Dante barely glanced up, clearly not buying it.
"Keep lying. Let's see how long you can keep this bullshit up! You'll say anything to dodge this, won't you?"
"It's just bone marrow—not like it'll kill her. Last time she whined about Emma being too young and fragile, fine, I got that. But what's her excuse now?"
"Celeste's thirty fucking years old! The doctors made it crystal clear there'd be zero side effects. But she'd rather fake her own death than give up her precious marrow. Using you as a human shield too."
"Alright then, let's see just how heartless that bitch really is!"
He ordered his men to force Mom to her knees.
His assistant handed him a metal rod. He pulled out his phone and hit record.
"Celeste, get a good look. Your mother's getting punished because YOU ran away. This is all on YOU!"
The thick metal rod crashed down on Mom's back. Just one hit and she was coughing up blood.
Dante kept filming, his voice dripping with cruelty.
"For your own selfish ass, you'd sacrifice your own mother's life? That's cold as fuck."
The second blow knocked Mom's teeth right out of her mouth.
I floated beside him, begging and pleading for him to spare my mother.
But my spirit was too light, passing right through his body over and over.
When Dante saw I still wasn't responding to his messages, his eyes went even colder.
"Still won't cave after all this?!"
Mom looked at his growing impatience without a trace of fear.
"Even if you beat me to death, Celeste's not coming back."
"Actually, that'd be perfect. If I die, I can finally join my Celeste and Emma. I've been done with this life for a long time anyway!"
Dante's rage exploded and he raised the rod again, but Sophia threw herself in front of Mom, sobbing.
"Stop! Don't hurt Mrs. Cross anymore! I don't want her to suffer. I just want to save my Tyler—I won't drag innocent people into this."
Dante snorted, his knuckles cracking as he clenched his fists.
"Sophia, you're always too soft-hearted. That's why Celeste keeps walking all over you."
Sophia's tears looked so genuine.
"I can't stand watching her suffer. Yeah, she hurt me in the past, made my life hell, but I believe I can win them over with kindness. As long as they save my Tyler, I can forgive everything."
I was going insane with rage. That wasn't how it happened at all!
It was always Sophia and her mother who used Dad's favoritism to push me and Mom to the brink, over and over again!
Dante hesitated for a moment, then suddenly smiled like he'd figured something out.
"Celeste, you're using your mom as a shield because you think Sophia's too soft-hearted to really hurt her, right?"
He called over a doctor and pointed at Mom.
"Take her for compatibility testing. If her daughter's a match, she definitely will be too."
After the doctors dragged Mom away, he sent me another voice message:
"You won't donate? Fine, your mom will do it instead. Keep hiding and I'll livestream the whole thing for you."
They hauled Mom into surgery without even giving her anesthesia, doing the compatibility test on her raw.
Dante kept sending me video after video, but they all went nowhere.
Then Mom's test results came back.
His assistant came running in, panicked, clutching an old, outdated phone.
Dante was getting pissed.
"Why the hell are you bringing me this piece of junk?! Any word from Celeste or not?"
The assistant was so rattled by his yelling that his legs gave out and he dropped to his knees.
"Mr. Sterling... this... this is your wife's phone."
Dante froze, suddenly looking panicked.
"What do you mean? Why do you have her phone?!"
The assistant's voice got smaller and smaller.
"We found your wife's body, sir. In the cemetery on the outskirts of town. The autopsy results are in... both arms completely shattered, severe tearing in the... the lower regions..."
