Zackery's attempt to retreat faltered, and he nearly tripped, catching himself just in time. His face flushed with embarrassment, a chaotic mix of colors. Raquel's grip on his arm was the only thing keeping him upright.
On the daybed, Lorraine's heart pounded in her chest. She twisted beneath Eugene, her body instinctively trying to escape his hold. 'Is he out of his mind? Here, with my family just on the other side of the screen, able to hear every sound?'
"Eugene, you can't—" she said, her face pale and her hands shaking.
A bead of sweat fell from Eugene's forehead onto Lorraine's lips, making them glisten enticingly. He lowered his head, locking eyes with her luminous gaze, his own eyes darkening.
In a deep, husky voice that was dangerously seductive, Eugene murmured, "I can't hold back, so just give in to me."
His breath was warm against her skin, and she felt a wave of dizziness wash over her. Her mind was a whirlwind, but all she could focus on was the intensity in his eyes. She had never seen him like this before—raw, unguarded, and utterly consumed by want.
"Eu-Eugene, what are you— Mmm—" Lorraine stammered.
His lips crashed down on hers, and she lost all sense of reason as he stole every last breath from her.
His hand slipped beneath her skirt, and she felt a shiver run through her. Her resistance wavered, and before she knew it, her arms were winding around his neck, her body responding to his touch despite her better judgment.
If it weren't for Raquel clutching Elsie's wrist and covering her mouth, Elsie would have screamed and lunged behind that screen to drag Lorraine out from under Eugene. Elsie didn't get it—this wasn't what she imagined. She believed Eugene belonged to her only.
Elsie's eyes blazed with jealousy and malice as she dug her nails into Raquel's hand, trying desperately to pull it away. But Raquel was determined to keep her silent, refusing to let her make a sound.
Zackery stood off to the side, his face flushed with embarrassment, his expression on the verge of crumbling.
From what he had seen tonight, it was clear that Eugene had feelings for Lorraine. But was this just a fleeting infatuation, or something more deliberate? Zackery couldn't fathom it.
If Lorraine could win Eugene over, he wouldn't mind giving her a push. But would Eugene really want a woman Stephen had rejected? Eugene was like a king on a pedestal—his thoughts were impossible to read.
Behind the screen, the sounds grew louder—Eugene's ragged breathing, filled with unbridled desire.
Elsie stamped her feet in frustration, her body writhing restlessly until she finally caught Zackery's attention. He shot her a cold glare and whispered, "Settle down. If you anger Eugene in there, we'll all be in trouble."
No one had expected things to turn out this way. Raquel and Elsie were sick with regret, but all they could do was stare helplessly at the screen, forced to listen as the daybed's harsh creaks pierced the air.
Raquel opened her mouth to speak, but she didn't dare poke the bear at a moment like this. Flushed crimson with embarrassment, she could only sit there and keep listening to the passionate "symphony" coming from inside.
Elsie fought with all her might to break free from Raquel's grip, but Raquel held her tight around the waist. There was nothing more humiliating than this. Her hatred for Lorraine burned fiercely. She wished she could tear her apart, limb from limb.
Her nails dug so hard into her palm that one snapped with a sickening crack. Blood welled up, dripping onto her clothes in vivid, shocking stains.
The creaking of the daybed, mingled with their moans, pierced through the screen and stabbed into Elsie's eardrums. She wanted to cover her ears, but more than that, she wanted to etch this humiliation into her memory.
Her teeth sank into her lower lip, her eyes blazing with frenzied hatred. 'Eugene is everything to me. How dare Lorraine flaunt this in front of me?' She seemed to forget that it was Eugene who had made the first move.
Lorraine had no room for thoughts beyond the moment. She felt like a tiny boat, tossed and turned in a stormy sea, her fingers clutching at Eugene's shoulders as if they were her only lifeline.
Her eyes grew hazy, her body responding to his every move. Her toes curled, and a wave of dizziness washed over her. Just as she was about to cry out, she bit down on his shoulder, muffling the sound that threatened to escape.
Eugene's pace quickened, the sting of her bite mixing with his pleasure. Lorraine's mind was a blur of light, like fireworks exploding behind her eyelids. Her body tensed, trembling with the force of it all.
When it was over, the room felt heavy with the weight of what had just happened. Lorraine was exhausted, her limbs heavy. Eugene, still breathing heavily, looked down at her. He seemed to hesitate, and then softened—she had almost drowned.
"You okay?" he murmured, his voice gentle. He helped her sit up, tugging her dress back into place, and slipped her shoes on. Then, without a word, he lifted her into his arms and carried her toward the stairs.
"Mmm," Lorraine managed to say, her voice barely a whisper.
She buried her face in his chest, her eyes tightly shut. The living room was quiet, but she could still hear the echo of Eugene's earlier words.
She knew the others were out there, and the thought made her cheeks burn. She buried her face deeper into his chest, not wanting to see anyone just yet.
As they disappeared around the stairwell corner, Zackery's expression finally began to recover a little. He collapsed onto the sofa, falling into heavy silence.
