Wyatt snapped, "I'm busy!" and hung up immediately.
Because of Sadie, he'd always had issues with his nephew. That whole childhood friends thing really got under his skin.
Sure, Sadie swore they were just friends.
But he hadn't forgotten how that little shit had the nerve to throw a punch at his own uncle when their relationship went public.
No way was he letting that slide—he made sure his brother locked the kid up, then talked him into shipping the brat off to Europe for "going after his uncle‘s wife."
Thinking about it now, he remembered how Sadie wouldn't even look at him when he left.
She took a tumble down those stairs too. Maybe she got hurt.
Wyatt was about to call her when the delivery room doors burst open.
They wheeled out Leilani and the baby.
"It's a boy! Healthy baby boy!"
Wyatt quickly shoved his phone back in his pocket and took Leilani's hand.
"You were incredible, sweetheart."
Leilani looked wiped out but smiled up at him.
"Wyatt, look at our little boy."
Wyatt carefully picked up the baby, but his smile died on his face.
Leilani caught the change. "What is it? Something wrong?"
He shook his head quickly. "Nah, nothing." He poked the baby's cheek and forced a grin. "Hey there, handsome little guy."
But staring at this face that looked absolutely nothing like him, he felt way less excited than he thought he would.
After getting Leilani and the baby all set up, Wyatt checked his phone again.
Nothing from Sadie. No calls, no texts.
Even though he'd slapped her, the old Sadie never would've gone radio silent this long.
Thinking about how weird she'd been acting lately—more attitude, no respect, even running away from home.
This time, he'd throw her another bone. He was older, so he had to be the mature one.
He shot off a text:
[Get yourself to the hospital and get checked out. Then come to apologize to Leilani.]
Satisfied, he put the phone away.
"Wyatt, the baby's crying," Leilani called out.
His jaw clenched for half a second before he smiled. "Coming."
That evening, his mom basically dragged him to the family dinner.
One look at Waylon and that familiar annoyance kicked in.
The kid was in a basic white tee and black shorts, hair all perfectly messy—like he just walked out of some damn magazine shoot.
The white shirt showed off his solid chest, and his calves had these perfect muscle lines.
Wyatt unconsciously touched his own beer gut.
Whatever. I just haven't hit the gym in a while.
Big deal, so he's young. So he's built like a Greek god.
Sadie picked me. All that pretty boy crap means nothing.
The whole dinner, Waylon kept texting someone, grinning at his phone like a lovesick puppy.
Wyatt cleared his throat, pulling the whole elder card.
"So who's got you so glued to that thing? You look pretty smitten."
"New girlfriend?"
