Maria paused, glancing at Eugene. Seeing nothing weird in his expression, she continued, "When I was in the hospital, I overheard people in the next room gossiping that the CEO of the Moore Group was involved in some scandal.
"Later, I was scrolling through the news online and saw some papers running wild stories about you dating some divorced woman.
"Of course, I don't believe any of that nonsense. You're the ideal partner in the eyes of many women, and you'll never have such bad taste, right?" Maria shot Eugene another probing glance, trying to gauge his reaction.
Eugene smiled slightly. He tilted his head to look at Maria, asking calmly, "Mom, how can you be so sure that it's all nonsense?"
Maria's face went pale. She patted her chest, trying to keep a smile on. "Eugene, don't joke about things like that. You know I can't take that kind of shock."
"Does it sound like a joke to you?" Eugene said.
"It does. Eugene, you're just confused, and you don't know what you're doing." Flustered, she grabbed his arm, her face set with stubborn determination.
She said, "I'm going back to the Moore manor, not to Lesvinton. Whenever you're ready, come to talk to me and Queenie. I know you will."
Eugene raised an eyebrow, watching Maria's smile, then shot back with firm confidence. "No, I won't."
Maria said, "Oh, give me a break. Do you think that joke was appropriate? Never mind. I'm going." Maria remained convinced it was just a joke. She let go of Eugene's arm and stood up, walking out, but she still felt frustrated.
As Maria stepped out of the office, she spotted Hannah again. Glancing around, she pulled her aside. "Sweetie, can I ask you something? What does the woman who's been with your boss lately look like?"
She thought that since the scandal had caused such a stir and even made headlines, the employees must have heard about it. She figured that asking around would get her the truth.
Hannah hesitated, but soon said honestly, "Well, I'm just an intern, but I did hear there was a woman who seemed close to Mr. Moore.
"I heard she looks just like one of those Instagram models. She's a bit of a diva, but Mr. Moore acted like she could do no wrong."
"Really? Does he love her so much?" Maria's expression darkened.
Hannah nodded. "I heard he spoiled her like crazy. He showered her with gifts. It was like money didn't matter. Sometimes I just wonder what it feels like to be that lucky."
As Hannah kept talking, Maria grew increasingly annoyed. Unable to bear it any longer, she quickly left to catch the elevator.
However, she never thought riding an elevator would land her in the middle of gossip—especially about Eugene and that woman.
"Hey, did you hear that? Mr. Moore's girlfriend came to his office last time."
"Are you talking about that sharp, classy one with major boss energy? Yeah, she's quite lucky."
"Totally. I heard Mr. Moore is really into that whole queen energy thing."
Maria stood quietly in the corner of the elevator, looking calm, though every word reached her, sharp and clear. She thought, 'Queen vibes? What does that even mean?'
The elevator door slid open, and Maria stepped out into the lobby. Watching the employees come and go, she frowned and thought, 'Why were there two completely different stories about that woman? I'd better ask more people about it.'
She casually stopped a passing female employee and, with a warm smile, asked, "Excuse me. May I ask you a quick question? What does Mr. Moore's new girlfriend look like?"
The woman glanced at Maria, noticing how stylishly she was dressed. She figured she might be from the Moore family, so after a moment's hesitation, she decided it was better to just answer her questions.
She said, "Well, I've seen that woman. She's got a fresh, pretty look and a great figure. Her skin is flawless, and her smile is soft and warm. She has a kind, easygoing nature."
"Really?" Maria was completely baffled. Within moments, she had heard three very different takes. She thought, 'That woman really is a chameleon.
'Guess I have to find a chance to meet her in person. Now I want to see what kind of woman could captivate Eugene so completely and make him utterly devoted to her.'
After Maria left, Eugene stayed in his office for a while. Then he pulled out his phone and sent Lorraine a brief message. [What are you doing?]
Lorraine was chatting with Shirin when her phone rang with a WhatsApp notification. She quickly checked it, and the moment she saw it, she couldn't help smiling.
She quickly tapped out a reply. [I'm chatting with Shirin. What about you? What are you doing?]
