She looked up and saw a disgusting face right in front of her. She froze for a second, then slapped him hard across the face. "Henry?" He looked like a total mess and smelled. She felt like throwing up.
She remembered Eugene had said Henry got fired from Moore Group and was under investigation for leaking company information to the Shaw family.
Lorraine didn't know why he was here. Henry reached out and touched her cheek. "Don't be scared, Lorraine. I just wanted to ask if you've seen Elsie lately."
His dirty fingernail scratched her skin. Her whole body tensed. "Why are you asking me about her? I thought you two didn't even know each other."
Her instincts screamed danger. She couldn't let him know she had any clue about his connection to Elsie. The more clueless she acted, the safer she'd be.
Henry gave her this creepy little grin. "Didn't know her? You and Eugene heard us that night, didn't you?" Her heart dropped. He knew it.
He reached out again, stroking her cheek. "The Shaw family's done for now. Just tell me where they are, okay?"
Lorraine had no idea where they were. Panic started rising fast. She tried to push him off. "Henry, seriously. You came out here just to ask about Elsie?"
"Yeah," said Henry.
"Then let me go. I'll call and ask for you." She tried hard to sound chill, like she was actually trying to help. Henry just stared at her for a second, then let go.
There wasn't even a signal up here. She didn't know if he realized that. She grabbed her phone from her bag, curled up by the wardrobe, and pretended to make a call.
At first, Henry just waited there, looking kind of dazed. But after five minutes, he started freaking out. He tugged at his hair. Then he started slamming his head into the wall.
Lorraine had studied this before. It was a withdrawal. Her hands were shaking. She kept punching in fake numbers, trying to figure out a way to escape. But the door was blocked. She was stuck.
Suddenly, Henry rushed at her. He snatched her phone, looked at the screen, and exploded. "No signal? You liar! You damn liar! All the Shaw women are liars!"
Lorraine didn't even get a chance to move. A slap hit her face so hard that everything went blurry. But she didn't stop. She made a break for the door.
Henry grabbed her by the hair and slammed her down to the ground. Her forehead hit the edge of the bed. Blood ran into her eyes. Her scalp burned. It started swelling right away. She thought she must've looked a mess.
Henry's eyes were bloodshot. He lunged again and started tearing at her clothes. "Elsie, don't leave me. Don't go. I'll do whatever you say, just stay with me."
He was totally gone. In his mind, she was Elsie. He was way too strong. Elsie couldn't fight him off.
Her head pounded. She was in agony. She clung to her shirt collar, but he pried her fingers off, one by one. Her pinky felt busted. It hurt like hell. She honestly thought she might die.
Her head was spinning, like her brain wasn't getting any air. Everything blurred, except that one face. It burned into her memory. So clear. So permanent. No matter what, she couldn't forget it.
She was shaking all over. Her legs kept kicking, trying to break free. But he held her down tight. There was no fighting back. She was outmatched. Men were just stronger. She didn't stand a chance.
Henry's disgusting mouth came at her. He ripped her dress. Then started yanking at the rest. Suddenly, footsteps echoed outside. Then a voice called her name, soft but familiar. "Lorraine?"
It hit her like a lightning strike. She froze. Tears welled up fast. It was Eugene. She didn't know why he was here. But thank God, he came! She tried to yell. But nothing came out.
Henry stopped, too. His body stiffened. His eyes went dark. He turned to look at her. Then, he suddenly yanked her into his arms. He smashed a bowl on the table, grabbed a sharp shard, and pressed it to her neck.
Then he dragged her to a corner. Outside the room, Eugene was getting restless. Just before Lorenzo left, Eugene had decided, on a total impulse, to come check on her. But the moment he arrived, he regretted not showing up sooner.
The place was a dump. He was worried she was so clumsy that she wouldn't be able to manage living here.
So when he called her name and got no answer, then heard something crash inside, he didn't wait. He kicked the door in. It wasn't even locked. It swung open like paper.
And what he saw made his stomach drop. He froze, completely stunned. Behind him, Lorenzo, Sheila, and a few other medical college students tried to rush in. Eugene stuck out an arm and blocked them.
"Henry! What the hell do you think you're doing?" he shouted.
Lorraine heard his voice again. She fought to open her eyes. But everything was a red haze. She couldn't see anything.
Henry just smiled. "Mr. Moore. Been a while, huh?" Weirdly enough, the second he saw Eugene, he stopped looking scared. Because he saw something in Eugene's eyes: worry, fear, and love. The kind one couldn't fake.
