"I... I didn't know... I had no idea it would be like that..."
"If I'd known they would do that to you, I would have..."
"There are no ifs." I cut him off sharply.
"It already happened."
"Wyatt—oh wait, I mean uncle... Enjoy your vacation here. My husband and I have stuff to do, so you'll have to sightsee on your own."
With that, I took Waylon's arm and walked into our house.
Outside, Wyatt was still shouting, "Sadie! I'm gonna make this right, I swear!"
The moment we got inside, Waylon pulled me into his arms. I could feel him trembling.
"Sadie, why didn't you tell me about this? I want to fucking kill those bastards."
He only knew that Wyatt had broken my heart—he didn't know the specifics, and I'd never brought it up.
"Murder's a felony, you know. You really want me to be a widow right after our honeymoon?" I joked.
"Sadie!"
Waylon's eyes were getting red.
I smiled. "At first I didn't want to talk about it. Later, I didn't need to."
"Way, other than death, everything else in life is just temporary pain. I've healed from all that, and you're the best medicine I could ever ask for."
Waylon's lips were shaking so hard he couldn't speak. He just held me tighter, like he wanted to merge me into his very bones.
Wyatt's idea of "making it right" was flying back home to settle the score with his buddies.
Things got heated, and he beat one of them so badly the guy ended up in the hospital.
Then the cops dragged Wyatt away.
Later, the Marchand family had to pay a huge settlement to get the injured guy to drop the charges.
The first thing Wyatt did after getting out was drag Leilani to the courthouse for a divorce. No matter how much she begged, he wouldn't budge.
Turns out when he was beating up his friends, he learned that it was Leilani who'd egged them on to use those sick tactics against me.
After her husband died, the first person Leilani contacted wasn't Wyatt—it was one of his buddies.
The night Wyatt threw me to his friends, Leilani was there too.
She was the one who told them to drug me and torture me, while she ran off to Wyatt to play the victim and worm her way back into his house.
Before, Wyatt felt guilty about divorcing her and was planning to give her a huge settlement so she could take care of the kid.
Now? He felt zero guilt. In fact, he hated her—hated how she'd destroyed what we had.
Leilani refused to sign the papers. They got into a screaming match outside the courthouse, and she ended up fainting.
At the hospital, they found out she was two months pregnant.
Wyatt couldn't believe that less-than-one-percent chance had happened to him. He flat-out refused to acknowledge the kid was his and demanded she get an abortion.
Even when Leilani started cutting herself to manipulate him, he didn't change his mind.
Driven by rage and desperation, Leilani lost it completely and stabbed Wyatt with a pair of scissors.
Leilani got arrested.
And Wyatt? Lucky son of a bitch—the blade didn't hit anything critical. He spent a month in the hospital and walked out fine.
The minute he got discharged, he jumped on a plane and showed up at my door.
