Maeve smiled and thanked the nurse, glancing down the hospital hallway at the familiar scent, letting out a sigh, "Oh for gods sake."
Derek discreetly made his way down the corridor, slipping past a cleaning cart into the next hallway. Maeve rolled her eyes, huffing in annoyance as she rushed after him.
"Derek!" Maeve grabbed onto his leather jacket, turning him around to face her, raising her brows expectantly.
Derek stared at her in surprise, "What are you doing here?"
"What are you doing here?" Maeve argued, Derek watched a doctor leave one of the rooms, ignoring her question "Derek?"
Once the doctor was out of sight, Derek made his way towards the door, but Maeve caught his jacket again, "Derek!"
"Are you trying to get arrested?" Maeve questioned as he turned around, noticing the police guarded door "Again?"
Derek rolled his eyes, "You offering?"
Maeve glared up at him, "Shut up."
Maeve watched with a frown as the guard walked off, probably changing shifts.
Derek went to open the door, stopping as Maeve once again interrupted, "Uh, Derek? What are you doing!"
"I have to ask him something," Derek replied ominously.
"You can't just waltz in there and demand answers," Maeve crossed her arms over her chest, shaking her head in annoyance "And don't you dare think about threatening him either."
"Why not?"
"Because you have something called integrity," Maeve stated, "Thats just some poor old guy that got attacked. Do you really think he'd pay attention when trying not to die by some rabid werewolf? Let's just nicely ask him what he saw..."
Derek sighed, but nodded, moving aside for Maeve to follow him into the room, the two of them cautiously standing at the end of the hospital bed.
"Who's the alpha?" Derek questioned bluntly, Maeve tried to hold back her laugh at his lack of tact.
Maeve stepped forward, softly calling over, "Sir, could you tell us who the alpha is? No? Okay then, bye bye-"
Derek caught Maeve's shoulder, keeping her in place. Maeve glared daggers at her ex husband, Derek quickly removing his hand before Maeve shouted at him.
Derek glowed his eyes at the patient, in a matter of seconds, all his stats started to go up, staring at Derek in complete terror.
"Great, no need to scare him to death in the process!" Maeve scolded, eyes widening in disbelief as the heart monitor flatlined, "Oh, come on!"
Looking between the machine and the man, Maeve gasped, "Is he dead?"
Derek stayed silent, grabbing Maeve's arm, pulling her out of the hospital room as she muttered complains under her breath.
"Why do you drag me into your stupid ideas!" Maeve exclaimed as they hurried down one of the back staircases, checking over her shoulder to see if anyone was following them "We just killed a man!"
"This was your idea!" Derek argued.
"I didn't propose that we kill him, Derek!" Maeve whisper shouted, staring at her ex in disbelief as he shrugged, "Oh are we playing that game? Yes, let's just go running around killing people, why not?!"
The exes reached one of the fire exits at the bottom of the staircases, Derek opened the door, looking around to check no one was around. Maeve continued to babble behind him, over the years of knowing Maeve, he knew when to tune out of her rants. Derek quickly closed the door, pushing Maeve to hide behind a wall.
Maeve glared at Derek as they squeezed into a tight space, Derek noticed her harsh stare, deciding to watch the doctors head up the stairs instead.
"Isn't your job to question people?" Derek reminded her, the two of them walking out the door into the empty car park with a clear coast, "If anything, you have poor questioning skills."
Maeve scoffed, "Stop taking to me. You truly make me question my sanity."
"You're welcome?" Derek replied, Maeve gazed at him over her shoulder, turning around to unlock her car.
Maeve climbed into the car, whilst Derek stood in the carpark, in her opinion, looking like an idiot.
"Are you getting in the car or would you like to arrested again?" Maeve rolled down the window, motioning sarcastically to the seat next to her, "You know what, get in the car before I arrest you and make you sit here all night."
"I hate you," Maeve grumbled as he sat down next to her, swiftly starting up the car.
Derek nodded slowly, a slight frown on his face, "I gathered that already."
"Good," Maeve hummed, avoiding any eye contact with him, "We're going to my moms first, Lu went for dinner."
"You're going to throw me into the fire by taking me to see your mother?" Derek looked slightly afraid despite his usual scowl.
"No," Maeve sighed, "My mother likes you too much, she'll probably be happier to see you than she is me."