Elsie finally wrenched free from Raquel's grip, shoving her hand away so she could finally speak, "Mom, why did you stop me just now? That bitch Lorraine—she actually took advantage of Eugene when he was— She—"
Raquel sighed, "Elsie, I'm doing this for your own good. Can't you see? Eugene made his own choice—who dares to interfere?"
Though she hated to admit it, the truth was right before her eyes. Regret gnawed at her heart—knowing how ambiguous things were between them, she shouldn't have drugged him while Lorraine was still around.
Elsie blurted out, "No, Mom! We clearly—"
"Shut up!" Zackery roared, while Raquel immediately clamped a hand over Elsie's mouth, fearing she might shout something out in her anger.
The couple exchanged a knowing glance. Zackery slapped his thigh decisively. "Looks like we'll have to bring that girl back. Tomorrow morning, let Eugene meet her—then we'll see if he still wants to play the white knight for Lorraine on a whim."
Elsie's eyes lit up and a triumphant smile spread across her face. 'How could I have forgotten that bitch?' she thought.
Elsie grabbed her father's arm, her voice urgent. "Dad, call now—get her here first thing tomorrow. No delays. If Eugene changes his mind, we're screwed."
'Everything will be settled tomorrow,' Elsie thought, her lips curling into a vicious smile. 'I can't wait for the grand finale—Lorraine won't be walking away unscathed.'
The morning light tiptoed across the windowsill, slipping into Lorraine's room and pooling on the floor in a warm, golden puddle.
Lorraine awoke with a smile, the remnants of a sweet dream still clinging to her mind. Her eyes fluttered open, and there was Eugene, fast asleep beside her.
His long lashes rested against his cheeks, and in the soft light, he looked almost peaceful, all his usual sharp edges softened by sleep.
With Eugene by her side, Lorraine had finally been able to sleep soundly last night, free from the usual harassment and scheming from Zackery, Raquel and Elsie.
Thinking of all the tenderness Eugene had shown her last night, Lorraine's heart melted. Memories of their passionate encounter on the daybed flooded back, and her cheeks flushed. Tentatively, she extended a finger and lightly brushed his cheek before quickly pulling her hand back.
Lorraine held her breath, her heart fluttering nervously. Only when she was sure Eugene hadn't stirred did she let out a quiet sigh of relief.
Emboldened, she traced her finger from his brow down along his features, pausing at his well-defined lips. She stroked them lightly twice, then leaned in closer, studying his face with rapt attention, her eyes sparkling with curiosity.
Eugene had actually woken up before Lorraine, but kept his eyes closed out of laziness. 'She's just too tempting,' he thought. 'Doesn't she know how vulnerable a man is in the morning?'
Suddenly, his obsidian eyes flew open. He pulled her slender waist into his arms, his hand cradling the back of her head, and claimed her lips in a deep, lingering kiss.
Lorraine grew dazed from the kiss, while arousal surged through Eugene and his body responded instinctively. Murmuring against her lips, his voice husky with desire, he teased, "Trying to seduce me this early? Seems I didn't work you hard enough last night."
"N-No... it's not like that at all," Lorraine stammered, frantically waving her hands, her face flushing. "Can we go back now?"
"Fine," Eugene said tersely. He disliked the Shaw family—staying here was a complete waste of time. As for certain matters, he could handle them just as well back home.
Though he said "fine," Eugene refused to let go, keeping Lorraine tightly wrapped in his arms.
They stayed tangled together in bed for two hours, leaving the sheets in complete disarray. It was nearly noon by the time they finally managed a quick wash and went downstairs.
In the living room, she was surprised to see all three members of the Shaw family waiting—even Elsie was there, which was downright unexpected.
Eugene wrapped his arm around Lorraine and strode toward the door. Zackery, his heart racing with anxiety, quickly stepped forward to block their way. "Mr. Moore, must you leave so soon? Why not stay for lunch before you go?"
"Not necessary." Eugene arched a brow, his icy tone sending an involuntary shiver down Zackery's spine.
Raquel, watching the exchange, her mind raced. She needed to buy them some time. "Mr. Moore, of course we wouldn't want to keep you from your important schedule," she interjected quickly. "But Lorraine, yesterday was your grandmother's anniversary.
"You didn't get a chance to visit her memorial. She always adored you. Maybe you should say goodbye before you leave?"
Lorraine looked up at Eugene, her lips pursed. "Can I go say goodbye before we go?" she asked quietly.
Eugene nodded, letting her go pay her respects.
The Shaw family exchanged anxious glances, each seeing the same worry in the others' eyes—the one they'd been waiting for hadn't arrived yet.
Lorraine walked into the side hall, where a framed photograph of her grandmother hung on the wall. She stood in front of it and spoke softly, as if to an old friend. After a moment, she turned and rejoined Eugene.
Elsie, panicked, rushed forward to block Eugene's path. "Eugene," she pleaded, "could you stay for lunch before you go? You barely ate anything last night—you must be starving."
"Get out of the way," Eugene said, brushing Elsie's arm aside as he walked out with Lorraine.
Elsie hurried after them, racking her brain for a way to stop them from leaving.
Panic gnawed at her—until, by sheer luck, she spotted a figure approaching outside the living room door. Her eyes lit up. 'Finally, she's here,' she thought, hope surging in her chest.
