Mara still left, without hesitation, exactly as everyone had expected.
Even Marcus and the others couldn't help but feel relieved when she left.
They could all imagine that if Mara had really been forced to stay, perhaps every day going forward would be like today - compelled to accept Cassian's affection but never finding true happiness.
Perhaps this was what truly having fate but no destiny meant. They had both loved each other, but unfortunately had never been in sync.
When she loved him most, his heart and eyes were filled only with his own pride, even preferring to focus all his attention on someone who had once abandoned him rather than spare any for the person beside him who truly deserved his care.
But after Mara left, he regretted it and wanted to win her back. However, no one in this world waits forever for anyone.
A week later, the wedding proceeded as scheduled.
Mara hadn't invited her parents, so all the roles that should have been filled by her father were taken by Noah's father instead.
She walked arm-in-arm with Noah's father, her voluminous dress train trailing behind her, looking from afar like a true princess.
Though it was the Hartwell family taking a bride, Noah's father truly felt the melancholy of giving away a daughter as he walked down the aisle. He wiped away tears and warned Noah: "You brat, if you ever dare mistreat Mara, I'll never forgive you!"
The happiness in Noah's eyes was almost overflowing. He took Mara's hand from his father, as if making a promise to him and a vow to her:
"I will definitely protect Mara, never let her be hurt again, and love her for the rest of my life."
The overly direct declaration of love made her ears turn bright red. She smiled softly, her eyes full of love: "I believe you."
The officiant continued with the ceremony, his smile completely unguarded: "Mr. Hartwell, do you take Miss Collins as your wife, through poverty and wealth, sickness and health, never to part, with unchanging devotion?"
"I do."
"Miss Collins, do you take Mr. Hartwell as your husband, through poverty and wealth, sickness and health, never to part, with unchanging devotion?"
Mara turned back, quietly squeezing the hand that held hers, her lips blooming into a radiant smile: "I do."
As applause erupted, Mara and Noah exchanged rings. The officiant continued: "Now, may the bride and groom kiss!"
This was actually the first time Mara had made such an intimate gesture in front of so many people. She watched as Noah lifted her veil and drew closer and closer.
Their heated breaths mingled, intimate and tender.
"Silly girl, close your eyes."
With a soft laugh, she blushed and closed her eyes. The next moment, a soft and gentle touch spread from her lips.
Below the stage, Cassian watched this scene feeling his heart being torn apart, as if ten thousand needles were constantly piercing his chest. Yet he didn't even have the right to cry out in pain.
Because this was all his own doing - it was his arrogance and conceit that had made him miss the person he should have treasured most.
Amid all the cheering, he alone left dejectedly.
Inside the banquet hall, guests gathered in celebration. Outside, Cassian faced alone the police officers who had come with an arrest warrant.
"NYC Police Department. Mr. Whitmore, it's been proven that you're suspected of unlawful detention. We're now executing a legal summons. Please cooperate."
Cassian was silent for a moment, then looked back toward the banquet hall.
They'd certainly picked a good day.
He nodded, offering no resistance, and obediently got into the police car with them.
Mara saw Cassian again three months later.
The couple had finished their honeymoon and stayed at the Hartwell family estate to spend time with Grandpa and Grandma Hartwell for quite a while. Only when the clinic in the UK could no longer be delayed did they finally set out on their return journey.
But as soon as they arrived at the airport, Mara spotted an unexpected figure.
He was casually sitting on the steps outside the airport terminal, with several stray cats gathered around him, meowing as they begged for the food in his hands.
He was absentmindedly petting the cats when he looked up and met Mara's eyes.
Picking up one of the cats, he slowly walked over to her: "This time when you leave, you're not coming back?"
She nodded in response. He lowered his head with a bitter smile.
"Then goodbye. Have a safe journey."
Cassian watched their figures gradually disappear into the crowd. They wouldn't be coming back, and he couldn't leave the country.
This goodbye was truly a final farewell.