Elizabeth had been surprisingly team Derek even after the couples divorce, Maeve had no idea why, but this is Elizabeth Argent we're talking about, completely unpredictable.
Derek blinked in surprise, but nodded, listening to Maeve ramble on "Luna has a dance recital next week, she's playing a pumpkin, because apparently that's a better role than Cinderella. Oh! promise not to kill anyone there too?"
"I'll try my best," Derek joked, rolling his eyes.
Maeve mocked his smile, "Sure you will... So, are you seeing anyone? Any women I need to scare off?"
Derek turned to look at Maeve in disbelief, his ex rolling her eyes as he raised his brows at her, "Well, are you? I'm not going to sit here and cry, I'm not that weak. I'm just curious how you've spent the last ten months god knows where."
Of course, Maeve had been an emotional wreck for the past year, but Derek didn't need to know that.
"No, I'm not," Derek answered cautiously, not knowing how this conversation would go.
"Have you?" Maeve questioned, pushing away her hair that fell in front of her eyes, "Since, you know."
Derek squinted at her questioningly, "Why are you so interested?"
"I'm just making conversation," Maeve voice squeaked in defence, holding her hands up in surrender.
"Sure you are," Derek mumbled, shaking his head.
"I haven't heard from you in ten months, pardon me for being curious. Ten months is a long time, Derek" Maeve pointed out.
"Long enough to get engaged..." Derek replied bitterly, Maeve glared over at him at his comment.
"We're not here to talk about my questionable decisions," Maeve defended, "Decisions I wouldn't of made if you didn't wonder off in the dead of night never to be seen for months. And you know what, believe it or not i am coping without you. Very well, actually."
Derek nodded slowly, staring at Maeve knowingly as she paused to take a breath, "Yeah?"
Maeve groaned, turning to look back at the road, "Oh don't look at me like that."
"Like what?"
"Like you want me to strangle you," Maeve stated like it was obvious, taking a deep breath at Derek's lingering gaze, "Just ask already, Derek."
Sadness flickered in Derek's eyes, "Are you okay?"
Maeve clutched the wheel, "Better than I was. I still think about it every day, I try not to, to make it hurt less. It doesn't."
Derek nodded in understanding, knowing not to say anything, "Luna understands a little better now, she stopped asking me where her sister was when you left, but when you came back, she asked again."
Derek felt his breath catch in his throat, keeping his gaze on the rain sliding down the window, "She would've been one last month."
The birth of Derek and Maeve's second daughter was a day that Maeve would never recover from. Herself and Derek were already on a rocky patch, the anxiety of a new baby not helping.
Maeve wished she had realised something was wrong, even if it was impossible to know. She just wished she had done something, anything to stop it.
Maeve didn't know when it had happened, it had only been hours ago when everything seemed to be normal, but then delivery came around and Maeve gave birth to a baby girl without a heartbeat, shattering the already broken pieces of the family she was trying to hold together.
Derek blinked in realisation of how long it'd been, "Do you think it would be different? If she were still here."
Maeve bit her lip, shaking her head, "Maybe."
"Mommy!"
Luna jumped into Maeve's arms, tightly hugging her mother, her collection of teddy bears squished between them.
"Hi baby," Maeve smiled, kissing the top of Luna's head as she set her down on the floor, "Were you good for Nana?"
Luna nodded with an innocent smile, turning around to hug Elizabeth "Bye Nana!"
"Go get in the car," Maeve shook her head as her daughter tossed her her backpack and toys, dashing down the driveway after spotting her father in the car.
Elizabeth looked slightly amused spotting Derek turn to greet his daughter, smiling as his daughter babbled on like Maeve, "Why's Derek in your car?"
"It's complicated," Maeve sighed, packing the toys into Luna's backpack, finding another piece of uncompleted homework at the bottom.
"It always is with you two," Elizabeth mumbled.
Maeve looked up from Luna's backpack, glaring at her mother in annoyance, "Don't look so happy to see him."
"I'm not!" Elizabeth exclaimed defensively.
"Sure," Maeve drawled, "I may hate his guts but he's Luna's dad, it's inevitable that he'll be around, mom."
"Just be careful," Elizabeth warned, "I can't see you heartbroken all over again. Or Derek for that matter."
