She wiped away tears and ran off. Cassian instinctively wanted to call her back, but stopped his outstretched hand mid-motion.
What was he doing?
Watching Juliette's figure disappear, he pressed his lips together and ultimately said nothing.
Fine. Let it be. He needed to figure out what he really wanted anyway.
Three years later.
New York City Airport.
A plane left white contrails across the sky before circling to land. In the crowded, noisy terminal, Mara wore a light shirt dress that made her stand out among the bundled-up crowd around her.
She dragged her heavy suitcase through the flow of people exiting the airport, muttering under her breath: "Can't believe NYC is this cold in summer. Gotta find somewhere to change clothes fast..."
The man beside her couldn't help but chuckle at her words, taking off his jacket to drape over her shoulders: "I told you it was unusually cold this year, but you wouldn't listen. Serves you right."
The jacket, carrying his body warmth, enveloped her completely. She opened her mouth to say something, but ultimately fell silent.
When someone does you a favor, you owe them. She'd put up with him for now.
Dr. Noah Hartwell smoothly took the suitcase from her hands and headed outside. After a few steps, Mara suddenly stopped.
"I need to use the restroom. Wait for me."
With that, she turned and walked away.
When she came back out, Mara noticed there was an additional person outside. He wore a black trench coat and leaned against the wall, as if waiting for someone.
She didn't think much of it, just glanced casually before preparing to leave, but the moment she moved, he suddenly turned.
He turned around, revealing a face she knew all too well.
It was Cassian.
"I knew it was you." Cassian looked at Mara, his eyes holding emotions she couldn't decipher. He didn't approach, just firmly blocked her path so she couldn't leave directly.
After a long silence, he spoke again: "I saw someone rushing by earlier who looked familiar, so I came to check. How... how have you been these years?"
Mara didn't really understand why he was blocking her path, but hearing his question, she hesitated before nodding.
"Pretty good."
On this point, Mara wasn't lying.
When she'd gone to the UK alone years ago, she knew no one and had little money. The beginning had indeed been difficult.
But fortunately, she'd met Noah.
He was her landlord, and later became her confidant and boyfriend.
It was quite a coincidence—when she was struggling with work and housing, Noah had appeared just like that.
He was also American, having emigrated to the UK with his father years earlier. After several years of hard work, he'd established his own clinic.
Mara had only wanted to rent temporarily, repeatedly assuring him she'd move out as soon as she found work. But after a few days, when they happened to chat about their homeland, they discovered they were from the same place.
In fact, he was actually her senior, three years ahead of her, but Noah had emigrated with his father while Mara had voluntarily given up her studies to care for Cassian.
Otherwise, they might have known each other back home.
But fate worked in mysterious ways—they'd missed their first meeting, only to encounter each other again in the UK. He'd extended a helping hand during her most difficult time, giving her a place to stay.
Later, Mara became the psychologist at that clinic.
Thanks to Noah's influence, she had considerable authority and freedom at the clinic. When she lacked confidence due to being out of touch with society from caring for Cassian, he encouraged her step by step to take that brave first step.
Later, they got to know each other, understood each other, and fell in love.
