“Hastings?” Leoni mumbles from behind me as I turn to look at her. Clearly, she has lost her mind. It is not Hastings running toward us, it is Eden. I try to focus on her, but she doubles before my eyes focus again. Everything feels hazy, like steam has erupted from the ground and suddenly my arms are light, feeling as if I am floating.
Something is wrong, but I don’t care what it is as I whip back around searching for those arms that are eager to wrap around me. I search for Eden in the haze, my chest aching for her touch, but she is nowhere.
My mind feels muddled, eyes heavy as I try to blink away the heavy confusion settling in. Where did Eden go, has she changed her mind and run off? A thud behind me makes me spin, slow and with no cares as I look down and see Leoni, eyes closed and sprawled out on a moss pad.
“Oh.” is all I can manage to say, more of a sound than anything poignant. She shouldn’t be on the ground. We should be doing something else, but I can’t quite put my finger on it. Instead, I grin, finally seeing Eden as she smiles at me, a wave of her hand shyly and all else doesn’t matter.
“You’re safe.” I mutter, my chest exploding with tingles as I try to lift my leg and take a step forward, only to fall, my eyes closing just as I hit the ground and everything blanks out.
My eyes refuse to open, my arms protesting any semblance of movement, but my ears prickle with awareness as I hear a voice and the mention of my name.
“Dad, I’m telling you, he is Alpha Deveraux,” someone whispers urgently. “We can’t just lock him up and expect it to hold him.”
“He remains here until we know what he wants and whose side he is on. Besides, he is drugged. He won’t be going anywhere, anytime soon.” The voice from earlier says with an air of authority.
“He is the heir. Of course he is on the other side! Not to mention he is the one who executed us.” The younger hisses before the older man chuckles.
“Mmm, weird how alive we are for being executed, Travis. Go and find your mother so we can formulate a plan before we bring this mess to the elder’s/.”
There is a huff of air and a slamming door as I groan, turning onto my back, looking like a drunk man trying to pretend they are fine. It drains me just trying to move as I take a second and look up at the ceiling and the branches woven throughout it.
“Where we that easy to find?” He asks and I tilt my head in his direction, taking in the upper middle-aged man. His arms show burn scars and his face is stern as he glares at me like I am the enemy he has been trying to kill his whole life.
“No,” I admit, my voice hoarse and painful as I force myself up to sit. My head feels as if an axe was taken through the center of it. My eyes struggle to focus and I choose to close them, inhaling deeply to stave off the bout of nausea that seems to only grow with every passing second.
“Does your uncle know you are here?” He asks, jumping right into interrogation mode. His eyes are stoic, showing nothing, but his sneered lip shows disgust and rage. For me or my uncle, I can not tell, not that it really makes a difference.
“Where is the woman who was with me?” I ask, hoping Leoni is faring better than I am with whatever this feeling is from the shit they poisoned us with.
“Don’t you worry about her.” He says, which makes me peek out at him with one wary eye.
“She is my friend, someone I care about and will kill for. Don’t underestimate me just because I am compliant now. Where is Leoni?” My voice is even and menacing as he licks his teeth, glaring for a moment before he clears his throat and backs down, sticking his hands in his pockets.
“She is being taken care of.” He shrugs, trying to be nonchalant, but I can see the hint of truth in his eyes. Leoni may not be getting royal treatment, but she is alive and here, which is all I need to know for now. The next part will be figuring out a way to get her released and ourselves out of this mess.
“Good.” I murmur, smacking my lips together.
“Unfortunately for you, our founder just left and he can not make it back for a bit, so you are stuck with me for now.”
“Oh yippee,” I force out, trying to sound condescending, but it takes too much energy to feel anything more than heavy.
“The effect of the herbs will wear off in about a day.” He finally sighs. “Until then, I will let you rest and get your mind ready for the hard questions.”
“Hard questions?” I snort, pressing my head to the wall. “I have nothing to hide from you. And I doubt I will find any of them hard to answer.”
He moves to the door and I swing my head in his direction, forcing my eyes open wider.
“You are Eden’s father.” I whisper matter of fact and his face goes stony, jaw clenching.
“What if I am?” He asks.
“Is she safe?” I ask with no hesitation, the question only scratching the surface of what I really want to ask.
Is she happy? Has she found a home where she will finally thrive and be able to learn to trust and live again? Are they going to help her through her trauma and do everything to make sure she knows she will never lose them again?
But with my brain so filled with nonsense, all I can do is ask the basic most necessary answer I need.
“Of course she is. We are her family.” He scoffs like it is common sense, but I don’t care about his shit attitude. All I heard want to hear is that she is safe and I can’t help but smile and grin like a fool.
“Good, good.” I whisper, exhaling heavily.
He pauses, watching me with a genuine confusion and curiosity, his head tilting to the side.
“Why do you ask? As far as I am concerned, you are the one who held her captive.” He says, pacing over to the bars. “Why do you care about her safety now?”
“It’s complicated.” I wave my hand in the air like it’s not a big deal, and he scoffs.
“I intended to get the whole story when you are back to yourself in the morning.” He mutters, moving back to the door.
“Hey,” I holler out as he is stepping out the door once more. I press my finger to my lips and shush him. “Shhh, don’t tell her I am here. She hates me. It will make her so mad.”
I can’t help but giggle even though it makes no sense why I do it before I press my head to the wall again and groan, trying to force my brain to clear. He doesn’t respond, instead he leaves, the door closing behind him as I slump to the side and look at the wall.
“This is some good shit,” I mutter to no one, my brain telling me it is done and my body whispering the need for sleep as I smack my lips together once more and slip into an easy slumber.
I wake to Leoni shoving at me, her hands sting on my face as she slaps me across the cheek.
“What the fuck?” I growl out, my eyes popping open, and I scowl at her. Relief floods her face as she exhales and grins.
“Are you still drugged up?” She asks and I think about it. My body feels normal again, the lightness in my limbs gone and heaviness in my eyes evaporated, but most excitedly, the brain fog has also cleared up.
“I don’t think I am,” I admit, with a sly smirk. “Thank the heavens.”
“Good, then let’s go.” She sighs, then stands, pushing the cage door open with ease. I glare at her, annoyed.
“You don’t mean to tell me that stupid door has unlocked the whole time?” I ask her and she chuckles, then grins at me.
