*Dev*
We can only hope they are trying to follow me first as I try to lead the warriors away from the direction the rebels seem to have fled. Though, even I can’t be sure where they all disappeared to. All I can do now is hope they know their land better than me and the men I trained. Their only hope of survival is their resourcefulness.
“Dev, I screwed up.” Leoni whispers close. I don’t intentionally ignore her as I try to focus on the sounds and scents of the forest, but it is clear she feels that way as she babbles on growing more frantic in her words.
“I should have tried different ways to warn you…tried to figure out a loophole but his wording was so ironclad and I just couldn’t bring myself to figure it out,” Leoni rushes out, all in one breathe, her body ambling into mine twice before I sign heavily.
“We need to focus and not get sidetracked with emotions. It was you who reminded me of that on the journey here.” I level her with a slight annoyance in my voice and I watch the way she seems to crumble for the first time since knowing her.
Guilt rushes through me, and I sigh, pinching the bridge of my nose.
“Look, I’m not mad at you,” I tell her truthfully before I grow distracted by all the scents I am picking up and the way I can’t determine just one location. “Shit, they are everywhere,”
“They sent more warriors than they needed to.”
Leoni murmurs, her lycan on high alert as she straightens her back. “Fuck, this is all my fault.”
“Leoni,” I growl low, turning to face her as I grab her shoulders. “Shut the fuck up and listen. I am not mad, you will fight by my side so I’m going to need you to focus and but emotions behind you. Can you do that?”
She blinks before inhaling deeply and closing her eyes. She shakes out her arms and then bounces from leg to leg as if hyping herself up. When she opens her eyes again, I can’t help but smirk. There she is, the fighter I know and trust.
“I can do that.” She says, looking past me. “We can do this.”
“Any idea who they sent to lead Cedric’s selected warriors?” I ask her, hoping for a little more insight, and she shrugs.
“No idea, not that it matters. I’m in a flipping rage and ready to fuck up whoever I need to.”
I snort, shaking my head from side to side. It’s always nice to see the beast you bring into battle, gearing up like it’s been starved.
“We are labeled as rogues now, so watch your back. They will likely want to kill us,” I tell her as figures begin to exit the trees, stalking toward us. “If given the opportunity, if we are going to die, I want you to run.”
“Fuck that, you aren’t my alpha anymore” she shoots at me but I silence her with my death stare.
“I want to die knowing she will be okay.”
She clenches her jaw but doesn’t respond. Instead, she looks forward, her hands finding her hips as she chuckles.
“Well, if it isn’t Jack.” She teases, the muscular warrior stepping up as if he is the one in charge.
“Leoni,” he addresses her, his voice tense before he looks at me and bobs his head in a small bow. It makes me raise a brow in amusement. Old habits must die hard, even if you are being ordered in a manner you can’t control. “Alpha.”
“I assume you are here for me?” I ask, crossing my arms over my chest, and he looks around before clearing his throat.
“Yes.” He admits, but he looks at the ground. “And also no. We have orders to kill you at all costs.”
It doesn’t shock me, but it does sting, my chest squeezing. Nate told me as much, but shit, everything has happened so fast there’s been hardly a chance to process the potential truths in all the things I’ve been confronted with.
“And all those who aided you in any way.” Jack meets my gaze, a knowing look before he flickers his attention up into the trees.
“Aided me?” I snort and shake my head. “Considering I just escaped from a group of other rogues, I’m not sure you will find many others to kill. Not around these parts, anyway.”
“Mmm,” he hums before he exhales, then he shakes his head as if disappointed. “See, the problem with that is…Leoni shared quite a bit along the way. Thanks for that, by the way.” He says, looking at her. Leoni sticks her middle finger up at him with a glorious smile before she sneers and looks away.
“How many of you have all been alpha ordered?” I ask, just curious how many of his own warriors he can’t even bring himself to trust.
“Not all of us are afraid of you and require extra reassurance,” a voice says from my right. I slide my eyes in that direction, my heart pumping when I see the fuckers who got away the night their little shit group murdered Hastings.
“Good.” Leoni says. Her knees bending as she readies to pounce and licks her lips. Stalking her prey.
“There is no way you can take on all of us,” Jack says, shrugging.
“Not that it really matters because you wanted me dead anyway, right?” I snort and he nods in agreement.
“I am ordered to ensure you are dead. Yes.”
