Maeve let out a gasp as she woke suddenly, the security alarm blasting through the loft. Derek's arm tightened around her as he sat up, quickly letting go of Maeve as he jumped out of bed, pulling on a t-shirt as he dashed downstairs.
Maeve in a much slower attempt of her husbands actions left their room, meeting Isaac and Dean in the hallway, Dean carried Luna in his arms, his niece fast asleep on his shoulder.
"What's going on?" Dean yawned.
"No idea," Maeve replied as they walked downstairs.
Finding Derek next door, they headed to the loft where the rest of the Hales were staying. The wall of windows dripped with paint, a large symbol displayed on it.
"What does it mean?" Cora asked.
Derek, Talia and Maeve shared a knowing look. They'd seen that symbol many times over the years, and it never meant anything good.
"It means they're coming... Tonight."
—
Maeve was leaving to visit her mom when the door opened, Derek's voice ringing out, "Go back to school."
Putting down her hairbrush, Maeve made her way downstairs, not surprised to find the three betas in the living room instead of being at school.
"Well, actually, we can't. Boyd, Dean and I are incredibly and unbelievably sick," Isaac argued, the trio entering the loft.
"With what, brain damage?" Derek joked, sharing an unamused look with his wife.
"Well, I have a migraine, Dean's depressed and, uh, Boyd here has explosive diarrhoea," Isaac lied.
Derek raised his brows, his brother shrugging, "Well I am."
Maeve sighed, their excuses were getting more and more ridiculous.
Boyd cringed at his pretend illness before speaking up, "We're here to protect you both."
"You're here to protect me? Well, I'm in trouble then," Derek commented.
Isaac sat down on Derek's desk, flicking through an open book, "Actually, Boyd here came up with a plan."
"Yeah, I thought about the time Gerard had me and Erica locked up, tied up with electrical wires pushing current through us. I was wondering how we could do something like that..." Boyd crouched down, unzipping a gym bag.
Boyd lifted the wires for them to see, "But on a bigger scale."
—
Boyd and Dean unlocked the water taps going into the loft, "In a pool of electrified water, it can take up to 50 milliamps to kill a normal human, less than the power it takes to turn on a light bulb."
"That's comforting," Derek shared an uneasy look with Maeve and Isaac, sat up on the steps away from the water.
"If we disable the circuit interrupter in the building's electrical room, the current will keep coming, and anyone who steps foot in here, they'll get a pretty shocking surprise," Boyd smirked.
Isaac pushed off one of the beams, sharing Boyds amused look, "Especially someone who's barefoot."
Derek looked away from the water, turning to Maeve sternly, "You and Lu can't be here tonight."
"Yeah, I don't feel like getting electrocuted," Maeve chuckled, kissing his cheek before leaving the loft, "bye!"
Luna laughed at Sammy's playful glare as they sprinted side by side across the school field, Suzie sat waiting to see who'd reach her the quickest.
Sammy normally spent his lunchtimes with his friends in his year group but after some of the other kids had been picking on Suzie, and consequently Luna, he'd stayed with the girls all breaktimes.
"This isn't fair, you're a werewolf!" Samuel protested with a wheeze, catching up with Luna who was sprinting easily.
Luna rolled her eyes, motioning over to their classmates playing as she shouted back, "Could you shout it any louder!"
Sam snorted, collapsing down beside Suzie "I so could've won."
"No you couldn't," Luna chuckled, sitting down on the grass.
Suzie smiled sympathetically, patting his shoulder, "That was embarrassing."
Sammy groaned, hiding his face in his jumper. Luna's laughter faded as she looked across the field, picking up on the scent of more werewolves than herself and those at the high school across the street.
Suzie frowned in concern, "What's wrong?"
Sammy quickly sat up, looking around protectively, "Lu?"
Luna stood up, looking down at her friends sternly, "Wait here."
Sammy stood up, looking back at Suzie, "Wait here."
Suzie let out a huff, rolling her eyes as she lay back in the grass, cursing herself for being the sensible friend.
The ten year old jogged after Luna as she stormed across the field to the gates of the high school. With her fathers impulsiveness, Luna wasn't just going to let whoever was looking for her lurk around scaring everyone else.
"What are you doing!" Sammy shouted after her.
