I should've felt vindicated, but honestly? I just felt empty.
Had to be literally six feet under before anyone gave a shit about the truth.
And even then, Mom had to die just to clear my name.
Sophia finally quit the innocent act.
"Yeah, I fucking hated Celeste! Same dad, but she gets to be daddy's little princess while I'm the dirty secret. How's that fair?"
"My kid gets called a bastard because of her. Why should we have to live in shame?"
She was sobbing, crawling toward Dante on her knees.
"I'm not asking you to forgive me. Just save Tyler—he's still your boy!"
Dante's laugh was ice cold.
"My boy?"
He yanked a DNA test out of his desk.
"Funny thing—I ran this test again. Turns out Tyler's not mine at all!"
Sophia went completely limp.
I already knew the truth.
When Tyler needed that bone marrow, Dante came back as a zero match. That seemed weird as hell, so I got a paternity test done.
But right when I was about to spill everything to Dante, Sophia's people grabbed me.
I died with the secret still locked away.
The test results just sat there in my phone the whole time.
Sophia was completely fucked now. Dante was done with her bullshit and decided to go old school—Sterling family style.
Both women got the beating of their lives. Dante didn't even look back as he told his guys to dump them in some back alley.
He stood there watching them suffer, eyes bloodshot.
"Celeste, I know you hate my guts, but I'm still gonna make this right."
"These bitches are gonna hurt a thousand times worse than you did."
They tortured the mother-daughter duo for three solid days. When they were barely alive, Dante threw pepper spray in their faces to wake them up.
Then he cut off Tyler's medical care completely. Just stood there and watched the kid die, then tossed the body right at Sophia's feet.
"How's that feel? This little shit killed my Emma. Death's too good for him—I'm gonna scatter his ashes in a fucking sewer."
Dante brought in some witch doctor to destroy Tyler's soul for good. That finally broke Sophia—she just collapsed unconscious.
After all that, Dante went to Emma's grave.
"I'm so sorry, baby girl. Daddy got the bad people for you. You're not mad at Daddy anymore, right?"
I floated next to him and whispered:
"Emma's never gonna forgive you. When I helped her move on, I made damn sure she knew—don't you ever forgive this bastard."
He had me and Emma reburied together, then put it in his will that he wanted to join us when he croaked.
Fucking gross.
He flew in top doctors to help my mom, but she'd already checked out mentally. She died anyway.
He bawled like a baby, saying sorry a million times, like he suddenly remembered Mom used to give a shit about him.
Every time the guilt hit, he'd go beat the hell out of Sophia again.
Finally, Sophia snapped.
She marched into the police station and spilled everything. Told them about the illegal bone marrow thing with Emma, all of it.
She was completely off her rocker:
"You wanna destroy my life? Fine, asshole. I'm taking you down with me! Let's see who burns first!"
They slapped cuffs on Dante right away. When he saw Sophia at the station, he lost his shit trying to get at her, but the cops tackled him.
The evidence was bulletproof. He was totally screwed.
A rush of pure satisfaction hit me, like years of toxic rage finally lifting from my soul.
My spirit floated into the courtroom where Dante's high-priced lawyers were working overtime to save his ass, but he just sat there like a zombie, completely checked out.
In the end, he got slammed with ten years in state prison.
Sophia and her psycho mother both got life without parole.
Everything was finally wrapping up, and all my unfinished business was melting away.
My soul kept getting lighter and lighter. Then I saw my mom again.
She looked so at peace.
"Having you and Emma here with me—honey, this is heaven."
Yeah. No backstabbing, no bullshit, just family. For me, this was everything.
Later on, Dante kept trying to off himself in his cell but could never get the job done. Eventually the guy completely lost it.
All he'd do was rock back and forth, muttering:
"Celeste, I'm coming. Emma, Daddy's coming. We're gonna be together forever."
"We'll be the perfect family."
But nobody was listening. Nobody gave a shit.
And I sure as hell was never gonna forgive him.
Not in this life, not in the next, not ever.
