Timothy's knuckles went white as they gripped the door handle.
Leukemia?
Skylar had died from hereditary leukemia.
Then he heard Mrs. Farrell's venomous voice: "That Skylar girl was bad luck. The second she dies, my husband gets the same disease. She's cursing our family from the grave."
"I'm finding an exorcist tomorrow. I want her spirit gone for good."
Katherine looked uncomfortable: "Mom, that's ridiculous. We need to focus on getting Dad proper treatment."
Timothy walked out of the café, every instinct screaming that something was very wrong here.
Back at the precinct, he started digging into what really happened five years ago.
Kevin pulled up the old surveillance footage, and Timothy watched as the nanny, Paola Madden, had indeed switched two babies twenty-six years ago.
But after reviewing hours of security cameras from nearby businesses, Timothy found footage showing Paola switching the babies back to their original families.
So how the fuck could Katherine's DNA match Mrs. Farrell's?
The only logical answer was that the DNA test was bullshit.
Timothy drove straight to find the doctor who'd run the test.
When Dr. Luke saw Timothy's badge, his eyes went shifty.
His voice was shaking: "Officer Goldstein... uh, what brings you here?"
Timothy cut straight to it: "Remember Skylar Madden? You did a paternity test for her about five years ago."
After thirty minutes of questioning, Timothy caught Dr. Luke in multiple lies.
First, the guy claimed he remembered Katherine's name specifically despite running hundreds of DNA tests.
When pressed, Dr. Luke stammered that he'd "had feelings" for Katherine.
But when Timothy asked for the original lab results, Dr. Luke couldn't produce jack shit.
Which meant the paternity test was never officially processed.
Under Timothy's intense questioning, Dr. Luke finally cracked:
"Look, Katherine's biological mother told her about the baby switch right before she died. When Skylar got her cancer diagnosis, she happened to be at the same hospital. That's when she found Mrs. Farrell and spilled everything."
"Mrs. Farrell came to me in tears, begging me to fake the DNA results in Katherine's favor."
"Katherine's life has been so fucking hard, man. I just wanted her to catch a break for once..."
"I know it was wrong, Officer. I know..."
The revelation hit Timothy like a sledgehammer. Rage and grief crashed over him in waves.
Skylar—beautiful, selfless Skylar—had spent her dying years drowning in guilt, thinking she'd stolen Katherine's rightful life. She'd carried that crushing weight for five fucking years.
Timothy stumbled backward, his voice raw: "Where's the real report?"
Dr. Luke clammed up.
Timothy's fist connected with the wall: "The goddamn report. Hand it over. Now."
Dr. Luke frantically tore through his desk drawers until he found the authentic DNA test results.
Timothy's cruiser idled outside the Farrell house, his hands strangling the steering wheel.
No matter how shitty your life was, truth was truth. You couldn't destroy an innocent person just because fate had screwed you over.
He knocked. Katherine opened the door with a surprised but genuine smile: "Timothy? What's wrong?"
Timothy brushed past her, walking straight to Mrs. Farrell on the living room couch.
He dropped the real DNA results in her lap like a bomb.