"Derek and I?" Maeve laughed in disbelief, "Never gonna happen, mom. Have you forgotten I'm engaged?"
"Hmm," Elizabeth began disapprovingly, "We'll talk about another time."
"Right, well, at that," Maeve smiled sarcastically, picking up Luna's backpack before turning away, "I'm leaving. Bye mom!"
"Did you have fun?" Derek questioned, leaning back to buckle Luna into her carseat, the six year old too busy rambling on about her day to care about him babying her.
Luna nodded, blue eyes filled with excitement, "Yeah! Nana told me a secret."
"Did she?"
"She didn't mean to... it was an accident," Luna grinned mischievously.
In accident being Luna had very good ways at knowing how to get what she wanted. And despite her intimidating nature, Elizabeth was a push over when it came to her granddaughter.
Derek noticed her smile, raising a brow in curiosity, "What did she tell you?"
"It's a secret! I can't tell you..." Luna exclaimed, incredibly offended at the thought, "Honestly, Dad."
Derek froze at her words, hearing the words Maeve used to say so often, honestly, Derek.
Maeve climbed back into the car, glancing over at Luna suspiciously, "Am I supposed to believe that you behaved yourself today?"
Luna was no angel, after all, she was a Hale, but she had Maeve's innocent smile that won over every argument.
Luna grinned, taking her backpack from Maeve, "Of course, mommy."
Maeve laughed under her breath before putting on a serious expression, "Derek tell your daughter to do her maths homework, she has a month of catching up to do."
"My daughter?" Derek looked between them in amusement, Luna pouted with a groan.
"Yes your daughter," Maeve corrected, "I used to do my homework, those are obviously your genes."
Whenever Luna did something wrong, she was Dereks daughter... even if all of her mischievous and sneaky qualities were from her mother.

"Stiles!"
Derek lay on the drink of death in the veterinary clinic floor, his only hope laying in the arms of Stiles Stilinski.
Derek knew the world was not in his favour right now. Especially with the saw in Stiles' trembling hands.
A flustered Scott dashed into the room, almost falling to his feet, holding the bullet tightly in his hand.
Straightening up, Scott's eyes doubled at the saw Stiles held over Derek' s arm, "What the hell are you doing?"
"Oh, you just prevented a lifetime of nightmares," Stiles fell back against the cupboards, gasping in relief.
"Did you get it?" Derek asked, clenching his teeth in pain. Scott nodded, "Call Maeve."
The two teens shared a confused glance, wondering what their favourite detective had to do with this.
"Maeve? Why would I call -" Stiles stumbled over his words, eyes narrowing at Derek, "Oh my god. You!"
Derek lazily looked over to Stiles, "Me?"
"You're her ex?" Stiles exclaimed, scrambling to his feet, "You and Maeve? Our Maeve?"
Stiles had been highly fond of Maeve since she was interning for his father, but the ex husband saga was something he could never get information on, but now he knew, he couldn't be more confused.
Scott stood in silence, blinking in surprise as he looked between the both of them.
Derek rolled his eyes, slumping back against the table, "Yes."
Scott finally blinked away his surprise, "You have a kid?"
"Why is that so hard for you to grasp?" Derek asked, annoyance in his voice.
For the two teens that absolutely detested Derek with every fibre of their bodies, the thought of him being a father was incomprehensible.
"You're, well, you," Scott mumbled with a shrug, "And Luna's so sweet."
"Not on a bad day," Stiles added in, Dereks glare keeping him quiet.
Derek leant his head on the table, squeezing his fists in pain, "Just call Maeve."

"What are you gonna do with it?" Stiles questioned as Derek finally took the bullet from Scott, Maeve taking longer than excepted to arrive.
Well, long enough after Stiles I gracefully screeched 'Derek's dying' down the phone and hung up. Knowing Maeve's anger towards him, Derek wasn't surprised if Maeve left him to suffer until the last second.
"I'm gonna - I'm gonna -" Derek's voice grew weaker, falling back against the floor, the bullet falling from his hand, rolling into the drain.
"No. No, no, no, no!" Scott dived after the bullet, kneeling down to try and pull it out of the drain.
Maeve rushed through the main doors of the clinic, setting Luna down in the waiting room, nervously staring down at her, "Wait here."
