"I need you to read through his contract and try like hell to find any loopholes that could possibly get him out. I expect a full report when I get back or this office becomes your home for a week."
"Yes, Mrs. McDermott," replied my legal assistant, Kelsey. "We'll try our best to have everything prepared for court when you come back from vacation."
"Thank you, Kelsey. If you have any questions, my assistant Jared is on call. I will be available through email if necessary."
"Will do. Enjoy your trip," she smiled as I gathered my things.
I headed to the parking garage and got in the car as a call came through.
"I'm leaving the office now, Bria," I answered.
"Just making sure. You almost missed your flight last time."
"I'm already packed. I just have to go home and change. I already ordered a car to drop me off so I'll be there at 12 which is just in time for my flight."
"Remind me to send Jared a gift basket for arranging all of this for you," she laughed. "Leah and I have a layover so we should see you later on tomorrow night."
"Okay, great. I'll see you then," I said, hanging up.
Today was the day of our annual girls trip. Leah, Bria, and I made it a point to go on vacation every summer just to see each other. Drew and I got married after graduation and decided to stay in Houston so he could continue work on the oil rig, Leah and CJ got married and moved to Dallas where she's a marketing executive and he's an athletic trainer for the Cowboys, and Leah became a pediatrician and married a plastic surgeon named Robert and they live in Miami.
I pulled into the garage of the McDermott estate as we all jokingly call it, going inside to change for my flight.
"Baby, I'm home!" I yelled as I took off the So Kates I finally learned to keep on for more than 2 hours.
Drew came downstairs holding our precious 2 year old daughter, Bailey, as DJ followed.
"Say, hey Mama," he smiled as he and Bailey smothered me with hugs and kisses. "I brought all your bags downstairs. They're by the front door."
"Thanks, honey. My parents should be here tonight for their yearly monthlong visit so if you decide to go to work they can be with Bailey."
"I took off the whole week just like I do every year, Jo," he said with a kiss. "Go ahead and get changed before you miss your flight."
I ran upstairs and changed into something more comfortable before coming back down to kiss my little family goodbye.
"Alright, I'm headed out," I said walking towards the front door. "Bailey, be good for Daddy, Kimmy, and Poppa, k?"
"Okay, Mommy," she said in her sweet little voice.
"I love you," I smiled, giving her kisses and making her laugh before saying bye to Drew.
"Text me when you land. I love you," Drew said, kissing my cheek.
"I love you too."
I got in the car giving one last wave and blowing kisses as we pulled off, heading to the airport.
Later that night ...
My flight landed and I informed everyone of my arrival as promised. My luggage was gathered and placed in the car waiting for me as we began the drive to my destination. I smiled as I watched the palm trees pass, the sunset showing through them, the horizon where the ocean met the sky. After the year I had adjusting to my second year as a lawyer, I needed every minute of this vacation I could get.
We arrived at the house and the driver parked before opening the door to let me out. I handed him cash as a thank you for bringing my bags in as I made my way through my home for the next week. I went to the kitchen, grabbing the glass of chardonnay waiting for me, and walking to the balcony where I stared at the sunset.
"Welcome back, baby," a voice spoke softly behind me.
I turned and smiled as Slim stood from his chair and walked over to me, wrapping his arms around my waist and kissing my cheek before watching the sunset with me.
"I missed you so much," he whispered softly, kissing my shoulder.
"I missed you too. It seems like this year went by so slow."
"How's Bailey?
"She's amazing. A bit sassy, but she's definitely her mother's daughter."
"You know she's starting to look like me, right?"
"Actually I think she looks just like me," I laughed.
"Yeah, right," he chuckled, kissing my neck. "When do the girls arrive?"
"Tomorrow night."
"Good. It'll take all night and all morning to make up for the past year."
He turned me around, picking me up as I wrapped my legs around his waist and took me into the bedroom where we began making up for a year of not seeing each other before having to do it all over again.
