The Shaws were already asleep when Eugene arrived. The gatekeeper jerked upright at the sight of him, his half-eaten roasted chestnut tumbling to the ground as he scrambled to alert Zackery and Raquel.
The villa's lights flicked on abruptly. Still in their pajamas, the couple stumbled downstairs, bleary-eyed—only to freeze when they saw Eugene. They gaped at him as if he were some high-profile guest.
"We... we didn't know you were coming," Zackery said, hunching slightly beside Eugene's six-foot-one frame. The posture made him look even smaller, almost uneasy.
Eugene barely acknowledged them. Without a word, he strode past and into the villa.
The others exchanged confused glances but didn't dare to question him. They just trailed after him, watching as he moved through the house with the ease of someone who owned the place.
Near the entrance, a small suitcase and a rabbit cage sat waiting. Eugene scooped them up without breaking stride.
"Mr. Moore—" Zackery started, Zackery began, demanding an explanation for Eugene's behavior.
"Shh." Eugene shook his head slightly, his voice barely above a whisper. "Don't wake it." He nodded toward the rabbit, already sound asleep in its cage.
Zackery stared in disbelief. 'A damn rabbit is receiving more consideration than us? We haven't even been given a chance to speak,' he thought bitterly.
Without another word, Eugene turned and walked out the front door. Moments later, his car pulled away—the entire encounter over in less than five minutes.
Zackery and Raquel stood frozen, the winter wind biting through them, until they finally snapped out of it. "Why was he taking Lorraine's things?" Zackery murmured.
Raquel was just as confused. "No idea. Maybe Stephen sent him?"
"Stephen asking Eugene for favors? Don't be ridiculous," Zackery scoffed. "Unless... Mr. Gordie Moore sent him?"
"Probably? It's freezing out here. I'm going up to bed." Raquel glanced toward the door. "Where's Elsie? Why isn't she back yet?"
If Elsie found out Eugene had come by today, she'd be too excited to sleep at all.
"Ms. Shaw is still at the hospital getting her rabies shots. She should be back shortly," the servant answered, eyes downcast.
"You should all go," Raquel said, grabbing Zackery's arm as she turned. "Zackery, stop obsessing over Lorraine for once. Think about Elsie too. We need to plan something for her."
"Plan what?" Zackery looked genuinely puzzled.
"A wedding, obviously," Raquel hissed, leaning in close. "Elsie's been in love with Eugene for years. We need to make sure she marries into that family."
The Rolls-Royce glided away from the Shaw residence, its tires humming against the pavement.
Lorraine sat cradling her stuffed rabbit, bringing it close to her face.
Just as she leaned in for a kiss, Eugene's voice sliced through the silence. "Don't," he said flatly.
"Why?" Lorraine asked.
"I said no," he repeated. "And I mean it."
"But I always kiss it," she shot back, her brow furrowing in confusion.
Eugene's jaw tightened slightly. "Not anymore."
Lorraine exhaled sharply. "Such a tyrant," she mumbled under her breath, stroking the rabbit's ears longingly. She bent down again, thinking she might steal one last kiss.
"Do it, and this rabbit becomes tomorrow's stew." Eugene's tone left no room for argument.
Lorraine went rigid. The threat couldn't be clearer.
With a resigned sigh, she placed the rabbit back in its cage, a sense of loss settling over her. The agitated rabbit chose that moment to kick violently. Its powerful hind legs connected squarely with her injured knee.
She gasped in pain, her fingers slipping open as the rabbit darted back into its cage.
Eugene frowned, slamming the brakes as he turned to see her pale face. "You okay?"