Unlike his best friend, Sam would let the alphas sit outside for years for all he cared. He knew Luna was being an idiot for even attempting to approach them, but he'd learnt to just let Luna do what she wants unless he wants an argument.
"Go back inside," Luna called back, her eyes flickering to gold.
Sammy slowed down as they came across the two adults, reaching forward to grab her arm, "No."
"Go back inside, Samuel," Luna whirled around, staring at him pointedly, "Call my parents. No one else."
Luna tugged her arm away, walking to the three adults. Sam looked around in a panic before sprinting back over to Suzie, grabbing her hand as they rushed back inside.
Luna stared at the alphas suspiciously, "What do you want?"
"Very confident for such a little thing," Kali hummed, eyeing Luna.
Luna crossed her arms, "Well?"
"We need you to talk to your dad," Aiden spoke up, motioning for her to follow.
Luna stood still, "Don't you know how to use a phone?"
"He won't answer," Ethan pointed out calmly.
"Then he obviously doesn't want to talk to you," Luna rolled her eyes, turning to leave, "And I don't either."
Kali taught her arm, tugging Luna back. Luna stumbled, glaring at Kali as she tried to pull her and back.
"Now either come with us willingly or we'll have to hurt you," Kali threatened.
Luna scoffed as she hesitantly followed them away from the gates, "You won't hurt me."
"Do we need to feed her or something?" Aiden asked his twin quietly as they walked off the field, "To keep her alive?"
"I'm not a plant!"
Back inside, Samuel all but flew into Milo's classroom, knocking over piles of books and the odd chair as he stormed to the desk, Suzie hurrying in behind him.
Milo looked to his students in alarm, "What's wrong?"
"I need to call Luna's parents," Sam panted, leaning against the desk, "Now."
Milo squinted suspiciously, "Well firstly, I'm your teacher you don't make demands with me, Samuel. Secondly, you're not allowed to make personal calls, if it's an emergency go to reception."
Sammy groaned in frustration, "But it is an emergency! I need to talk to Maeve or Derek! Please Sir!"
"If I call Maeve will you calm down?" Milo reluctantly took his phone out of his pocket, scrolling for Maeve's contact, "This only happens once, don't go running around telling people I let you have a personal call."
—
Maeve and Archie hurried into the veterinary clinic, Noah sighed at the sight of his daughter. Archie had called her in a panic saying Alan was missing and they'd both rushed to the clinic.
"Maeve," Noah scolded, "you're on leave. You shouldn't be here."
"What happened to Alan?" Maeve questioned, ignoring her dad as she squeezed Archie's hand, "Dad?"
Scott sprinted through the door next, letting it slam on its hinges as he approached the group.
Scott looked to the trio, Noah's deputy leaving to look inside Alan's office with Archie.
"How'd you know?" Scott questioned.
"Stiles called me as soon as you left school," Noah told him with a sigh, "I'm sorry. Your bosses car is still here."
Scotts breathing grew uneven as he stumbled back, Maeve caught onto his arm, easing him down onto a chair. Archie let out a deep breath, leaning against the desk. His father had endangered himself many times with the supernatural, but he'd never gone missing.
"And the back door was wide open," Noah approached the wolves, "I need you both to tell me everything."
—
Stiles had joined them once they'd finished going over everything they knew, Maeve and Noah were left bickering over her involvement on the case.
"You're on mandatory leave, Diana," Noah scolded, "You're not working this case."
"It's just maternity leave," Maeve grumbled.
Noah rolled his eyes, "You're not supposed to be working, doctors orders, not maternity leave."
Maeve had a more optimistic view on her doctors orders to leave work to keep down her blood pressure, whilst Noah took the doctors words very seriously.
He cut Maeve off by walking over to the boys, patting Archie and Scott's shoulders, "All right, we're doing everything that we can. Right now, the best thing you can do is go back to school. Archie, I would appreciate it if you made sure Maeve got home."
Archie nodded, walking off to close up the clinic. Maeve eyed Scott and Stiles suspiciously as they walked into one of the cats rooms, hurrying after them.
"We have to tell him," Scott said sternly.
Stiles blinked, making room for Maeve, "You mean, like tell him tell him? Or tell him something else that isn't telling him what I think you want to tell him?"
