When Eugene returned to the car, Zackery remained standing there. The slums behind looked grim and hopeless. He appeared old and bent, like a gambler who had lost everything in a casino, feeling down and anxious.
When Eugene got in the car, Lorraine was still staring blankly at the window. Then she was startled by the noise he made. "He didn't ask for anything, did he?" she asked nervously.
Eugene reached out and ruffled her hair. He used tricks in business but hated lying or being fake in his personal life. But now, he decided to deceive her a little. She had seen too much darkness. He wanted to bring her more light.
"Your father said he didn't know we were together and that I should treat you well." Eugene's voice was sexy and smooth.
But Lorraine didn't believe it. She'd rather believe that the heavens were raining knives than believe that Zackery was good to her.
Eugene gently rubbed her ear. "Minds change with the situation. Family ties still hold some warmth."
Lorraine was half-convinced. She bit her lip and stayed quiet, emotions tangled. She wanted to trust Eugene's words but had no faith in Zackery.
Eugene started the car and asked, "Don't feel like going to the Moore Group today. Want to have some fun somewhere?"
He was dead serious. No one would work right after getting married. He didn't want to mistreat himself or Lorraine like that.
Lorraine was shocked. She asked him, "You're really not going to work?"
"Yeah, how can I focus on work with a temptress like you around?" he joked.
Lorraine was confused. She glanced at the car's mirror and thought, 'A temptress? That's a stretch. I'm not flirty or tempting. Plus, he's the one slacking off. I'm not asking him.'
Eugene was amused by her and tried to tousle her hair, but his phone rang. It was Maria calling. He answered quickly, "Mom."
"Eugene, get over here fast!" Maria cried herself hoarse. "Queenie is gone!"
Eugene took Lorraine to the hospital. Chaos broke out outside the top-floor ward. Maria, holding on to her last bit of control, kept all witnesses there. At her age, that was all she could do.
The director stood meekly at the end of the hallway, waiting. Eugene arrived and questioned him immediately. Lorraine stood outside the VIP ward, looking inside through the glass.
The bedsheet was pulled back, and the slippers on the floor were gone. A few drops of blood were on the floor. No other traces remained. It seemed like Queenie never came to the hospital.
Maria sat silently in the corner, feeling dejected and downcast. Lorraine wanted to comfort her but felt awkward. She took a clean cup from the water cooler, filled it with water, and placed it gently beside Maria.
Maria glanced up at Lorraine, startled. She sighed, picked up the cup, and took a sip, then moved her dry lips, trying to speak. However, she couldn't find the words and gave up.
Lorraine stood to the side for a moment. The mood became tense and awkward. Staff moved around, but no one was allowed to leave the floor after learning about Queenie's absence.
Everyone looked anxious. After all, in Auretian, it was safer to anger anyone than cross Eugene. They were scared that Eugene would blame them, as they knew that his temper was unpredictable.
Eugene showed up quickly. He ignored others and focused solely on his family. "Found Queenie."
"Where is she?" Lorraine and Maria spoke in unison.
"In Jonalesburg."
"Jonalesburg?" Maria paled instantly.
Lorraine was shocked, too. She knew who was in Jonalesburg, of course. But Queenie just had surgery, and the wound might not even be fully healed yet. 'What good would going to Jonalesburg do?' she wondered.
Eugene made a call. "Isaac, buy tickets now. I'm going to Jonalesburg."
Isaac said something. Eugene frowned deeply and shouted, "Why waste time on charters and the flight routes? No time! Buy tickets now!"
Isaac got flustered. When Eugene hung up, Isaac jumped into action without a pause. Eugene loosened his shirt collar. "I'm off to Jonalesburg now to bring Queenie back."
He dared not think how she had sneaked out of the hospital or how she flew to Jonalesburg overnight. Queenie was like Fletcher, tough and unyielding. Eugene feared she might do something drastic.
Maria wept. "I'm going with you."
"No need." Eugene refused. "This is the safest place around." Jonalesburg wasn't the stronghold of the Moore family after all. Plus, the Pedler family was there, too. He had just angered Norah, so he worried that Ian would try some shady moves.
Maria swayed, leaned on the wall, and gave up.
Eugene scanned around and saw Lorraine standing in the corner. She watched him anxiously, but stayed back, not wanting to add to his problems. When he waved at her, Lorraine hurried over.
"Did you catch everything I said?" Eugene asked.
Lorraine nodded. She hadn't missed a word.
Eugene nodded and said, "I'll merge the security teams soon. Mom will stay with you at the palatial stone manor."
She glanced at him, unsure of what she had heard.
She thought, 'Mrs. Moore is highly important, and he wants me to live with her. Is he trying to protect both of us?'
Isaac called again. "Mr. Moore, all set. The airport ride is at the hospital gate."
The busy street sounds in the background suggested Isaac was already at the hospital entrance. Eugene grunted in agreement, hung up the phone, and said, "I'm out."
There was no time to waste. Already turning, he walked straight to the elevator without a glance back. Watching his broad, solid back, suddenly, Lorraine felt crying.
Just as Eugene stepped into the elevator, he glanced at Lorraine's way. Through the thick crowd, he spotted her face instantly. His thin lips moved, mouthing some silent words before the doors slid shut.
But Lorraine caught it. What he said was "Wait for me." She couldn't hold back the sting anymore. A tear suddenly rolled down. 'He's just going to Jonalesburg to pick up Queenie. Why am I so upset?' she wondered.
Eugene arrived at the hospital entrance and got straight into the car. Isaac bought a ticket for the soonest flight, taking off in half an hour. Traffic in the city was jammed at rush hour. Gritting his teeth, Isaac sped onto the freeway.
Eugene sat in the back seat, window half down. Cold fall wind rushed in, making even his breath cold. His mind scanned Jonalesburg's map and all the Moore family's businesses and contacts there.
As he started guessing who Queenie might turn to or where she might go, a pang of regret hit him. Queenie had been in Jonalesburg much more than him these past few years. So he wasn't sure he could find her.
'I can only do my best. But how could doing my best be enough? I have to find her and bring her back safely,' he thought.
He closed his eyes, and the shooting years ago appeared in his mind. Sparks, bullets, blood everywhere, aggressive media, overwhelming public anger, and ruthless suppression from the authority. Perhaps from that time on, his life was no longer in his own hands.
However, he never gave up and blamed no one. Compared to most people, he had plenty. But after meeting Lorraine, he realized that, compared to ordinary people, what he had actually was nothing.
Therefore, he fought back, resisted, and worked hard. But some people were always pushing him, using every means at their disposal.
"Mr. Moore!" Isaac gasped.
Eugene opened his eyes, his voice steady. "Go ahead."
"Someone wants us dead." Isaac gripped the steering wheel, his palms sweaty.
Soon after entering the highway, Isaac spotted cars following them. After a turn, he took the airport expressway. Those custom-armed Hummers followed right behind and closed in on them with fierce, almost insane aggression.
Today, in a hurry, Isaac had only his Passat. A Hummer cut in aggressively, scraping the side of their black car and pushing them toward the shoulder. Up ahead was a highway bridge, and there was no third lane.
They drove over 150 kph. The Passat's left side mirror was ripped off, fell onto the road, and was crushed into pieces instantly. The speed warning had gone off, but no one was stopping.
Eugene didn't know who was in that car, but he knew their intention. It was neither a threat nor a warning. Clearly, they wanted Eugene to die.
