Waylon looked up at him and smiled with a raised eyebrow. "Yeah."
Wyatt blinked. Shit, the kid actually had a girlfriend now.
He should've felt relieved—no more competition for Sadie. But this weird uneasiness settled in his chest instead.
The other relatives started congratulating Waylon, then turned to Wyatt.
"Wait, don't you have a girl too? Where is she tonight?"
That's when it hit Wyatt—Sadie still hadn't texted him back.
He made up some excuse. "Sadie's not feeling well. She's resting at home."
"You two have been together for a while now. When's the wedding?"
Wyatt shot a glance at Waylon, puffing out his chest like he'd already won.
"We're working on it."
Unfortunately, Waylon didn't look heartbroken like he'd hoped. Instead, the kid gave him this mocking smile, like he was watching some pathetic joke unfold.
That pissed Wyatt off. He finished his drink and bailed early.
Walking past a jewelry store, he stopped, hesitated, then went in and came out twenty minutes later with a gift bag, whistling like he owned the world.
When he got home, the house was pitch black and dead silent.
Wyatt's face went rigid.
He searched every room—no Sadie. Called her phone—straight to voicemail.
Great! Another one of her little disappearing acts!
He wasn't gonna go chasing after her this time!
The anger mixed with the alcohol hit him hard, and he crashed face-first into bed.
The next morning, Wyatt saw the gift bag he'd thrown on the floor in his rage and decided to be the bigger person. Again.
He sent her a text:
[Baby, I miss you. I'm waiting for you~Please come home ASAP.]
Then he called in some professionals to decorate the house.
He put on his best tailored suit and styled his hair to look mature but still handsome.
He opened the box from the gift bag—inside was this massive, sparkling diamond ring.
Maybe it was sudden, but seeing Waylon again had made him nervous.
Tonight, he was gonna propose to Sadie and lock her down for good.
Wyatt stood by the door, waiting for her to come back.
His phone rang.
Without even looking, he picked up. "Baby..."
But it was Leilani's voice on the other end.
"Wyatt, why didn't you come by today? The baby misses you. My incision's been killing me all day..."
If this had been before, he would've dropped everything and rushed to her side. But now? He was getting annoyed.
Wyatt brushed her off with some work excuse.
Then another call came in.
His mom.
"Waylon's flying back today. We didn't pick him up when he arrived, so maybe you could drive him to the airport? I don't know why he only stayed two days this time."
Same response: "I'm busy."
He couldn't wait for Waylon to leave. Next time the kid came back, it'd be for his and Sadie's wedding.
But he waited from morning till night, and Sadie never showed.
This growing dread wrapped around his heart like a noose.
Wyatt suddenly bolted to the bedroom, yanked open the closet, pulled out every drawer.
Gone.
All of Sadie's stuff was gone.
This time, she'd gone too far.
His face dark with fury, he furiously typed out a message:
[You have 30 minutes to get your ass home or we're done.]
That was a line they'd never crossed before.
He was sure she'd be scared.
But just as he was feeling confident, her words from that day echoed in his head:
[Wyatt, I want to break up.]
Wyatt's face went ghost white. His phone slipped from his hands and crashed to the floor.
Right then, a plane roared overhead outside his window.
He'd lost her.