"You know what I mean," Scott told him.
"You remember how your mom reacted? She didn't look you in the eye for, like, a week," Stiles reminded.
"And she got over it," Scott replied gently, "and it actually made us closer."
"I don't know, dude, I mean look at him," The trio gazed out of the window to where Noah was rubbing at his head tiredly, "Come on, he's completely overwhelmed as it is."
"He's overwhelmed because he has no clue what's happening," Scott argued, "Now Maeve's on leave she can't run around taking all the supernatural cases."
"I-" Maeve went to defend herself, "No, that's exactly what I do."
Noah had decided to wait until Stiles figured out that he knew about the supernatural, but Maeve knew Stiles would work himself out into a panic if she didn't tell him.
Maeve stepped in before the boys stared to argue, "Well it's fortunate that he already knows, isn't it?"
Maeve was sure she heard a bone in Stiles neck snap as he turned to her quickly, "What do you mean he already knows?"
"He married a hunter," Maeve reminded obviously, "He knew before any of us. You should be worrying about trying to explain why you didn't tell him all along."
Maeve smiled sheepishly at their bewildered faces, "Bye boys?"
Stiles stood frozen for a moment, his dad knew all this time. Stiles stared at his father, Noah smiled back innocently at his son. Letting out a scoff, Stiles followed after Maeve.
"Maeve!" Stiles grumbled, jogging after his sister as she left the building, "Maeve?"
Maeve went to reply but her phone rang, spotting Milo's contact she quickly answered it, "What do you want?"
"Maeve!"
Maeve frowned, "Sam, what's wrong?"
"Luna went with that lady with no shoes! And the spiky nails! I couldn't stop her!"
Maeve blinked slowly, dropping her phone as her chest constricted, a panicked breath following. They'd taken Luna. Stiles looked to her in alarm.
"Maeve? Maeve, what's wrong?"
—
"You're all dead."
Turns out kidnapping a Hale would not be as easy as they thought. Luna had been told all about the alpha pack, she wasn't scared, they took her because they needed her, not because they wanted to hurt her.
Not that Maeve and Derek would let them do that. So instead of retaliation, Luna decided to list all the people that would kill them for taking her.
"Uncle Peter will happily kill you, he's done it before," Luna hummed as they guided her into the lift, "Gran hates you, she'll kill you. Uncle Chris has loads of guns, so he'll kill you too. Nana will kill you for the thought of hurting me."
The twins stood in silence as the lift started up, slightly amused by the little girls threats. Kali was growing irritated.
"Mommy said she'll tear you apart limb by limb," Luna looked up at Kali innocently, "That's you dead."
Turning to Aiden, Luna smiled "Uncle Stiles will run you over with his jeep."
Finally glaring back up at Ethan, Luna started, "And my dad will tear out your throat, with his teeth."
The lift dinged before she could threaten them anymore, Kali took Luna's arm, tugging her over to the loft doors, drawing blood with her claws. Luna's confident glare faltered as her arm started to sing, biting her lip in pain.
In the loft Isaac nervously watched Derek walk into the water, "Derek? What do we do now?"
"We fight," Derek growled, eyes glowing as the doors slid open, Kali stepping out from behind them.
"Gonna be honest, Derek. When Ennis died, I thought to myself I'd just go for it. Find you and kill you, wherever you stood," Kali stated, walking down into the water, "Then I remembered how you surround yourself with these teenagers, hiding behind them, and I thought, 'what's a girl got to do to get you alone?'"
Dereks heart dropped as the twins carried, or dragged the way she was kicking her feet, Luna into the loft. Kali smirked as he stepped back in shock. Boyd and Isaac growling protectively, spotting the blood running down her arm. No amount of guilt could amount to how much Derek felt watching Luna's scared face.
"You and me, Derek, or they tear her apart. What do you say? You think you can beat me one on one?" Kali taunted.
Derek nodded his betas away whilst keeping a cautious eye on Luna, Boyd and Isaac moving to stand aside.
"I'm gonna rip your throat out. With my teeth," Derek threatened, Luna smiled smugly.
Kali and Derek growled, running at each other, Luna jumped, closing her eyes as they started to fight.
Luna wiggled as she tried to pull out of the twins hold, but they just lifted her higher. Luna pulled herself up on Aiden's shoulders, kicking Ethan in a delicate place.
