Before heading back to pack, I made a stop at my parents' house.
The moment I walked through the door, both of them froze. Dad slowly took off his reading glasses while Mom set down her knitting, and they stared at me like they couldn't believe what they were seeing.
That's when I noticed Dad was limping.
Ever since I'd gotten together with Wyatt, my relationship with my family had completely fallen apart.
The day I left home, I'd bowed deeply to Dad's strong, upright figure.
I never imagined that when I saw him again, he'd be so much thinner, walking with a limp.
I dropped to my knees in front of them, grabbing Dad's hands as tears streamed down my face. My voice was shaking.
"Mom, Dad, what happened? What's wrong with your leg?"
They all said it was just a small accident.
But I had this gut feeling it was connected to Wyatt.
The guilt was crushing me.
I collapsed on the floor, tears soaking my clenched fists, nails digging deep into my palms.
My parents pulled me into their arms without saying a word, just gently patting my back.
They were happy at first—but that didn’t last long. The moment they saw how broken I was, the relief turned into pure heartbreak.
I went back to Wyatt's place, and the second I walked in, he pulled me into his arms.
He smelled my hair. "Baby, that hotel shampoo smells awful. Don't you ever run off like that again."
I caught the scent in his hair too. It wasn’t the shampoo I bought. It’s only been a day, and he already smells like someone else.
Disgusting.
I pushed him away and looked straight into his eyes.
"Tell me the truth—did you have something to do with my dad's leg?"
Wyatt’s eyes shifted a little, like he was digging through his memory. Took him a while to remember—guess it was just a minor detail to him.
“Oh, that? Just a misunderstanding. One of my guys heard I got jumped and tried to get even. Things got a little out of hand."
"That was ages ago anyway, just let it go. Besides, it's only his leg—he's fine otherwise!"
He gave me this casual smile that made my blood run cold.
Then Wyatt changed the subject. "You hungry? Want me to make you some ramen?"
I dodged his outstretched hand and looked him dead in the eye.
"Wyatt, I want to break up."
Right then, Leilani's voice shrieked from upstairs.
"Wyatt! Where are you? My leg's cramping again!"
Wyatt's face went into panic mode as he grabbed my arm, dragging me toward the stairs.
"Look, we'll deal with this later, okay? Just go rub her leg now—listen to her screaming up there, she's gotta be dying."
I yanked my arm away, furious. "Why the hell should I do it? You want her massaged, you do it yourself."
Wyatt knew how to massage.
Back when I was working crazy hours on projects, standing all day until my feet killed, he'd learned massage techniques just to help me.
That's what made me decide to bring him home to meet my parents.
Turns out I'd brought home a monster.
"Come on, I'm just trying not to make you jealous."
Wyatt put on this whole act like he was being so considerate.
Conveniently forgetting how two days ago he was holding Leilani tight and wouldn't let go.
"I'm not jealous."
From now on, he could hold her, kiss her, whatever—none of my business.
"Well, you said it."
Wyatt rolled up his sleeves like he'd been waiting for those exact words.
He pushed open the bedroom door and walked right in.
He positioned Leilani's leg on his knee with practiced ease, warmed up his hands, and started massaging her.
The pain on Leilani's face melted away.
"Oh Wyatt, thank God you're here. You're still so good at this."
I was about to leave when I stopped dead in my tracks.
Turns out, the massage he “learned just for me” was bullshit.
Whatever. Didn't matter anymore.
I was done with him anyway.
