Mrs. Farrell went completely still. She opened the report Timothy had given her and slowly read the bottom line:
**"Based on DNA analysis, results confirm Sharen Becker Farrell as the biological mother of Skylar Farrell."**
She shot up from the couch, the paper shaking violently in her hands.
"This is from five years ago? But the test back then clearly showed..."
Timothy's voice was ice-cold: "Five years ago, Katherine and Dr. Luke faked the results. He's already confessed. We have everything on record."
Katherine's face drained of all color.
Mrs. Farrell looked like she'd been hit by a truck, her eyes wide with horrifying realization.
Her voice shattered as she dropped to her knees, clutching the report: "Are you telling me... are you saying Skylar..."
She couldn't finish: "Skylar was my real daughter?"
Timothy felt completely hollow, tears burning his eyes.
He nodded.
Mrs. Farrell's breathing became ragged: "Oh my God... what have I done?"
Five years ago, when Skylar got diagnosed, she'd frozen all her accounts and shipped her off to Europe like some kind of criminal.
When Skylar was broke and dying and called begging for help, she'd screamed: "Skylar Madden, I don't give a fuck if you live or die. You should've died years ago like that whore who birthed you."
Even at the hospital, seeing Skylar reduced to skin and bones—her former princess wasted away to nothing—she'd felt a moment of pity.
But her rage had swallowed everything.
She'd said the most vicious things, told her to die anywhere but New York.
She hadn't even gone to say goodbye.
*That was my baby girl. I used to hold her all night when she had fevers.*
*She never knew a moment of pain until I... until I destroyed her.*
Katherine collapsed at Mrs. Farrell's feet, her face white as paper.
"Mom... Jesus Christ, I'm so sorry..."
She started slapping herself across the face: "I'm sorry. I just... I wanted a family so fucking bad."
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry..."
Katherine had no other words. Just sorry.
Her birth mother hadn't died of cancer—she'd thrown herself off the Brooklyn Bridge.
The night before, she'd downed a whole bottle of vodka and told Katherine through tears that maybe she should have actually switched her with the Farrell baby decades ago...
That's when the idea formed.
Someone who'd been living in hell her entire life—she'd been desperate to finally feel loved.
Mrs. Farrell stared at Katherine like she was seeing a monster.
Finally she screamed: "GET OUT! GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY HOUSE!"
She crumpled to the floor, sobbing: "My Skylar... my sweet girl..."
"What did she ever do to you? Why did you have to destroy her life? If you'd just told the truth, we would've taken care of you too!"
"You made us hate her while you stole everything that was hers. How could you sleep at night?"
"My baby was all alone... how did she survive what I put her through..."
Timothy looked down at Katherine with disgust: "Right up until she died, Skylar was still defending you. She kept saying you deserved the life she'd had, that all the suffering should've been hers."
"She felt guilty for what happened to you."
Katherine broke down completely, her whole body shaking with sobs.