Luna gasped as Kali swiped Derek in the stomach, her dad was loosing the fight. Derek fell down into the water as Kali pushed him down off the desk.
Isaac stepped closer towards Luna, waiting for the right moment to try and grab her from the twins.
Maeve rushed down the corridor as fast as she could, Peter charging ahead. Maeve had called him in a rant about killing an alpha bitch, naturally he had to be there to stop Maeve from hurting herself ( and he was slightly amused )
"Let her go!" The twins whirled whirled around at Maeve's shout, "Let her go or so help me god I will rip you to shreds!"
"Maeve-" Peter warned, stepping between her and the twins.
Maeve glare furiously at him, "Do not tell me to calm down."
Aiden and Ethan shared a look as Peter glowered at them, easily snatching Luna from their arms.
Pushing Luna behind him, Peter shoved the twins down into the loft, "Touch her again and i will kill you."
"Mom!" Luna gasped, running to hug Maeve.
"Lu," Maeve whispered, hugging Luna back tightly, "It's alright, you're safe."
Maeve looked up as she heard a bang, Kali leaped off the desk, kicking Derek across the room. Clutching Luna's had, Maeve turned the corner to see what was happening in the loft.
"Dad!" Luna cried in shock as Derek's body fell into the water.
At Luna's scream Isaac went to run towards her and Maeve, but Derek stopped him, "No!"
"Wait!" Isaac warned.
Derek pushed Kali away from Luna and Maeve, swiping at each other. Isaacs phone buzzed, A message from Stiles flashing up.
Now.
Isaac sprinted across the room, grabbing Luna out of Maeve's arms whilst Peter grabbed Maeve, pulling the both of them back against the hallway wall as electricity ran through the water.
Boyd fell down into the water first, Kali and Derek fell down together, Maeve's eyes blurred with tears as Derek's body shook in pain. Isaac turned Luna away from seeing the room. Peter gripped Maeve's hand to stop her moving forward.
Kali whirled around, shouting at the twins, "Take him!"
The twins sprinted down into the water, grabbing onto Derek and Boyd, dragging them into the centre of the room. Derek growled as they grabbed his hand, lifting his claws into the air. Kali smirked as she held up Boyd's body, slamming them down into Derek's claws. Boyd choked in pain as his body fell down into the water, Derek stayed frozen in shock.
"I'm giving you till the next full moon, Derek. Make the smart choice. Join the pack..." Kali threatened, the twins following her out, "Or next time I'm killing all of you."
Derek breathed heavily as he held onto Boyds wound, tearfully looking down at his beta.
"It's okay," Boyd told him shakily.
"No, no. No, it's not. It's not," Derek said in a whisper.
"It's all okay, Derek," Boyd repeated softly, his eyes
"I'm... i'm sorry," Derek cried silently.
"The full moon," Boyd whispered weakly, "That feeling. It was worth it."
Derek choked back a sob as Boyd continued, "Did you know it was a lunar eclipse? I always wondered what that felt like for one of us. For a werewolf."
Maeve pulled away from Isaac as Boyd's body fell further into the water, lifeless. Maeve's heart burned for Boyd, but getting Derek out of there took priority. She hurried over to Derek, gently helping him to his feet. Derek trembled as he stared down at the body of his beta.
Cora and Stiles hurried around the corner, Lydia not far behind. Cora cried as she sprinted down into the water, dropping to her knees beside Boyd. Though she hadn't known Boyd long, being locked away together brought on an strong bond between them. Stiles stayed back, lifting Luna from Isaacs arms, comforting his shaken niece.
Maeve shakily helped Derek through the water, walking him out onto the balcony so he could grieve away from the attention.
Derek fell back against the patio dining table, sliding down to the floor as tears rolled down his cheeks, Maeve sat down beside him, hugging him tightly. Loosing a friend was one thing, but loosing a beta was heartbreakingly painful.
Leaning her head on his shoulder, Maeve let out a sigh, "Don't you dare blame yourself, Derek Hale, this is not your fault."
—
"If I get in trouble for this, I'm blaming you," Maeve grumbled, swiping her keycard against the lock, stepping aside to let Chris and Allison into the cells, "don't even mention the amount of paperwork it took to even allow you in here."
