"Thank you, Mrs. Whitmore." Clara smiled and nodded at Margaret, then turned to Cassian and extended her hand. "Cassian, just call me Clara."
Clara naturally understood the purpose of this dinner. The Stanford and Whitmore families were well-matched, and both families happened to be discussing business partnerships lately—
This dinner, besides strengthening family ties, also had matchmaking intentions.
Clara knew there were two women around Cassian, but she didn't care.
After all, one of them had abandoned him during his lowest point. He might still have some lingering feelings due to the resentment of being left behind, but who could truly hold no grudge against someone who'd abandoned them?
The other was just some country girl with no background. If it weren't for the Whitmore family's sponsorship, she never would have crossed paths with Cassian.
Even if she'd gained some favor by caring for him after his accident, she still wasn't a real threat.
After all, in Cassian's heart, she couldn't even compare to Juliette.
Cassian quickly understood his mother's intentions. His face darkened as he looked at Clara's outstretched hand, but he didn't respond.
As the atmosphere grew tense, Margaret smiled and smoothed things over, pulling Clara back to her seat. "Cassian's always been like this since he was little. Don't take it personally—once you get to know each other, it'll be fine."
Clara's expression stiffened slightly, but she said nothing.
Men of privilege always had their moods, especially after what he'd been through.
Margaret had hoped they could get acquainted and take things slowly, but she hadn't expected Cassian to be so uncooperative. When Clara initiated conversation, he wouldn't respond. When Margaret tried to bridge the gap, he'd deflect with irrelevant comments, being thoroughly dismissive.
Throughout the entire meal, Cassian acted as if Clara didn't exist. While she could tolerate it at first, even the best temperament has its limits. She suddenly stood and headed for the door.
"Mrs. Whitmore, I can see Mr. Whitmore has no interest in continuing this conversation. Let's just forget about this whole thing."
The dinner ended unpleasantly. Margaret walked Clara out of the estate with some embarrassment, then returned to glare at Cassian with annoyance.
"What was that about? I asked you to come home for dinner, and you turned it into this mess."
Even after Clara left, Cassian never once looked up, just continued eating his food. Hearing his mother's complaint, he replied indifferently: "When you called me back, you didn't mention there'd be a setup involved."
"The families are doing business together. I just thought it would be nice to make friends," Margaret said reproachfully. Seeing his complete indifference, she could only sigh. "Fine, since you don't like this one, I'll look for someone else."
As soon as she finished speaking, Cassian put down his chopsticks. "Don't waste your time. I won't go."
"Cassian, it's not that I'm trying to rush you, but you have to get married eventually..." Margaret sighed. "I know you still can't let go of that Juliette woman, but Cassian, don't forget—when you had your accident, she was the first one to cut ties with you!"
Hearing Margaret mention Juliette, he should have defended her, but when he spoke, it came out as something entirely different: "What about Mara? Didn't you always want her as a daughter-in-law?"
Hearing Mara's name again, Margaret paused for a moment, her response almost automatic: "Mara? Didn't she already go abroad?"
