Eugene looked down at the lollipop being held to his lips, his usual charming smile still in place. "For lunch, you're giving me this?"
Those lollipops was clearly a cheap knockoff—the summer heat had left it half-melted and sticky, making it look thoroughly unappetizing. Yet, Lorraine bought so many that it seemed she'd cleared out the entire stall.
Eugene thought to himself, 'This silly girl. Can't she tell that when I said I liked it last time, I wasn't talking about these lollipops at all?'
"Yeah, didn't you say you liked these? I think this one's really cute. Come on, have a bite." Lorraine said, pushing the Doraemon candy even closer to Eugene's lips.
'What's so great about these lollipops? And they don't even taste good,' Eugene thought to himself. His lips twitched in suppressed distaste.
The lollipop reeked of burnt malt syrup. With those dull, muddy colors, Eugene simply couldn't bring himself to take a bite.
"Well, you went to all this trouble to get me so many," Eugene said with a gentle smile. "Here, you deserve the prettiest lollipop as a reward."
Eugene's hand enveloped Lorraine's, gently guiding the lollipop toward her lips. Inwardly, he breathed a quiet sigh of relief.
Lorraine stubbornly pushed the candy back to Eugene and said, "No, this one's for you. I've got plenty more, and this is the prettiest one. I picked it out especially for you." She thrust the lollipop back into Eugene's hand, refusing to back down.
Eugene turned his head away from the lollipop and set Lorraine down gently. He said, "This isn't nutritious enough for lunch. Just leave it here, and I'll take you out to eat."
Lorraine's eyes sparkled as she gave Eugene a sweet, warm smile. "Sure. Eating out is fine too, but you have to finish this lollipop first."
It seemed Lorraine was really set on having it out with that lollipop today. Eugene could only shake his head in exasperation. It seemed Lorraine wouldn't give up until he ate it.
Eugene reached out and took the lollipop. Under Lorraine's expectant gaze, he barely grazed it with his lips, then quickly set it aside. With a forced smile, he said, "Alright, I've had a taste. Let's go."
The entire office was filled with the cloying scent of lollipops. Eugene couldn't stand being here any longer.
Lorraine clung tightly to Eugene's sleeve, her eyes wide and anxious, as if she'd done something wrong. In a small, hesitant voice, she asked, "Eugene, do you not like these lollipops?"
Eugene smiled gently and said, "Oh, I like them. I really do."
Lorraine asked softly, her voice tinged with hurt, "If you really like it, then why did you just take one tiny bite? I... I got this especially for you."
Eugene thought, 'Here we go again. She's been repeating that same line ever since she walked into the office.' He genuinely regretted what he'd said last time.
Eugene picked up the Doraemon figurine from the table again. Staring at its exaggerated grin, he felt it was mocking him.
Opening his mouth wide and holding his breath, he crammed the whole lollipop inside. His gaze lingered on Lorraine's crescent-shaped eyes, sparkling with anticipation, as he quickly swallowed it with feigned delight.
His mouth was full of that cloying malt sugar, which made him want to gag.
Lorraine gazed longingly at Eugene as he pretended to relish the food, unable to resist her own craving. She shyly darted out her small, pink tongue to moisten her lips, the sight of her delicate, agile tongue leaving Eugene completely mesmerized.
Lorraine looked up at Eugene with wide, curious eyes. "Does it really taste that good? Can I pick one and try it too?"
She tilted her head at Eugene and turned toward the pile of lollipops, but she'd barely a step when his arm shot out, pulling her firmly against his chest.
Eugene leaned in, his breath sweet with candy, his dark eyes glinting with mischief. In a low, teasing voice, he murmured, "Want a taste of the lollipop? Hmm?"
"Mm-hmm, I do," Lorraine replied, nodding firmly and obediently.
"Let me share it with you," Eugene murmured. The moment the words left his lips, he cupped Lorraine's face and kissed her, transferring the cloying sweetness from his own mouth to hers. 'Maybe it's not so bad after all,' Eugene thought.
When Eugene finally let her go, a silvery thread of saliva still connected their lips, making Lorraine's cheeks flush crimson and her heart race all over again.
Eugene's eyes lit up with sudden interest as his gaze swept over the pile of lollipops. Casually picking one out, he teased with a playful glint, "Looks like you really enjoyed that. Care for another?"
"No, no!" Lorraine ducked her head under Eugene's teasing gaze, waving her hands frantically. "We should have a proper meal for lunch. Let's eat out instead."
Lorraine thought to herself, 'If this keeps up, he's going to end up having his way with me right here in the office, in broad daylight.'
Seeing the conflicted look on Lorraine's face, Eugene felt happy. He put his arm around her waist and started to lead her out, but after just two steps, a wave of discomfort washed over him, and he immediately let go.
"What's wrong?" Lorraine looked up at Eugene beside her and saw him scratching his face, where tiny red bumps were erupting before her very eyes. Not only that, but his face also seemed to be swelling slightly.
"Eugene, what's wrong?" Lorraine cried out, her soft little hands pulling his hands down and gently cupping his cheeks, her eyes brimming with both worry and tenderness.
Eugene sighed helplessly, his voice turning hoarse. "Looks like I'm having an allergic reaction."
"Th-then... what should we do?" Lorraine's voice trembled as panic set in. Grabbing Eugene's arm, she pulled him toward the door. "What are you allergic to? Allergic reactions can range from mild to life-threatening. We need to get you to the hospital."
