"Abroad?!"
Cassian's face changed dramatically. He shot to his feet and stared at Margaret. "What the hell do you mean by that?"
Perhaps not expecting such an intense reaction, Margaret's eyes immediately became evasive, and she started stammering: "What... what do you mean? You must have misheard!"
She turned and hurriedly tried to leave, but Cassian was faster, blocking her path in an instant.
He blocked her way completely, and though he said nothing, his imposing presence made it clear he wouldn't budge.
Margaret had the distinct feeling that if she didn't explain, he'd stand there facing off with her indefinitely.
Suddenly, irritation flared in her chest. It was just Mara—why was he pressuring his own mother like this?
"Fine, yes, she went abroad. So what?"
Seeing his mother's attitude and remembering her strange behavior today, Cassian immediately understood what had happened.
"Where did you send her?" His face was ugly, his voice carrying a threatening edge.
At his words, Margaret's expression soured as well. She walked over to the dining table and sat down with an air of nonchalance, glancing at him sideways. Seeing his dark expression, she smiled coldly: "Cassian, don't make it sound so ugly. What do you mean 'where did I send her'?"
"She's a grown woman—what could I possibly do to her? She's just some poor girl with no background. If our family hadn't sponsored her education, who knows where she'd be today. Now she's not only finished school but has a chance to go abroad. She should be grateful."
"Thankfully, she was smart about it and agreed readily enough..."
Cassian had never imagined this was how it really happened.
He'd suspected his mother might have intervened to make her leave, but he hadn't thought Mara had left willingly.
"Impossible!" His face went ashen, his voice trembling.
Seeing her son's devastated state, Margaret's voice softened as she tried to comfort him: "Cassian, if they can leave you so easily, it just means you're not meant to be. You're the sole heir to Whitmore Group—there are plenty of women who'd want to marry you. Why keep obsessing over those two?"
After leaving the family estate, Cassian went straight to the biggest club in New York City.
In a private room, Cassian drank one glass after another, empty bottles already covering the table in front of him. He'd had so much that his consciousness was starting to blur.
Marcus watched him with concern, hesitating for a long time before finally speaking up: "Dude, maybe slow down. The doctor said you can't drink like this..."
The others chimed in with their own attempts at persuasion, but none of them dared mention Mara's name.
Despite their constant urging, Cassian showed no reaction, just kept downing glass after glass, completely deaf to their words.
Marcus had no choice but to grab his phone and make a call.
Juliette was surprised to receive the call, especially since she could feel the disapproval from Marcus's group ever since she'd returned to the country.
She knew exactly where their disapproval came from, but she'd never cared about that.
As long as Cassian didn't care about those petty details, what did other people matter to her?
After waiting a moment and seeing the caller hadn't hung up, she finally answered: "What's wrong? Is something the matter?"
"Cassian's wasted. Come talk some sense into him."
Hearing it involved Cassian, Juliette didn't delay and rushed over immediately. When she arrived at the private room, he was already dead drunk.
Seeing the table covered with empty bottles, even she was startled and instinctively asked: "What happened? How did he drink this much?"