Henry got it now, Eugene cared about Lorraine. And just like that, Henry knew he had the upper hand. No more hiding. No more crawling around like a rat. He was not scared of anyone.
Eugene didn't waste time. His whole body was wound tight, but he forced himself to stay calm. His voice was steady. "I'll deal with you and Moore Group later," he said coldly. "But this girl has nothing to do with it. Let her go."
"Nothing to do?" Henry let out a raspy laugh. His hands were shaking like crazy from withdrawal. "I can't even keep this thing steady. If it slips, this sharp edge will slice her neck open. She'll be gone in seconds."
Hearing the words "nothing to do", Lorraine stiffened. "I just came with some friends to drop off meds," Eugene said. "She needs to sign for the delivery. Then we'll leave." He nodded toward the yard. "Go check."
Sure enough, a few large boxes were sitting right outside the room. Hearing those words, Henry looked a little thrown off.
Eugene turned and called out, "You, go bring the supplies in. Lorraine needs to verify and sign them. After that, we are out."
"Eugene!" Sheila nearly lost it. She was ready to run in, but Lorenzo grabbed her and pulled her back. A couple of guys quickly brought the boxes inside.
Eugene pulled out a knife. He slashed the tape on each one and kicked them open one by one. "Take a look for yourself. It's all medicine. Nothing else."
"She saw the medicine. You all can leave now." Henry tightened his grip on Lorraine and refused to let go. He stared straight at Eugene, testing him with his eyes.
"But there's Demerol inside," Lorenzo said as he pulled out a few ampoules from under a box and held them in his palm. "You can't just leave that stuff lying around. She has to sign for it."
He sounded all business, calm and firm. Henry's eyes lit up. His body twitched slightly. The craving eased up just a little. That stuff might be enough. His arms loosened a bit. "Mr. Moore, I want to make a deal with you."
"With me?" Eugene gave a lazy smile. He pulled a cigarette from his pocket and leaned against the doorframe. He lit the cigarette slowly, like he had all the time in the world. He didn't look anxious at all.
Sheila stood behind him. If she hadn't seen the cold sweat soaking through his shirt, she would've thought he didn't care one bit.
"Yes," Henry nodded. "I want Moore Group to drop the charges against me. And I want fifty million. In cash. U.S. dollars."
"Tch." Eugene let out a small laugh and blew a ring of smoke. "You want to bargain with me? You don't even have leverage. What gives you the right to make demands?"
'Leverage?' Henry froze. 'Isn't the person in my hands enough?' "You don't think I'll kill her right now?" he snapped.
"I believe you," Eugene said calmly. "From the day you stole files from Moore Group, I knew you were capable of anything." Moore Group already offered top-tier employee benefits, yet Henry still did what he did. People like him were either crazy or stupid.
Eugene glanced at the shard of porcelain in Henry's hand. "You can keep pressing it against her. But she has to sign the paperwork. Once she signs, we're done. We'll leave. I can't stand this dump. I get annoyed just looking at it."
Henry still didn't want to give in. "I don't believe you."
"Whether you believe me or not," Eugene said as he paused. Suddenly, his phone started ringing in his pocket. He pulled it out. The screen showed a number from Jonalesburg.
His eyes darkened slightly. He put the call on speaker. "Eugene, where are you?" Norah's voice came through, soft and sweet.
She had already called him over fifty times. He finally picked up, so she made sure not to sound mad.
"I'm out handling something. Why aren't you asleep yet?" Eugene asked gently.
"I did sleep. But then, I missed you in my dream. So I woke up to see when you'd be back."
"I'll be back soon. Just waiting on someone to sign a form," Eugene said patiently. "If you can't sleep, warm up a glass of milk. Drink it slowly. And once you finish, I'll be right there in front of you."
Norah's heart almost burst from happiness. She felt like the whole world bloomed for her. She tried to hold back her excitement and kept a little dignity in her voice. "Will you stay with me tonight?"
Eugene chuckled. "Of course. Who else would I stay with, if not you?"
"Drive slow, then. I'll wait for you no matter how long it takes." She ended the call with a happy sigh.
Eugene's smile didn't fade. His lips stayed curved up. He even gently brushed his fingers over the phone screen. Then he looked calmly at Henry. "You heard that, didn't you?
"My fiancée's waiting for me. I don't want her to wait too long. Let Lorraine come over and sign. Once she's done, we'll leave. You'll be on your own."