At the VVIP deluxe ward, Lorraine stood anxiously by Eugene's bedside, watching intently as the doctor set up his IV. She fidgeted with the hem of her shirt; her face etched with worry.
"Mr. Moore, you've consumed something... let's say not entirely hygienic, and had an allergic reaction to one of its components," the doctor explained gently. "A couple of days on an IV drip and you'll be fully recovered."
As the doctor's words made Lorraine look increasingly guilty, Eugene gently waved his hand, signaling for the doctor to leave.
For a moment, only the two of them remained in the ward—so quiet that the only sounds were their breathing and the steady ticking of the ornate wall clock.
"Come here," Eugene beckoned to Lorraine, patting the space beside him on the bed. "Sit with me."
"No, I'll just stand," Lorraine said, biting her lip. Her voice was small yet clear as she added, "I'm so sorry. I didn't know you were allergic to the ingredients in the lollipops."
"It's okay. Come sit down," Eugene said. He didn't like how Lorraine looked so timid and scared as if she'd done something terribly wrong.
Lorraine hesitated for a moment. Seeing that Eugene was now a patient and knowing she was the reason he ended up like this, she obediently moved closer to him.
Before she could take two steps, Eugene reached out with a sweep of his long arm and pulled her firmly into his embrace.
Her heart clenched. Mindful of his injured hand, she let herself fall into his arms without resistance.
A gentle smile tugged at the corners of Eugene's lips as he slowly ran his large hand through Lorraine's hair, stroking it over and over in a soothing rhythm.
Lorraine's guilt instantly melted away under Eugene's gentle caresses. She obediently tilted her head up to gaze at his slightly swollen face, thinking to herself, 'Even like this, Eugene is still the most handsome man in the world.'
Suddenly, Lorenzo strode into the ward in his white coat. His eyes sparkled with mischief at the scene, and he grinned, "Oh-ho. Bad timing."
Eugene turned his head slightly, giving Lorenzo an icy glare. "If you know this is bad timing, then get out."
Hearing Lorenzo's voice, Lorraine suddenly remembered where she was. Now, upon hearing Eugene's words, she flushed. Flustered and fidgeting awkwardly, she scrambled to her feet, desperate to escape the awkward scene. "Lorenzo, you're here."
"Yeah, just came by to check up on him. I heard..." Lorenzo paused, his eyes darting between the two of them before breaking into a mischievous grin. "Boss, looks like you got played for once. What goes around comes around, huh? Man, this is wild."
Eugene raised an eyebrow and shot Lorenzo a glare.
Watching the scene, Lorraine covered her mouth to hide a giggle. She thought Lorenzo was just so much fun—always ready to clown around or act adorably cute, yet still impressively skilled. Only a close friend like Lorenzo would dare to tease Eugene like this.
Feeling Eugene's displeased gaze on her, Lorraine turned and saw his brows furrowed. The smile gradually faded from her lips.
Lorraine had just opened her mouth to speak when her phone rang. She glanced at the screen, and the name flashing there made her lips curve into an involuntary smile.
Holding her phone, Lorraine glanced at Eugene, bent down to pick up the thermos beside her, and pointed toward the door. "You two chat," she said. "I'll take this call and get some hot water."
Eugene raised an eyebrow as he watched her walk out cheerfully, his eyes narrowing slightly.
Lorenzo watched as Lorraine walked away, his intense gaze locked on the phone pressed to her ear. A devilish smirk played at the corners of his lips.
As soon as Lorenzo felt Eugene's icy stare—sharp as a blade—he shivered involuntarily, a chill running down his spine. Glancing over, he saw Eugene's deep, inscrutable eyes fixed on him and quickly forced a sheepish grin.
"Boss, you're really a sight for sore eyes right now. I should totally snap a pic and show it to Queenie and the crew."
"Actually, I heard the war area is still short on do-gooder doctors," Eugene said icily. "You'd be perfect for the job."
Lorenzo dropped the pretense of reaching for his phone and sidled closer. "Boss, your face is seriously swollen. Man, who knew those lollipops could get you into trouble? I wonder how exactly you guys ate them? And how could Lorraine—"
Eugene shut his eyes for a moment, fed up with Lorenzo's incessant chatter, and, without even looking, casually tossed the pillow behind him at Lorenzo.
With practiced ease, Lorenzo caught the pillow and tossed it back to Eugene. He pulled up a chair and sat down, his tone dripping with exaggerated sincerity. "I'll wait for Lorraine to get back before I leave. Wouldn't want to overstay my welcome."
Eugene arched an eyebrow, narrowing his eyes at Lorenzo, a knowing smirk playing on his lips.
Lorenzo feigned ignorance, sitting silently in his chair. Yet every so often, his eyes would dart eagerly toward the ward door, full of anticipation, as if he were waiting for someone.
Within minutes, the sharp click of high heels echoed through the quiet corridor, each step drawing nearer—sounding especially distinct in the stillness.
Lorenzo's eyes widened in surprise as he quickly looked away, exchanging a silent, knowing glance with Eugene. Lorenzo thought it was so familiar. The footsteps were powerful and haughty.
This wasn't the person Lorenzo was waiting for. Among all their acquaintances, only one person possessed such unhurried confidence and an imposing aura.