I smile brightly, knowing full well this fight is stacked against us and with no backup, we don’t stand a chance. But in some way, I knew it would all end like this. Me losing Eden and dying in a blaze of gnashing teeth and torn flesh.
“Then let’s get started.” I say before my nose picks up the scent of extreme heat, a vibrant orange ember floating down before my eyes as I look up. I lunge to the right, avoiding a branch that plummets to the earth, shattering into flaming splinters.
The walkways in the air creak and rumble as fire consumes the ropes, the wood falling apart as if the strong knots holding it taut were nothing but liquid. A scream breaks out and my heart plummets. I had hoped they evacuated the entire area, but clearly I was wrong. Shit.
Before I have a moment to reconcile what to do next, my vision is flying, my body twisting as I am tackled to the ground. I hit the ground hard, my back bouncing up as a wolf bounds off me, snagging onto my ankle. The pain awakens me to the real problem at hand. The assholes who want to kill me and not the innocent lives begging for saving.
“Dev!” Leoni growls, leaping forward and shifting into her true form as she twists through the air, catching the asshole by the neck, tearing him from my flesh and releasing his body into the flames that rain down around us.
I am not free for long as teeth break through my skin at my wrists, tugging me in opposite directions. The pain should terrify me but instead it inspires a laugh. Did they think I would be easy and fast?
My hands clench into fists, trapping their teeth in my muscles as I force myself to stand and grin at each one before throwing my head back and releasing a ground shattering howl. It’s not one of pain, or a call for help.
I am letting them all know I have nothing left to lose, which means I will take down any one of these warriors that comes for me. Warriors shrink away, waiting for their opportunity to strike while the special group of fuck wad alphas cling tight to me.
I slam my arms together with deadly force, both wolves hammering into each other with whimpers before they release and try to regain their composure. I refuse to give them the chance, grabbing the one closest to me by the hind leg and roaring as I tear its joints apart and the skin tears with a velcro like rip that makes me shudder in excitement.
There is not an ounce of guilt over ridding the world of these fuckers who take it upon themselves to prey on anyone below them. I focus on them, choosing to kill those who are here of their own free will before moving onto my own would be warriors had I not left my pack and title behind.
Leoni has let go of herself, giving her own beast full control as she bounces between fighters, not truly finishing anyone off before going back to break a neck here and there.
For a moment, I consider doing the same thing, but I remind myself I am more than a killing machine. I am here to protect and make up for my mistakes, not to kill to free myself and live a pointless life.
“You won’t be able to get away.” Jack says, watching me from the side, his eyes focused on me like he is trying to read my next move.
I shrug, though I know he is right as I stalk toward him. No one dares to come at me until the air explodes above me, a tree top tumbling down as it catches me across my shoulder blade, dropping me to my knees with a hiss.
The burning wood sears into me, the scent of burning meat making me swallow roughly as I stare down at Jack, refusing to show him my pain. He flinches, looking away and covering his face, then he takes two steps back.
I lunge forward; the branch slicing me open as I move from under it, my claws out, digging into the side of his neck. Jack’s eyes grow wide in shock, his mouth falling open but only blood dribbles out, no words or breath. Only the shock of his own death stunning him as he bleeds out in seconds and I yank my arm back, hissing in pain.
“Well, fuck.” A voice says, stepping out of the shadow of the trees, moving toward me.
Topher looks at me with a grim look on his face as he bears the weight of the world, and I realize he was one of the warriors sent. Naturally they would send a healer, and with Topher being a friend…I growl in anger, pacing away before I charge at him, my claws raised to take him out, but I stop mere millimeters from his eyes.
“You are going to have to in order to keep me from hurting you.” He says. “I swore to protect you, and to heal…don’t make me break my oath to you…”
My lips pull back, showing my teeth as I try to control my lycan, who wants to be logical. Logic says you eliminate a threat and Topher is most definitely a threat if he has been alpha ordered to harm me.
And yet, I can’t, no, I won’t do it. Instead, I lift him, throwing him away from the heat and trees, his head thudding against the trunk of a tree and his body slumping.
Pain runs up my leg as I turn and look at two wolves tearing at the muscles of my calves, causing me to topple over as I roar out and tear them away by their tails. It’s not long before three more are on me, the five of them deciding to take me on at once to even the odds.
I look over to Topher, worried he will have to witness me get taken out only to find his body is gone and fear grips me…is he going to be the one to deliver my fatal blow?
