The past week had been pure torture for Lorraine. Her period still hadn't come, and the waiting was driving her insane.
"Should we, like, go pray or something? Maybe the gods will finally send your period," Sheila said, clearly out of ideas. If this kept up, she thought Lorraine had to go to the hospital today.
Lorraine thought, 'Either way, I have to face it. Might as well just go to the hospital and get it over with. I can't keep dragging this out.'
After lunch in the cafeteria, the two of them decided to head straight to the hospital.
They walked out, both looking drained. When they reached the school's LED screen, they saw a big crowd gathered.
"It's Eugene!" Sheila quickly pulled Lorraine over. "Look, it's really him!"
The screen was showing today's financial news, the headline practically shining—Eugene Moore Travels to Atisland and Secures Major Annual Deal for Moore Group.
On the screen, Eugene was walking through the streets of Paustine, surrounded by reporters. Next to him was a woman in sunglasses.
Lorraine couldn't see her face clearly, but with that perfect skin and killer figure, Lorraine could tell that she was definitely a head-turner.
Eugene's lips were pressed in that familiar, thin line. Even through the screen, Lorraine could feel his commanding presence.
The students were buzzing with excitement, gossiping about his wealth and the woman beside him, calling them a match made in heaven.
"Lorraine? Lorraine!" Sheila called her name several times.
Lorraine snapped out of her daze. "Oh, I'm here," she said, automatically starting to walk forward.
"Where are you going?" Sheila grabbed her arm.
"Back to the dorm to rest. What's up?" Lorraine asked.
"Aren't we going to the hospital? Let's go," Sheila said, rolling her eyes.
"Alright, let's go," Lorraine muttered, feeling even more down.
'This is all Eugene's fault,' she thought to herself. 'Why did he have to show up on the news and mess with my head right now? I almost forgot such an important thing. So annoying.'
In a quiet little hospital, a young doctor drew a vial of blood. "Come back before we close this afternoon to pick up your results," he said.
"Alright," Lorraine said.
The two girls left the hospital and found a nearby café to wait.
Lorraine couldn't even put her feelings into words. She had no idea what tomorrow would bring, and the uncertainty was driving her nuts.
Sheila patted her on the head. "Why not come up with a nickname for the baby?"
Lorraine slouched over the table. "Who's in the mood for that right now?"
If there really was a baby, she'd probably have to get rid of it.
How about something funny, like 'Cupcake' or 'Sunshine'? I bet Eugene would love it," Sheila said, tapping her chin with a mischievous look.
Lorraine rolled her eyes. "Someone as cold and serious as him? He'd probably faint if he heard those names."
"Then what kind of name would he like?" Sheila asked.
"Something fancier, I guess. Well, why are we even talking about this? Forget it," Lorraine groaned, burying her face in her arms. Still, Eugene's ridiculously handsome face kept popping into her mind.
If he found out, she couldn't even imagine how he would react. She didn't dare to think about it.
The two of them sat quietly in the café. Neither of them noticed that, just after they left, Elsie quietly entered the hospital. Waiting by the lab, she said, "Doctor, let me know when Lorraine's report is ready, okay?"
The young doctor gave her a suspicious look and pulled down his mask. "And you are?"
"I'm her sister. Just picking up her report for her," Elsie said.
"Alright, got it," the doctor said.
Later that afternoon, Lorraine stood outside the lab, feeling lost. "What do you mean someone took my test results?"
"How would I know?" an older doctor, just starting his shift, sounded irritated. "I just got here. If your report's missing, someone must've it. Don't ask me. Go to the person who was on duty before me."
Sheila had chosen this small hospital for its privacy, but she never expected things to go this way.
Lorraine had no choice but to go to another hospital and get her blood drawn again. This time, though, she'd have to wait until the next morning for the results.
The two girls dragged themselves back to school, completely exhausted.
A black Mercedes was parked outside the dorm. As soon as Lorraine got close, the driver stepped out. "Mrs. Lorraine Moore. Mrs. Flora Moore sent me to pick you up," he said politely.
"Pick me up?" Lorraine was confused. "Why?"
The Moore family had promised before the wedding that they wouldn't interfere with her studies and that their marriage would stay low-key until after she graduated.
"It's Mr. Gordie Moore's birthday today. You and Mr. Stephen Moore are expected to attend," the driver explained, handing her a gift box. "Mrs. Flora Moore asked me to bring you these clothes. Please change before we go. I'll wait for you."
It was Gordie, her father-in-law's birthday, so of course, she should be there. Besides, maybe after the party, she'd get a chance to see Stephen.
Lorraine thought for a moment and then shook her head. "No need to change. I'll go with you now."