Just as Eugene was about to reply to her message, someone knocked on the door. Isaac entered and said, "Mr. Moore, the shareholders' meeting is scheduled for 3 p.m. this afternoon. Your presence to preside over it is required."
"Got it," Eugene said, dismissing Isaac. He held his phone with a soft smile and quickly texted Lorraine back. [I'm hungry.]
Lorraine stared at the screen, biting her lips thoughtfully, wondering what he truly meant. She thought it over for a long moment before it finally dawned on her.
She thought, 'Could he mean what I think he means? When did Eugene get so fearless—flirting with me during work?'
Shirin smirked at Lorraine's dreamy expression and couldn't help but smirk. Lazily looping an arm around her shoulders, she teased, "Lorraine, do you know what your face reminds me of?"
"What?" Lorraine was confused.
"It's that restless feeling. It's like when people start catching feelings, flirting all around." She winked at Lorraine who instantly flushed.
The shareholders' meeting of the Moore Group started right on time at 3 p.m., but due to a minor delay, what was supposed to wrap up by 4:30 ended up dragging on until nearly 5.
Sitting at the head of the desk, Eugene glanced at the time on his phone and quickly sent her a message. [I'm still stuck in this meeting. I'll come back later.]
Lorraine's reply came almost instantly. Eugene looked at the message on his screen, and a faint smile tugged at the corner of his lips.
His smile was subtle, but it was enough to make the shareholders in the room shift uncomfortably. They thought, 'Is he smiling? Well, that was unsettling.'
Lorraine had only replied with a simple "I'll wait for you at home", but just those few words were enough to distract Eugene. Sitting there listening to a bunch of empty talk that led nowhere, he thought he'd rather be home with her.
However, as the CEO and largest shareholder of the Moore Group, he couldn't simply walk out of the shareholders' meeting.
After work, Lorraine came back to the palatial stone manor by herself. She wasn't quite used to staying at this place alone yet.
Just as Eugene had said, Queenie didn't come back. Left alone in the living room, Lorraine soon grew restless watching TV. Eventually, she got up and wandered into the kitchen, ready to make dinner.
She opened the fridge, only to find it nearly empty, so she grabbed her bag and headed out to the supermarket to stock up on some food.
She had only just stepped out when, by sheer chance, she crossed paths with Maria near the bus stop. She stepped forward with a warm smile, saying, "Ma'am, what are you doing here? Did you see your son?"
Seeing Lorraine, Maria's face lit up with delight, her eyes sparkling with surprise. With childlike excitement, she held Lorraine's hand and said, "Sweetie, I'm so glad to see you again."
Lorraine said, "Aren't you heading back to the sanatorium? Why are you—"
"Oh, I'm not going back to the hospital anymore. I've moved back home. I was just about to go grocery shopping. Why don't you come along with me?" Maria said.
Maria found herself deeply fond of Lorraine, who was always so gentle and kind.
"What? I—" Lorraine was stunned.
"Come on, I get bored on my own anyway. Since I'm living here now, I thought I'd pick up a few things for the place. Could you help me choose?" said Maria.
Lorraine just couldn't bring herself to say no to Maria's earnest request. Checking the time on her phone, she decided to go with her to the supermarket. Anyway, she was going there too in the first place.
"Alright then, let's go. Just tell me what you like, and I'll give you some good advice, but honestly, shopping for stuff like this is way more fun with your family." Lorraine smiled and led Maria across the street to the supermarket.
Maria tilted her head to study Lorraine, growing more and more fond of her. She scanned her thoughtfully, and an idea quietly took shape in her mind.
She said, "My son is always too busy. We have a whole household staff at home, but I don't like staying with them. That's why I'm here alone."
"I see. Well, no worries. I'll help you pick things out," said Lorraine.
Lorraine couldn't help but piece together Maria's family situation after hearing that. She realized that she was pretty lonely, so her gaze softened with a hint of sympathy.
The supermarket was just a short walk away, and soon, they arrived and went inside. Lorraine took the shopping cart, keeping Maria close. As they walked through the crowded aisles, she extended a protective arm around her.
Lorraine was thoughtful and careful, which pleased Maria. That idea in Maria's mind popped up again—she was determined to get to know this kind and gentle girl better.
