Leonard's words made me raise an eyebrow in disbelief.
So, he wanted to break into the capital city, Metropolia?
And yet, he hadn't even bothered to mention it to me. Instead, he'd gone the long way around, choosing to rely on the Winslow Family's connections in the port city.
I couldn't help but scoff. How typical—reaching for the stars while ignoring the ladder right in front of him.
After listening to Leonard, Quincy straightened up with a smug confidence.
"Mr. Stanford," she declared, "once I marry Leonard, the Stanford name will rise to new heights—thanks to me."
The noble families in the capital don't just let anyone in, but my Winslow Family can open doors for the Stanfords. Or are you saying you don't take us seriously?
Her arrogance only made the whole thing more laughable.
Was she seriously claiming she could get the Stanfords into Metropolia?
The Winslows themselves barely had a toehold there. How the hell did she think she could pull that off?
I let out a dry laugh, and Nelson's expression darkened even further.
He sighed heavily before speaking in a firm, unyielding tone. "Miss Winslow, your family may be influential in Lumeport, but Leonard is my grandson. And as long as I say no, there will be no divorce."
"Nicole will always be the Stanford Family's daughter-in-law. That is not up for debate."
"Grandpa!" Leonard protested, frustration boiling over.
Enough was enough. I stepped forward. "Mr. Stanford, this isn't about what Leonard wants anymore." My voice was calm, but my words hit like a hammer. "It's about what I want. And I'm done."
Nelson stiffened, shock flashing across his face. Then, to everyone's disbelief, he leaned heavily on his cane and bowed deeply—so low it was practically a kneel.
Gasps rippled through the room. I turned away, an unexpected pang of discomfort twisting in my chest.
But I couldn't let this stand. Before he could fully kneel, I caught his arm and pulled him up. No matter what, I couldn't bear to see a man his age humiliate himself like that.
"Nicole—no, Ms. Beaumont," he corrected, voice strained. "I know Leonard has failed you. That is my failure as his grandfather. I apologize on his behalf."
"All I ask is that, for the sake of our families' past ties, you don't give up on him so quickly. The Stanford Family will never accept this divorce. Not while I'm alive."
"Mr. Stanford," I said quietly, "you know that's impossible. Why force this?"
The moment I'd learned Leonard had orchestrated Anne's attack on me, the Stanfords had become part of my past. Whatever goodwill remained from his friendship with my grandfather? Gone.
"Ms. Beaumont," Nelson rasped, desperation creeping in, "I'm begging you."
He knew my mind was made up. But he also knew—if this divorce went through, everything the Stanfords had built would crumble.
Left with no other choice, he swallowed his pride and begged.
For the sake of his family.
