“No, Eden came to visit and show me you were okay and she left it unlocked.”
My heart sinks and I look at her but say nothing. I don’t have a right to be upset that Eden wanted nothing to do with me. It’s exactly what I expected and what she needs to do. And yet some idiotic deep part of me still held hope that maybe she missed me too.
“So, uh, how is she?” I ask, probably sounding more eager than I have a right to.
“She is safe,” she frowns, her face giving away more than her words.
“Safe,” I repeat the word, reminding myself I wanted her safe. But safety doesn’t always foster happiness. You can be safe and lonely. “Just safe, but something else is wrong, right?”
“She asked me to stay,” Leoni says, watching me closely. I nod, swallowing roughly before I clear my throat.
“You should.” I tell her, getting up and moving to the cage door. “You would be of more use to her than you would to me.”
“Oh, unh uh. Don’t you dare,” she hisses from behind me.
“It’s the truth, Leoni.” I sigh, my head rolling back in annoyance. “I’m not feeling sorry for myself here, but I am a rogue and I have nothing to offer anyone.”
“There are rogues here too…” Leoni says and I deflate, pressing my lips together.
“Not me.” I say, and she looks distraught.
“Well, we can discuss that all later.” She waves me off and takes me out onto the floating walkway. It sways and my fingers grip the rope, my knuckles turning white as I gasp like a frightened child and look at her wide eyed.
“This is awful.” I grind out, and she chuckles.
“That is exactly what I told Eden. Apparently, it will take some time to get used to it.” She shrugs, but I see the way she clings to the rope like me.
“Which way is the way out?” I whisper, and she arches a brow before she turns her back to me, motioning for me to follow her.
I follow her, my eyes open, looking for anyone who might try to stop us, but the strangest thing happens as a couple passes us and Leoni opens her mouth and tells them to have a good evening. They even give me a kind smile before going on about their time together.
“What was that?” I hiss at her, moving closer so no one else can hear.
“Manners?” She quips and I glare at the back of her head.
“If we are trying to escape, shouldn’t we be, oh I don’t know, invisible?” I grind out and she throws her head back and laughs.
“Who said anything about escaping?” She looks at me over her shoulder and then shakes her head.
“We will be here for a while. You don’t have a choice.” Leoni says, as if she dictates what I do and where I go.
“I think that is up to me.” I scoff, and she shakes her head, and I know she is laughing at me silently.
“Eden coerced whoever is running this place to let us remain on the condition we do not leave and we answer what they want, question wise. If you try to run, they will drug you again. They seem to have a vast supply of herbs that they can mix to cause different effects. I bet Topher would love to know how they do it.” She mutters now, talking to herself more than me.
It doesn’t sit right with me, being here and mostly free when they do not trust me yet. In fact, it feels like a shitty ass tactic to determine if I’m friendly or not. Unless it is someone who knows me well enough to trust, I will be honorable. In which case, which asshole is setting me up for this type of situation to make me stay?
“So, where are you taking me?” I ask Leoni as she hooks a left after a crooked branch with a low lit lamp.
“To where you will be staying. I’m right next to you.” She says, and I exhale, growing more frustrated by the second.
Must I feel completely out of control in order to know what it truly feels like to have it? Nothing has been of my choice, all of it done for others, to help others and even after running away and establishing myself as a rogue, I am yet again in the dark, following fucking orders.
I chose to follow in silence until she stops and shows me my door, grinning from ear to ear. The door is lopsided, bark chipping from a whack job that they ended up slapping together with what looks like tar and string. Like a fairy wonderland where the fairies are evil and crazy resourceful.
“So cute, right?” Leoni giggles, and I scrunch my nose.
“Oh, the cutest.” I grumble, pushing the door open and finding it surprisingly big. Leoni leaves me as I close the door and look around alone.
A king size bed, roughly, is nestled in the corner of the room. A tiny little sitting area is next to a twig window, watching the dark branches as they sway and letting in a cool breeze. There is a sheet on the other side of the room, and when I look at it I see it is their version of a bathroom, very medieval…very concerning for someone like me.
And on a small table is a recycled jug of water and a woman sitting on a stool watching me. Every part of me freezes when I see her, truly see her. I thought it would be different, like it would hurt, but instead of twisting my gut, it releases and I feel like I can be calm, even for a moment.
“Eden…” I whisper her name, afraid I might be hallucinating again. It would make sense of why everything since coming to this place has seemed a little too easy.
“I can’t believe you are actually here.” She says, but I can’t tell if she is pleased or upset.
“You were kidnapped.” I say, my hands up in surrender. “I only came to ensure your safety and now I can leave.”
“No!” she nearly yells, jumping up and stepping forward. “No, don’t go.”
“Then I will stay.” I rush out, moving over to her, but I stop before I am close enough to touch her, my hands slipping to my sides to fight the urge to hold her close. “Only for as long as you want me to stay.”
“Dev…” She says my name and I swear I can hear the angels singing. Then she lifts her eyes and time freezes. Those eyes captivate and control me. “I want to hate you.”
“Then hate me.” I whisper, a lump in my throat as I take a tentative step closer to her.
“And I can never forgive you.” She reminds me and I nod in understanding.
“I don’t blame you. What I did is unforgivable.” I repeat her words and give her the right to hate me, not that she needs my permission. She does it just fine on her own.
“But…right now…right now I really, really just need to pretend I don’t hate you and that you never hurt me. Just for a little bit, and just for tonight…” Tears cling to her eyelashes and I cave in a second.
It’s sick of me to say yes, masochistic really, but if she needs me to, I would die for her. So I will let her break my heart all over again in the morning, but for now…I will let her use me.
“Anything you need.” I assure her and she nibbles her lip, my tongue slipping out to wet my own and then she moves closer, pressing her hands to my chest and slipping them up around my neck before she lays her head on my shoulder.
“Everything is so messed up.” She whispers before she starts to sob
