"Let go of me! Where are you taking me?!"
I fought against him desperately, terrified of going through last night's hell again.
Wyatt's voice was stone cold. "To the hospital."
The hospital? For what?
It wasn't until he shoved me into the car that it clicked.
He thought I was dirty!
He'd promised Leilani he'd "handle everything."
So now he was taking me to get "handled."
"I'm not going!"
I grabbed the door handle, trying to escape.
Wyatt yanked me back hard, his hand gripping my chin, eyes full of contempt.
"I shouldn't have lost control last night. You better pray you're clean."
I stared at this man I used to love and burst into hysterical laughter.
"Oh yeah, I'm totally diseased. Congrats, you're probably infected too. Just make sure you don't give poor Leilani the T-virus or whatever."
Wyatt dropped his hand like I'd burned him, pure disgust written all over his face.
"So that whole innocent girl thing was complete bullshit. I should've known better."
Yeah, well, I should've known better about him too.
I went completely numb as Wyatt dragged me through one humiliating exam after another.
Right before the results came back, I suddenly shoved him away and walked out without looking back.
"Sadie! Get your ass back here!"
He started after me, but when the results came out, he immediately turned to grab the report instead.
I found a hotel and completely crashed. My body and mind were done, so I slept for like thirty-six hours straight, dreaming about everything we used to have.
How Wyatt saved me from those creeps when we first met.
How he taught me to survive all the backstabbing and fake smiles in high society.
How he took a beating from my dad when we went public, just holding me tight through every hit.
All of it disappeared the second I opened my eyes.
Wyatt didn't even bother calling until the next evening.
"Where are you? Why haven't you come home?"
I snorted. "What's wrong, uncleWyatt? Scared something happened to me and you'll have to explain it to daddy?"
On the other end of the line, I could tell Wyatt was pissed.
He absolutely hated when I called him "uncle."
That word reminded him of his age, reminded him how inappropriate we were together.
Hearing the sarcasm dripping from my voice, Wyatt started making excuses. "Look, I didn't tell Leilani who you really are because I didn't want her to feel uncomfortable about staying here. She's pregnant and alone—she needs someone to take care of her."
"Then you go take GOOD care of her."
When I didn't fight him on it, Wyatt's tone softened a bit.
"The test results came back—we're both clean. I had you investigated too. You go straight from work to home every day, no time to fool around. I was wrong about you."
"And?"
Like saying he was "wrong" could just erase all the damage he'd done to me?
Wyatt's voice turned cold. "Sadie, I already apologized. Don't be such a brat about it."
I let out a cold laugh. "Where exactly did you apologize? I must've missed that part."
Wyatt went quiet.
That was so typical of him. He never actually said "I'm sorry"—those words just didn't exist in his vocabulary.
He thought at his age, he shouldn't have to apologize to some "kid" like me. In his mind, just calling and offering me a way back was his version of an apology.
God, I used to be so pathetic—I knew he had this massive ego, so whenever he threw me a bone, I'd come running like a grateful puppy.
Well, fuck his precious ego. I don't give a damn anymore.
Suddenly, I heard Leilani's voice in the background.
“She’s not coming back? Seriously? Girls these days are so dramatic. Say a couple harsh words, and she storms off all night?”
“Bitch like that? Any guy who marries her is asking for trouble.”
I made sure to speak loud and clear into the phone. "Don't worry, I'll be home real soon—uncle and aunt!"
Then I hung up, cutting off Leilani's outraged shrieking.
I was going back to grab my stuff and never look back.