The Moore residence sprawled along the entire prime coastline, with hundreds of rooms, exuding wealth and absolute power.
Reporters had been camped out at the gates forever. With a family like the Moores, even someone taking a sip of water or letting out a fart could make the headlines.
Fortunately, the car went straight into the garage, allowing Lorraine to steer clear of the media frenzy.
Inside, the residence was already decked out in gorgeous decorations, and a giant cake stood in the center of the living room.
Right now, the Moore family was divided into two sides: one led by Stephen and the other by Eugene.
The two sides had been at odds for years, only pretending to get along, while most people in Moore Group just stayed neutral, watching from the sidelines.
Tonight's party was for Gordie, Stephen's father, who was also Eugene's older brother.
When Lorraine walked in, the place was buzzing with fancy guests, laughter, and the clinking of glasses.
Across the room, Flora spotted Lorraine and frowned. 'Why is she showing up in a puffer jacket and jeans? Sure, it's youthful, but it's totally out of place for tonight,' she thought.
Just as Flora was about to walk over, Raquel suddenly popped up and stopped her. "Come on, Flora. Let's grab some snacks," she said with a smile.
Lorraine stayed where she was, scanning the crowd for Stephen. He was across the room, deep in conversation, not noticing her.
Suddenly, Elsie, wearing a cocktail dress, jumped onto the stage with a piece of paper in her hand.
Before anyone could react, she blurted out, "The Shaw family isn't just here to celebrate Mr. Moore's birthday. We've got big news! Congrats, Lorraine. You're expecting a child!"
The room went dead silent the second those words were spoken. Lorraine just stood there, stunned, not even thinking about how Elsie had found out. Her eyes were locked on the test results on the stage.
She realized she was actually pregnant. Her mind went completely blank, like her brain had just exploded. She couldn't even remember how to breathe. She stood there, frozen, totally lost, unsure of what to do next.
Then, all at once, everyone snapped out of it. The flood of congratulations was so loud that it could've blown the roof off. Only the Moore family stayed frozen, stiff as statues. Their faces darkened by the second.
No one knew how long it was before Lorraine finally came to her senses. By then, only the Moore family and the Shaw family were left in the room.
Lorraine stood in the middle, like she was on trial.
"Why is everyone so down? Isn't this supposed to be good news? I can't wait to meet my little nephew!" Elsie said, her eyes wide with fake innocence. "Gordie, Flora, Stephen? Why aren't you saying anything?"
"Whose kid is it?" Stephen suddenly snapped, grabbing Lorraine by the shoulders and shaking her hard.
No matter what, he was still a man. Even if he was gay, he couldn't stand being cheated on.
Lorraine stepped back, staring at her so-called husband. Out of nowhere, a wave of satisfaction washed over her, like she was finally getting back at him for all the humiliation. "Well, it's not yours," she said coldly.
The Shaw family gasped, their hands flying to their mouths, and their eyes were wide with shock.
"Lorraine, you're shameless!" Raquel trembled with rage, her voice full of heartbreak.
Lorraine thought bitterly, 'She's great at putting on a show.' Her palms were sweating, but she managed to keep her composure.
She'd thought she'd panic and fall apart, but when the moment came, she managed to keep a calm face.
Her hands tightened a little as she forced a smile. "Out of everyone here, I'm probably the last to find out Stephen's gay, right?"
'So who here gets to judge me? Who are they to shame me?' she wondered.
Flora's face immediately changed. She hurried over and pulled Stephen aside. "Lorraine, we were really wrong this time. But please, don't let this get out. As your mother-in-law, I promise I'll always have your back from now on, okay?"
Gordie stood up from the sofa. "I don't care whose kid it is. Just get rid of it. We'll just pretend this never happened. From now on, act like a proper wife," he said, his voice stern and commanding.
In his eyes, no one here was innocent. His own son was a disappointment, but he could do nothing about it. Lorraine was the family's public image, so she had to stay.
Right then, a heavy weight pressed down on Lorraine's chest. She looked at these people. On the outside, they seemed human, but inside, they were already rotten.
'Are they even human? For the sake of their so-called reputation, they think nothing of deciding who lives or dies, controlling my entire life as if it's nothing,' she thought.
She opened her mouth, wanting to say something, but before she could, the doors behind her were pushed open again.
Right then, a deep, commanding voice echoed through the room. "That's my child. Who dares get rid of it?"
The words hit everyone hard, leaving them in stunned silence.
Lorraine turned around stiffly, trying to find the source of the voice.
Eugene, who was supposed to be in Paustine, was now standing tall and imposing in the doorway. His coat collar was still cold, as if he had braved storms to get here.
Lorraine's mind went completely blank. One thought kept repeating in her head 'Has he lost his mind?' she wondered.
