The loud crash of the falling knife startled Lorraine into stillness. She stared at the knife resting dangerously close to her foot, a cold shiver running through her chest at the thought of how close she had come to injury.
The noise from the kitchen startled Maria and Eugene in the living room. Maria sprang up from the couch and rushed toward the kitchen.
Baffled by Maria's sudden panic, Eugene hurried after her.
Lorraine crouched down, her hand trembling slightly as she picked up the knife. Blood welled from her finger, staining the floor.
"Oh, dear, what happened?" Maria asked with concern when she saw Lorraine's hand. "Did you cut your finger? Wait here. I'll go upstairs and get the medical kit." With that, she turned and hurried upstairs.
Lorraine looked up and saw only the back of Maria. Then she turned her head and caught sight of Eugene's face. Their eyes met, and both were clearly surprised to see each other.
She set the knife back on the counter and took several steps back, staring at the tall, good-looking man in front of her. She was too stunned to speak.
As she looked at his face, it slowly clicked—he looked just like the man in the photo in the living room. He was like a younger version of him.
Lorraine remembered Maria's words and thought, 'Well, he must be the one who is said to be with a divorced woman.'
"Seriously? You just gonna stand there and bleed, huh?" Eugene frowned and walked over, grabbing her injured finger and pressing down to stop the bleeding.
His face was cold and serious, enough to make her stomach twist. Lorraine grew uneasy. She glanced down at the finger he was holding, nervous and unsure what to say.
They were so close that she could feel his breath. She just felt that her heart was racing.
Eugene didn't say a word; he just stared at her with a stern face. The tension in the air made Lorraine uneasy, and she quickly looked up to meet his gaze.
She said, "Eugene, I met her at a sanatorium. I saw her fall and helped her back to her room, and that's how we got to know each other, but I never asked her name, and I didn't tell her mine either."
Eugene listened in silence, his face unreadable. The lack of any reaction made Lorraine's chest tighten with anxiety.
She said, "I saw her at the company entrance today. She said she was looking for her son, so I helped her and brought her inside.
"I ran into her again while I was out buying groceries. She asked me to go to the supermarket with her, then invited me to dinner. That's why I'm here."
She told Eugene everything, but the latter remained silent, which made her feel uneasy. She thought, 'He's not seriously thinking I'm the kind of girl who'd do anything just to approach him, is he?'
Lorraine took a shaky breath and looked at him, saying with an earnest look, "I didn't know this is your home or that she is your mother. I swear, I never meant to get close to your family for any ulterior motive."
The more she tried to explain, the worse it sounded, and she didn't know if he would believe her. Her eyes, always open and honest, now shimmered with unease and sincerity.
She grasped his arm lightly, her voice growing softer as she repeated her explanation, afraid Eugene would see her as a scheming woman. She was afraid that he would come to despise her and even distance himself from her.
As Eugene remained silent, Lorraine's voice faded to a whisper. Finally, she lowered her head, her nose stung and her eyes welled up with tears.
Eugene watched as Lorraine lowered her head, her shoulders trembling slightly, which made her look just like a child who had made a terrible mistake.
He listened quietly to everything she said, then let out a soft sigh. Reaching out, he gently lifted her chin and said gently, "It's okay. I got it."
Just one sentence from him was enough to calm her nerves. Lorraine's eyes widened, and she blinked back the tears. She hadn't expected him to be this calm, not at all. "What did you say?"
"I said it's alright." Eugene reached out and gave her cheek a gentle pinch. "What were you thinking just now?"
"I was afraid you'd end up hating me because of this." Lorraine felt tears threatening again. "I was afraid I had caused you trouble."
Eugene leaned down, brushing his lips softly against her forehead, his voice low and tender. "Don't worry about that. You're free to be yourself. No need to hold back or tiptoe."
Lorraine blinked through her tears, her vision blurry as she looked up. In his eyes, she saw a kind of gentle indulgence.
She bit her lips hard until it went numb. A gentle wave of warmth washed over her until it felt like her heart might burst with emotion.
"Are you touched?" Eugene nuzzled her nose with his.
"Just a little." She pouted. She didn't want to get too caught up in this because she wasn't sure about how he truly felt.
Eugene smirked. "So, how about letting me take you from behind tonight?"
Lorraine blushed instantly. She nervously glanced at the door, only relaxing a little when she saw that Maria hadn't come downstairs yet.
Eugene held her injured finger, examining it carefully. "How could you be that careless? I'll press it for a bit. My mom will bring the bandages soon."
"Don't bother. I can do it myself," Lorraine replied. She realized she had been so startled by his serious tone earlier that she forgot to press on the wound right away.
The pain throbbed, but she just bit her lips and said nothing.
Eugene raised an eyebrow at her determined look, then let go, allowing her to take over. However, he didn't leave. He stayed by her side, watching her with a tender smile.
When Maria came downstairs and saw the two of them standing together, she thought that they looked perfect together. She was also surprised to see the usually aloof Eugene being so close to Lorraine.
She walked down the stairs, handed the medical kit to Eugene with a smile, and said, "Eugene, take care of her. I still need to finish cooking."
Eugene took the kit, nodded, and focused on tending to Lorraine's injury. He took a bandage from the kit and carefully applied it, his touch gentle and slow. Maria, who was about to cook, couldn't help but glance over at them repeatedly.
She thought, 'Since when had he become so gentle?' She smiled and casually asked, "Eugene, do you know this young lady?"
Lorraine's heart tightened. Before she could think of the right words to respond, Eugene shook his head firmly and replied, "No."
Relief washed over her, but it was quickly replaced by a tinge of disappointment. She couldn't figure out what Eugene was thinking or why he told Maria they didn't know each other.
However, she remembered how Maria had once called her bitch through gritted teeth, and soon, all her doubts and disappointment faded away.
Lorraine thought, 'This is probably better. If she knows who I am, I won't even know how to face her.' She lowered her eyes, staring at her bandaged finger, and avoided Eugene's gaze.
Maria, however, couldn't help thinking how perfect Eugene and Lorraine looked together.
She said, "It's okay. You'll get to know each other soon enough. Eugene, why don't you go ahead and leave us to it? There's not much you can do here anyway. Just wait outside, and dinner will be ready soon." Maria shooed Eugene away.
Lorraine watched Eugene leave, then quickly looked away. The next second, she caught the probing look in Maria's eyes and felt a slight unease.
"Did you guys talk just now? He's Eugene, my son." As soon as Maria mentioned her son, she looked very proud.
"Yeah, I know," Lorraine said. She thought, 'Honestly, anyone would recognize Eugene the moment they saw him. After all, he's famous around here.'
Maria said, "Isn't he handsome? He got that straight from my husband. He looks just like my husband did when he was younger, even down to his temper and personality.
"He may seem indifferent, but deep down, he cares about those close to him. He's just reserved and doesn't talk much. Sometimes, though, he can be quite the chatterbox, and—"
It seemed that a mother, when speaking of her child, could always weave a tapestry of their finest qualities.
Listening to her and seeing the smile on her face, Lorraine couldn't help but feel happy too. She knew Eugene well enough to agree with every word.
All those good qualities—he truly had them, and not a single one was exaggerated. If anything, they made him seem even more wonderful.
Maria chattered on and on, only to suddenly realize that she had just forgotten about one thing. "Oh dear, I keep forgetting things."
"What is it?" Lorraine asked gently.
"We've met so many times, and I still don't know your name. What's your name, dear?" Maria asked.