Luna nodded, watching her mother dash into the other room in confusion. Maeve slammed open the door, eyes widening in shock at Dereks body on the floor, feeling the air being knocked out of her chest at the sight alone.
"Derek?" Maeve exclaimed, dropping her bag to the floor, running to kneel down beside Derek "What the hells going on?"
Derek blinked awake, muttering with a small groan, "Wolfsbane."
"Are you okay?" Maeve helped him sit up slightly, pushing Stiles back to help Scott with whatever he was lying on the floor for.
Luna came running in, looking around in curiosity, only to gasp at Derek lying on the floor, "Daddy?"
Stiles and Scott stared at the small blonde in disbelief, earlier's revelations finally hitting them.
Standing in the doorway, Luna looked like a mini Maeve, hair up in pigtails with Pom Pom ties, lilac dungarees, cute as a button. But noticing her father lying in pain, a familiar scowl settled on her face, a scowl only capable by a Hale.
Maeve noticed Stiles and Scott looking between the family, rolling her eyes, "What?"
"Sourwolf? Her dads Sourwolf!" Stiles questioned, the shock yet to stick.
"Sourwolf?" Maeve frowned, "What are you on about?"
"You and Derek?!" Stiles continued to babble, abandoning helping Scott get the bullet from the drain, "Derek."
"Who did you think was her dad, Stiles?" Maeve set Derek up against the table, whacking his shoulder to keep him awake "I don't think so, keep those eyes open, Derek Hale."
"Kieran," Stiles answered simply.
Maeve almost choked on her own spit,
whirling around in disbelief, "Kieran?!"
"Why is uncle Stiles staring?" Luna wondered across the room, gently hugging Derek, her father winced in pain but hugged her back.
"He's strange," Maeve answered, Stiles scoffed, rolling his eyes.
"Derek?" Maeve visibly paled as Derek fell back against the cold floor, going to his his side instantly, nervously shaking his arm "Derek? Derek!"
"Luna go wait outside," Maeve ordered crawling over to lift Dereks head up from the floor, Luna standing still in protest, arms crossed over her chest.
Trying not to show her fear, Luna shook her head, "No!"
"Luna," Maeve gazed back at her warningly, Luna looked down silently, "Stiles, will you?"
Stiles nodded, picking up Luna, carrying her out into the waiting room, setting her down on one of the chairs.
"Uncle Stiles?" Luna curled up in the chair, blue eyes gazing at the floor fearfully, "Is dad going to die?"
Stiles stumbled over her feet, crouching down of front of Luna, "No... No! Your Mom will kill him before he has the chance."
Luna smiled lightly, nodding her head.
"Right then, behave," Stiles grinned, running back into the other room.
"Scott, what the hell are we gonna do?" Stiles panicked, glancing back and forth between his best friend and Maeve trying to wake up Derek.
"I don't know! I can't reach it." Scott struggled, reaching further into the drain, "Come on."
Stiles noticed the worry on Maeve's face as she turned back to them, "He's not waking up! Use your claws and get the damn bullet already, Scott!"
For someone who hated her ex husband so much, Stiles seemed to think Maeve looked a little too upset.
Stiles knelt down beside Maeve, wincing at how deathly pale Derek was, "I think he's dying. I think he's dead!
"Shut up, Stiles," Maeve growled.
Stiles choked on his own breath at Maeves glowing eyes, "You? You're- werewolf- a, what? Oh my god!"
"Derek?" Maeve whispered, running a hand through his hair, ignoring Stiles.
Seeing Derek like this made Maeve fear loosing him, and she couldn't loose him again. Seeing Derek walk out of the door was hard, but deep down Maeve knew he would always come back , that he was safe, but on the brink of death, Maeve knew he wouldn't be able to come back this time.
"Just hold on! Come on. Oh! I got it! I got it!" Scott scrambled to his feet, running across the room to hand Maeve the bullet.
Maeve quickly took the bullet, standing up to unscrew the cap, "Someone wake him up."
"Please don't kill me for this," Stiles bit his lip, slamming his fist into Dereks face, pulling back in shock as he painfully cradled his first, "Ugh! Ow! God!"
Maeve couldn't say she didn't enjoy seeing Derek get punched in the face by Stiles of all people, but given the situation, that didn't bring the same excitement.
Stiles stumbled around the room, squealing in pain over his hand, Maeve rolled her eyes, grabbing Dereks uninjured arm, leaning him against the table.
