"Miss Winslow! You're here!" Anne was the first to react, practically tripping over herself as she rushed forward with an obnoxiously sweet smile.
"Blame Nicole for dragging her feet with the resignation paperwork. Otherwise, we'd have all been downstairs to greet you properly." Her tone was downright groveling, like a puppy desperate for scraps.
I watched as the woman called Miss Winslow draped herself against Leonard with casual intimacy.
"No need for formalities. You're Leonard's employees now, and soon Stanford Group will be under my umbrella too. We run a pretty relaxed ship at my Lumeport headquarters."
She paused, giving a condescending little laugh. "Though I will say your efficiency needs work. All this drama over firing one employee? Pathetic."
"Yes, of course! We'll do better immediately!" Anne practically bowed.
My eyebrow shot up.
From Lumeport? And a Winslow?
"The Winslow family has ruled Lumeport for generations! Rumor has it they've got the ear of everyone who matters in the capital!"
"That's Quincy Winslow herself! The current family head - one of the most powerful women in the city. Completely self-made!"
"Now that's wife material. Nicole doesn't stand a chance, does she?"
Judging by everyone's reaction, this "Miss Winslow" had clearly been making appearances long before today.
How had I missed this? I'd been so buried in my work that my own husband had been parading his mistress right under my nose.
"Miss Winslow?" I kept my voice ice-calm. "So you're comfortable being the other woman?"
Quincy didn't even blink. "Don't be so dramatic," she purred, not a shred of shame in her smirk. "Isn't there a saying? The one who isn't loved is the real third wheel."
She stepped closer, her designer heels clicking like a countdown. "Let me be clear, Nicole. I've claimed Leonard. He's mine now. Do yourself a favor and walk away."
Her smile turned razor-sharp. "But if you're determined to fight me for him? Well... that depends on whether you've got what it takes to win."
She leaned in, her whisper carrying through the dead-silent room: "No one in the capital dares take what Quincy Winslow wants - let alone some provincial backwater like this."
With those words, she'd staked her claim - absolute, unshakable, leaving the entire office speechless at her audacity.