Things had improved quite well with Chris and Allison, more so with Chris, but things were still a little awkward.
Pushing open the cell door, Chris was the first to step in, not bothering with greetings, "If you know something about him and you're reluctant to tell me, try remembering it's a long list of favours and penance before you're redeemed in my eyes."
"Which is a very little chance," Maeve agreed.
Gerard wiped away some blood leaking from his mouth, Maeve frowned in disgust. Maeve and her coworkers, including a team of scientists could not get to the bottom of a cure for his constant bleeding of black blood, not that he deserved one...
"You're going to tell us the story," Chris demanded, taking Maeve's arm as they stormed out, "And you're going to tell us the truth."
Allison took a deep breath before walking in, standing in front of the cell she asked, "Surprised to see me?"
"Only surprised it's taken so long," Gerard grumbled with a smirk.
"They were there for two days, waiting, hiding. That's what we're taught to do when the hunters find us... hide and heal," Cora looked up at the paint stained windows with a sigh.
"Okay, so is two days standard, then, or are we thinking Derek's on, like, some extended getaway?" Stiles wondered.
The anniversary of Paige's death was that weekend and like every year, Derek left to have some time alone, Maeve was aware of this and wasn't worried. He'd taken Dean with him this time along with Kieran deciding they couldn't go on a brothers trip without him, and Maeve just hoped they'd be able to deal with their grief together.
"Why do you care?" Cora asked defensively.
"The Derek I know wouldn't leave Maeve and Luna alone," Stiles pointed out, "Unless you lot are her bodyguards now."
"So why do I care? Let's see... because over the last few weeks, my best friend's tried to kill himself. His boss nearly got ritually sacrificed. A girl that I've known since I was three was ritually sacrificed. Boyd was killed by alphas. Now my sisters husband has gone MIA. I... do you want me to keep going? 'Cause I can, all right? For, like, an hour," Stiles ranted.
"You think Derek can do anything about that?" Cora asked, looking to Maeve apprehensively as she walked into the loft.
Maeve noticed her brother pacing around the loft and sat down tiredly, raising her brows at Peter sat up on the staircase. Luna was acting out since Derek wasn't there and refused to go to sleep, but one look from Lorraine and that argument ended.
"Well, since he's the one everyone seems to be after, it's more like he should do something about it, yeah," Stiles shrugged.
"I don't know. There's something different about him now. He wasn't like this when we knew him." Cora trailed off.
"Well?" Stiles interrupted, "What was he like?"
"A lot like Scott, actually," Peter answered, walking down the steps, "Both stupid enough to fall for hunters."
Maeve rolled her eyes, Peter never seemed to let go of her past with a hunter family, not that she was ever one.
"He was a lot like most teenagers. Unbearably romantic, profoundly narcissistic... tolerable really only to other teenagers," Peter continued, "Anything to add, Maeve? You do know him best."
Maeve ignored Peter's attempts at riling her up, glaring at him as Stiles whirled around to face her.
"What happened? What changed him?" Stiles questioned.
"Well, the same thing that changes a lot of young men. A girl," Peter answered.
"You're telling me some girl broke his little heart?" Stiles scoffed, "That's why Derek is the way he is? Hasn't Maeve broke his heart loads of times?"
Maeve blinked in disbelief, "Loads of times? I'm not some siren!"
Peter turned to Cora, "Do you remember Derek before he was an alpha had blue eyes? Do you know why some wolves have blue eyes?"
"Peter-" Maeve warned.
"I just always thought it was like a genetic thing," Stiles shrugged.
"If you want to know what changed Derek," Peter told them, "You need to know what changed the colour of his eyes."
"Do you remember how Derek was when he was a teenager?" Peter asked Cora.
Cora looked to her uncle in confusion, "You mean before he met Maeve?"
Peter nodded. Cora thought back on her early years, she had the odd childhood memory of Derek, but her most recent memories of when he was with Maeve, that was the Derek she remembered.
"Not really," Cora replied with a shrug.
"Peter-" Maeve warned, noticing his intrigued look, "Don't. Its not your story to tell. Derek wouldn't want it to be told."
Peter sat back against the desk, raising his brows at Maeve, "How about you explain it then?"