"Give me -" Maeve handed Derek the power, reaching into his back pocket knowing he would have a lighter, not even thinking about their interaction.
Derek emptied the powder onto his arm, biting down on his lip as Maeve put the flame against his arm, burning the wolfsbane.
Derek tiredly dropped the bullet onto the table, sighing in relief, whilst Stiles was overwhelmed with excitement, "That - Was - Awesome! Yes!"
Maeve sighed in relief, the reality of what had just happened finally setting in. Derek was okay. That's all that mattered.
"Are you okay?" Scott asked, watching as the wound slowly began to heal up.
"Well, except for the agonizing pain," Derek grumbled.
"I'm guessing the ability to use sarcasm is a good sign of health," Stiles pointed out optimistically, the two Hales glaring back at him.
"Okay, we saved your life, which means you're gonna leave us alone. You got that? If you don't I'm gonna go back to Allison's dad and I'm gonna tell him everything," Scott proposed, Maeve and Derek looked to each other knowingly.
"You're gonna trust them? You think they can help you?" Derek asked, the disgust obvious in his voice.
Stiles stared at Maeve in confusion as she looked down at the floor with a frown, mirroring Luna's actions from earlier.
"Why not? They're a lot freaking nicer than you are!" Scott shouted angrily.
"Yeah, I can show you exactly how nice they are," Maeve turned to Derek in surprise at his words.
"Derek-" Maeve went to argue but Scott was already interested.
Maeve had gladly avoided any conversation or mention of the Argents or hunters in general, but now it all seemed to hit her at full force.
"What do you mean?" Scott questioned, looking between the exes "What do you two know that I don't?"
"I'll meet you there," Maeve sighed in defeat, picking up her bag before pulling Stiles out by his jacket "Come on."

"Werewolf?!" Stiles exclaimed once they were sat in the car, Luna peacefully fast asleep in the back seat after dropping off in the waiting room.
It wouldn't be till they got home this evening that they noticed Luna snook a kitten into her mothers bag whilst distracted by Dereks brush with death, pretending to sleep as her alibi, whilst currently wide awake.
Maeve hushed him, glaring at Stiles in annoyance as she started up the car, Stiles unable to keep his mouth shut, "This explains so much."
Stiles glanced back to where Luna snuggled into her car seat, a toy wolf tightly gripped in her hand, squeezing her eyes shut"Is Lu one aswell?"
"Yep," Maeve nodded, "I suppose this is where you start with the stupid questions."
Stiles held his hand over his chest, mocking offence, "Me? Stupid questions?"
"Ask away," Maeve raised a brow at the teen.
"Aren't wolves supposed to have lit-"
"Stop talking," Maeve interrupted, shaking her head in disappointment, knowing what he was going to ask, "Really? Don't you have more interesting things floating around that strange head of yours to ask other than comparing us to dogs?"
"What happened to you two?" Stiles hesitated, continuing "Was Derek always like that? So-"
"Angry?" Maeve suggested.
Stiles shrugged, leaning his head on the window, "Yeah, I guess."
"No, he wasn't," Maeve sighed, clutching the steering wheel, "As the for the both of us? We lost too many people we cared about, all that pain and grief, it changed us."
Stiles looked to her in amusement,
"So Derek was friendly once?"
"Yes, believe it or not," Maeve laughed under her breath, "I know he makes a bad impression for himself. But, he's more than what people believe him to be."
"He has to be if you had a kid with him? Right?" Stiles pointed out, Maeve smiled, nodding softly.
"Oh my god, does Jake know?" Stiles gasped suddenly, Maeve hit his shoulder as he raised his voice, shaking her head "He doesn't know?"
"No," Maeve breathed nervously, "And he isn't going to find out, either."
Luna blinked, thoughts flooding into her head at the mention of her mothers boyfriend she didn't particularly like, a devious smirk falling on her lips.
Silence fell on the car, but after a few seconds, Stiles was impatiently bobbing in his seat "No, Stiles, i'm not telling you anymore."
"But Maeve!"

"What are we doing here?"
Maeve walked into the room with Luna actually asleep in her arms, looking at Derek nervously as she stepped to stand beside Scott.
