Eugene just sat there calmly as if he hadn't heard their conversation or didn't really care what they were talking about.
The moment Maria recalled her meeting Lorraine at the Moore Group earlier and Eugene denying any knowledge of Lorraine in the kitchen, she was hit with sudden clarity.
She hesitated for a long while and said, "Are you from the Shaw family?"
Lorraine nodded.
Maria's face flickered with conflicting emotions as if caught in an internal struggle. After a moment, she said, "So, Elsie is your—"
"My half-sister. We share the same dad," Lorraine said.
"I see." Maria stared at her for a while and said, "Why do you happen to be at the Moore Group?"
"I'm an intern there. Alice brought me in," Lorraine answered honestly.
"Oh, okay." Maria quietly glanced over at Eugene. Seeing him still expressionless and focused on his phone, she let out a sigh of relief and asked, "Are things tense between you and your family?"
She noticed that Elsie never greeted her since she came in just now and that they hardly talked to each other.
Lorraine nodded. "I haven't come home for a while."
Having asked nearly all she intended, Maria suddenly recalled the most pressing question. With cautious hesitation, she asked, "You don't have a boyfriend, right?"
Eugene's fingers tensed slightly as his phone screen went dark without a sound.
Lorraine said, "No, I don't."
"Great." Maria felt much more relieved. She cared nothing about Lorraine's background. She just thought she was a very good girl.
Just as she was about to continue, Eugene put his phone back into his pocket and stood up. "I just remembered I've got something to deal with at the Moore Group. I have to go."
"Seriously?" Maria snapped, frustrated. She hadn't even gotten to the important part yet.
Eugene said nothing as he walked straight to the door and bent down to change his shoes—clearly set on leaving, no room for discussion.
Maria stood up immediately and pushed Lorraine forward. "Lorraine is going home. Why don't you give her a ride?"
"Are you sure that's a good idea?" Eugene said as his gaze lingered on Lorraine, who was nearly pushed into his arms.
Maria rolled her eyes. "Of course. She hasn't had dinner yet. Besides, she works for you. Are you gonna leave her here alone?"
Eugene cast them a quick look and headed out.
"That was a yes. Lorraine, hurry up and catch up with him," said Maria.
Maria stood by the door, smiling as she watched them walk out of the courtyard. Then she headed back into the living room and stopped by Fletcher's picture on the desk.
She said, "Fletcher, that girl is the one I'd hoped might become part of our family. I just didn't expect her to be from the Shaw family, but hey, that doesn't matter. She's a good girl, and I just hope Eugene likes her."
Lorraine was following close behind when Eugene suddenly stopped in his tracks, and she bumped right into him.
Before she could step back, he swept her up and pinned her against the tree. "No boyfriend, huh?" he muttered and bit down hard on her lips.
Lorraine winced and looked up at him, eyes wide and innocent. That look lit a fire in his chest, and he leaned in again, kissing her harder, only pulling away when he was out of breath. "You'll pay for that after we get home."
Lorraine moaned softly.
She kept struggling, rubbing just enough to turn him on. He pressed against her lips and said, "Shall we get into the car?"
Lorraine was speechless, thinking, 'Since when did he become so horny?' She stopped him and said, "Eugene, you just sound like someone."
"Who?" Eugene said.
Lorraine said, "One of those guys in the books Sheila always reads."
"What books?" he raised an eyebrow.
"I forgot the name. She calls them, uh, spicy romance or something," said Lorraine.
Eugene was speechless. He reached out, scooped her up, and tossed her into the backseat of the car, pinning her down. "Is this how those men in those books usually act?"
His hands wandered over her with restless urgency as he kept kissing her. "Is this how you want it?"
"Not today." Lorraine felt herself melting under his touch. She gripped his shirt, breathing hard in the dim light, watching him with a mix of awe and desire.
He finally let go only after she almost lost control. She stayed in the backseat, fixing her clothes, while he walked around to the driver's seat.
"Eugene." Lorraine was still worried. "Are you just gonna tell your mom everything about Stephen?"
Eugene nodded and said, "Yeah. What choice do I have? Do you want me to tell my mom I kidnapped the bride and had sex with her on her wedding night?"
Lorraine was speechless, thinking, 'You know that's not what I mean.'
Lorraine looked down to fix her clothes, and when the light turned red, she slipped her arms around Eugene from behind. "Eugene, thank you."
