"Dante, no matter how wrong she is, she's still my sister. Please don't be so cruel to her."
"She must've done something so horrible because she was heartbroken. I don't blame her. I just think it's such a shame—now that Emma's gone, Celeste's our only hope."
Sophia looked like she'd made some life-changing decision.
"Let me go beg her. My sister's always been competitive, can't stand seeing me happy. If she takes out enough anger on me, maybe she'll cave. As Tyler's mother, as your partner—it's my duty. I have to do this!"
She slapped herself twice, hard. Tears instantly started flowing.
Dante's heart broke watching her.
"Who said you could hurt yourself like that? A piece of trash like Celeste Winters isn't worth you degrading yourself!"
"I've got ways to make her crawl to me."
He pulled out his phone and dialed the nursing home.
"Bring me Celeste's mother. Let's see just how tough that bitch really is."
I couldn't stop my anguished wails. A smile flickered in Sophia's eyes.
But facing Dante, she kept up her pitiful act:
"Mom Grace never liked me and my mom. Always called us homewreckers. She used to beat me as a kid, and now she's gone completely insane. Dante, I'm scared."
Dante's voice was impossibly gentle:
"Don't be scared. All that pain is behind you now. With me here, you'll never have to fear anything again."
I was going out of my mind up there. Mom was the only thing I still cared about in this world.
And this bastard wouldn't even spare her!
He seemed to have completely forgotten how good Mom was to him when we were kids.
When he fought with his family and ran away to our house, Mom patiently talked him through it, helped him work out his issues.
Later when he wanted to start his business and couldn't get family support, Mom gave him the startup money.
Even when his investments tanked and he was too scared to tell his family, Mom covered his losses.
When Mom got depression because of Sophia and her mother's harassment, he cried and promised he'd always have my back, help me get revenge for her.
But somewhere along the way, he became their fucking shield instead.
He pulled Sophia close, his eyes full of tenderness.
"Perfect chance to get payback for your childhood. If Celeste doesn't show, well—family law says the mother pays for the daughter's crimes."
I threw myself at him in a rage, but my spirit was too light to do any damage.
When I saw Mom again, she was slumped in her wheelchair with her eyes closed, barely alive.
Sophia dropped to her knees in front of her.
"Mrs. Cross, even if you hate me, the children are innocent. Just help me this once—tell me where Celeste is. Save Tyler, please."
She kept bowing her head to the ground. Mom coughed weakly.
Slowly lifting her eyelids, the moment she saw Sophia, Mom exploded with rage.
"You fucking whore! You destroyed my daughter, my granddaughter! I want you to pay with your life!"
Mom struggled to get up and attack her, but before her frail hands could even touch Sophia, Dante kicked her across the room.
His expression was ice-cold.
"I've been generous enough, paying for your nursing home all these years out of old loyalty. This is how you repay me? You're an elder, so I'll cut you some slack—just hand over Celeste, and I'll make sure you get a decent funeral."
Mom hit the floor hard, blood streaming from her mouth. I couldn't do anything but watch her suffer.
"Celeste? You heartless bastard, you still have the nerve to ask about her?!"
Mom looked up at Dante, a single tear rolling down her cloudy eyes.
My soul felt like it was being ripped apart.
"Of course I need to see her. Celeste's been bullying Sophia since we were kids. I'm giving her a chance to make things right—donate the bone marrow, and I'll let bygones be bygones."
"But if she keeps being stubborn, I won't go easy on her again."
Dante towered over my mother like some kind of king.
Sophia threw herself into his arms, sobbing.
"She doesn't need to make anything right. I'm the one begging her. I don't dare ask for anything else—just please save my Tyler."
Mom looked at the two of them and suddenly burst out laughing.
"What goes around comes around! Celeste, can you see this from heaven? Karma's a bitch, and evil people always get what's coming to them!"
Dante's brow furrowed.
"More crazy talk? I don't have all day. She's got three hours—if she doesn't show up to save you, I'll have to make you pay for her crimes."
Mom laughed hysterically, tears streaming down her face.
"My Celeste won't be coming back."
"Because she's already dead!"