Seeing Peter in the burned state he was now was something Maeve had never gotten used to, every time she visited her breath got caught in her throat, memories of the fire consuming her.
Luna cuddled into Maeve's shoulder, her mother letting out a sigh, making her way over to check Peter had been cared for properly that day
Since Maeve returned to Beacon Hills, she'd taken over the role as Peters next of kin, making the sure the hospital was caring for him right, trying to get him back to who he used to be.
Scott stared at the man in the wheelchair facing the window in confusion, "Who is he?"
"My uncle, Peter Hale," Derek replied, watching as Maeve fussed about with some of the doctors notes on the board, rolling his eyes.
"Is he like you, a werewolf?" Scott sensed it, but couldn't be sure.
Derek blankly turned back to Scott, "He was. Now he's barely even human."
Maeve sensed Dereks discomfort of the event that ruined their lives, stepping forward to take over for him.
"Six years ago, after mine and Derek's wedding, I felt sick and left before Derek, he had to drop our friends back before coming home. Before Derek could even get home, the house was on fire. 14 people were trapped inside," Maeve explained, blinking back her tears as she thought of that day "Only four of us made it out."
"You were in the fire?" Scott blinked in disbelief, Maeve nodded slowly, trailing over the burn on her wrist "But what makes you so sure that they set the fire?"
Derek stepped forward, wrapping his hands around the handlebars of Peters wheelchair, "'Cause they're the only ones that knew about us other than the people we trust."
"Well, then they had a reason," Scott justified.
"Like what? You tell me what justifies this." Derek glared, spinning the wheelchair around, Peters haunting burns on full display, "They say they'll only kill an adult, and only with absolute proof. But there were people in my family, children, that were perfectly ordinary in that fire. Maeve was in that fire, she was pregnant, Scott. This is what they do. And it's what Allison will do."
Scott angrily looked between the exes before storming out of the room, Maeve took a deep breath, leaning against the door as she walked over to shut it.
"Have you seen them?" Derek questioned, Maeve opened her eyes, gazing back over at him.
"I saw Allison at the school," Maeve sighed, "Mom taught her the other day, going along with whatever lie Chris made up as to why we left."
Derek hesitated, but asked, "Are you okay?"
Maeve shook her head, nervously rambling, "I can't believe they're back. What the hells going to happen now? It's not like we can't hide ourselves from them forever."
Derek went to speak, but Maeve kept talking, growing more anxious by the second, "How can I protect Luna when I've got a target in my back? Don't you realise how bad this can go? This isn't about us anymore, it's about our daughter and we can't keep her safe if they're here and-"
"Maeve," Derek stated loudly, silencing his ex wife, "You and Luna aren't going to get hurt. I'm not going to let that happen."
"It's not me who's important anymore," Maeve mumbled in frustration, leaning her face in her hands, "We've barley escaped hunters as it is and now the worst of all are back."
Maeve took a deep breath, adjusting her jacket before turning on her heels like nothing had happened, "I have to go, I have dinner at Jakes - Call me if you find out anything else."
"Maeve?" Derek called after her, "Do you trust him? Jake?"
Maeve froze, a bitter scowl forming as she turned back around, "What does it matter? I trusted you, didn't I?"
"At least I never lied to you," Derek fought back.
"That's not fair," Maeve glared, quickly rushing around the room to put Peters paperwork back in the right places.
Derek shrugged, "Isn't it?"
"I know you don't like the situation that we're in but right now I really don't care," Maeve argued, slamming the doctors notes back into the cabinet, "Because the reason we're here is because we didn't work out, so I moved on. This is how it is now, and if you don't like it, walk away."
Maeve walked over to where Luna slept in the armchair, looking at Derek over her shoulder, "You haven't had a problem with that before."
"Come on, sweetheart," Maeve shook Lunas shoulder gently, picking up her bag before going to lift up the sleepy werewolf.
Luna yawned, blinking in confusion at the new surroundings, "Mommy?"
Derek picked Luna up before Maeve, his daughter hugging his side, falling back asleep. Maeve stared up at Derek, her breath uneasy as he stood so close to her, taking a step back.
"I'm not leaving."
Maeve stared at Derek with tears welled in her eyes, nodding before sharply turning to leave the room, Derek following after her. Luna sleepily looked over her fathers shoulders, blinking in surprise at the almost identical blue eyes staring right back at her.