She thanked him for recognizing and protecting her dignity.
Eugene blinked as the light turned green, and behind them, the impatient drivers pressed close, urging them forward without subtlety. He chuckled and said, "Are you trying to choke me?"
Lorraine snapped back to reality, realizing how tightly she had been hugging him, so she quickly let go. "Okay, just drive."
"If you want to thank me, you'll have to show it later when we go back home," Eugene said with a sly grin.
Beyond the traffic signal lay the entrance to Antiquity Lane, where vehicles were prohibited from entering. They would need to park outside and continue the remaining distance to the palatial stone manor on foot.
Once the car was parked, he came around to open the door. Lorraine froze, blushing as she said, "Not here, okay?"
Eugene smirked. "Can't wait, huh? Don't worry, I'll make sure you won't be able to forget tonight."
She knew she had walked right into his trap and reached out to push him away, but he caught her wrist. "What else do those men do?"
"What?" she didn't know what he meant.
"The ones in those spicy stories you mentioned." He pulled her closer with that same grip, and before Lorraine realized what was going on, she was already on his back.
"I know you're tired." He tossed her the car keys, held her steadily on his back, and carried her smoothly out of the car.
Lorraine was startled and she quickly put her arms around his neck to keep her balance.
It was just after dinner time, and the bustling Antiquity Lane was still crowded. People couldn't help but glance over at them.
"Put me down. I can walk." Lorraine struggled.
Eugene took her shoes off with one hand and said, "Are you sure?"
Lorraine was speechless. She took her shoes from him and relaxed against his back. She somehow felt safe on his strong shoulders.
More and more people glanced their way, but Eugene carried her with calm confidence.
Lorraine felt awkward, but seeing how calm he was, she relaxed and settled quietly against his back, ignoring the stares around them. A warm feeling spread through her.
Before they went into the palatial stone manor, she said softly, "Eugene."
"Are you gonna thank me again?" Eugene smiled.
"Well, I am," she said.
He set her down against the doorframe and joked, "If you're really that thankful, maybe try showing it a little more physically."
Lorraine couldn't help laughing.
Eugene tapped her nose and said, "Alright, let's go in."
She nodded and pursed her lips together, blinking back the tears that had welled up in her eyes. Just then, his phone rang.
Lorraine said, "You got a call."
"I don't want to answer it," he took her hand.
"What if it's something urgent?" she said.
Eugene said, "Pick it up for me."
Unable to refuse him, Lorraine sighed and reached into his pocket, fishing out his phone. Seeing the caller ID on the screen, she hesitated. "Are you sure? It's Queenie."
"Yeah. Go ahead." With one arm around her, he fished out his keys and unlocked the door.
"You'd better answer it yourself," said she.
"I just can't." He held her even tighter.
Lorraine could only pick it up and press it against her ear. "Hello."
Queenie was obviously stunned. "Lorraine?"
"I am," said Lorraine.
"Where is Eugene? Put him on the phone." Queenie sounded mad.
Lorraine said, "He is busy now. He—"
Eugene scooped her up again, carried her through the courtyard and into the house, then gently set her down on the bed. Only then did he take the phone from her hand and step outside.
"Hello?" he said.
"Did you do it on purpose?" Queenie asked angrily.
Eugene shrugged. "What do you mean? We just came back home."
Queenie took a deep breath. "I've already let a lot of things slide, but you know what we're supposed to do. You have to break up with her."
Eugene leaned against the tree in the courtyard, his voice growing quiet and distant. "Come on, it's none of your business."
Queenie, who was in the bathroom, froze for a while. She turned off the tap and said, "Are you going to spend the rest of your life with her?"
"Yes," he said without a second thought, and that little smirk on his face made him look like a teenage boy in love.
Queenie yelled, "No, I won't agree to this."
"I didn't seek your approval. Besides, Mom has given her blessing," Eugene said. He had always been the master of his own life, and he never failed.
"I just called Mom. Why are you doing this to us? You can't just be with her without telling me." Queenie sneered, her voice dropping lower.
Her voice cracked as she spoke again. "Eugene, you haven't forgotten why we're going after Gordie, right? He could strike back at any moment, yet you're telling me you're in love with the very woman we once used.
"What have these years in Jonalesburg been for? I've lived a lonely life while my husband is still locked up in that damn prison. All of this is for you, Eugene. Don't forget what you're supposed to do next."
