that closet screams ‘sexy date night’”
My cheeks flush and I press my hands to my face.
“He didn’t say it was a sexy date, but I know he wants to kiss me.” I can’t fight the smile and giggle that escapes, and she reaches out, looping her arm into mine.
“Well, then let’s hurry up and get home so we can find you that perfect ‘kiss me’ outfit.”
“Can I borrow something from you?” I ask her and she snorts.
“Hell no, we are going shopping and I am buying you the perfect outfit. My alpha’s good mood depends on that kiss, so I’m going to make sure he gets it.” She winks at me as we break into a jog, taking the shortcut through the woods to her house, passing the back of the pack house.
A huge white limousine pulls around to the back, doors opening as people flood out, their backs to us as they look up at the mansion.
“Who are they?” I ask in passing, and Leoni grows quiet, her lips forming words, but she makes no sound. “Uh, hello? Everything okay?”
“Yes…” She snaps her attention back to me. “Sorry, just, the pack is expecting a prominent alpha family, but it looks like they came a few days early.”
“Ah, so Dev will be busy?” I ask, my stomach sinking about the potential of our date bing canceled.
“Nah, my guess is he will try to hide and be around more.” She mumbles. “Now, what is your favorite color? I know you seem to lean toward the neutral colors, but I want you in something that will make your brown eyes really pop.”
“Well, I used to love soft pinks, but now it just reminds me of my scars and the fire…so maybe purple? Like deep purple?”
“And dress? No dress? Skirt, or pants.” Leoni is already planning things in her head, her mind whirling with options as she speaks to herself and not me, her eyes scanning my body a few times before muttering her personal findings about me to herself, adding them to her mental notes.
I glance over my shoulder once more, looking at the fancy people walking away from the limousine, a woman wearing a dusty blue sundress flowing in the wind, catching my eyes as I feel drawn to her every movement. A laugh drifts our way as we leave the line of sight and it tickles my senses, my body tingling and feeling a sense of dread.
In all my life I’ve never met anyone that fancy, hell that is the first time I have seen a limousine in person as well. But something feels different, off almost like my whole world is about to be rocked all over again. Though, it could be struggling with real happiness after so long of being starved of it…
Or it could be exactly what it feels like, and all my happiness is about to be sucked away from me.
