Lorenzo shook his head as Eugene and Lorraine appeared at the hospital yet again.
These days, Eugene was turning into a frequent visitor. This marked the second time Lorenzo had been pulled out of the ER for him in just one week.
While Lorraine was getting her CT scan, Lorenzo sidled up to Eugene with a smirk. "So, you break her this time?"
Eugene pulled out a cigarette and lit up.
Lorenzo's grin grew wider. "Seriously, what position actually wrecks someone's knee?" His so-called medical curiosity was, as usual, entirely inappropriate.
Eugene glared at Lorenzo, but Lorenzo ignored him, snatching a tray from a passing nurse.
"No smoking in here," Lorenzo said casually.
Eugene took another drag, paying no attention to his words.
"Secondhand smoke isn't good for Ms. Shaw," Lorenzo remarked.
Eugene looked up, his cold stare softening just slightly. Without a word, he stubbed out his cigarette right on the stethoscope diaphragm still resting against Lorenzo's chest.
Lorenzo just blinked in disbelief.
"Stay out of matters that don't concern you," Eugene warned.
Lorenzo knew better than to push back. No one in their right mind would challenge Eugene now.
The CT room door opened, and a female doctor stepped out holding the scan results.
She blushed slightly when she saw Eugene but quickly collected herself and addressed Lorenzo. "No bone damage, but significant soft tissue injury. It's going to hurt for a while and take time to heal."
Lorenzo studied the scans with a critical eye. "Infection risk is high," he said seriously. "If that happens, even without... other activities causing fever, we're looking at potential fever. I recommend keeping her overnight for observation."
When Lorraine came out of the CT room, Eugene was gone.
A wheelchair rolled up in front of her, pushed by Lorenzo. "Hop in," he said with a cheerful wink. "Time to get you settled in your room."
Lorraine hesitated, her pulse quickening at the possibility of serious illness. "What's actually wrong with me?" she asked.
"Just a few scrapes on your knee," Lorenzo said, giving the wheelchair a reassuring pat. "This is just to make things easier for you. Go ahead, have a seat."
Though reluctant, Lorraine complied when she saw how earnest he looked. He wheeled her smoothly toward the elevators.
"Oh, I should introduce myself," Lorenzo added. "Lorenzo Eaton. I work here. Glad to meet you."
"I see," Lorraine murmured politely. "Nice to meet you too, Lorenzo."
Lorenzo grinned at Lorraine, puffing out his chest slightly. "If you ever need anything—headaches, a cold, or if Eugene ever needs performance enhancement—just come see me," he said with a mischievous wink.
Lorraine cocked her head, not quite grasping his teasing, but nodded earnestly. "Okay, I'll remember that."
Lorenzo chuckled to himself. 'Her innocence is downright charming. Eugene's life is clearly in for some changes with this one around,' he mused.
The elevator chimed softly as it arrived at the top floor. When the doors parted, Lorraine spotted Eugene waiting nearby. She immediately pushed up from the wheelchair and limped toward him, her face lighting up. "You waited for me?"
When she came out of the CT room, she thought Eugene had already left.
After all, he'd gone back to the Shaw residence earlier to help her—a gesture that made him seem more reliable than most. Finding him still here sent an unexpected flutter through her chest.
Eugene's eyes dropped to her knee. "Trying to lose that leg?" he said dryly. "Stay off it."
Lorraine's smile came easily. "Don't worry. I'm being good. Lorenzo wheeled me up here." She thumbed toward the elevator where Lorenzo still stood with the vacant wheelchair.
Eugene scoffed at how quickly Lorraine and Lorenzo had hit it off. He glanced at Lorenzo, his amused smirk edged with something colder.
"Oh," Lorraine added suddenly, her expression turning earnest. "He said if you ever experience any performance difficulties, you should absolutely see him about it." She blinked up at Eugene with perfect innocence.
