"Eugene!" Even Gordie was aback.
"Why?" Eugene marched over and stopped next to Lorraine, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with her.
He looked around the room with a steady gaze. The Shaw family members' faces went from pale to ghostly, and Stephen stood there in shock.
Then he looked away, his voice as steady as ever. "The child is mine. Lorraine and I are in love. Got a problem with that?"
For a moment, no one moved. Not just the others, even Lorraine herself was completely stunned. But deep down, she knew Eugene was her only lifeline right now, so she wisely stayed quiet and didn't expose him.
"Are you tired?" Eugene asked softly, gently pulling her closer.
Lorraine hesitated for a second before leaning into his embrace. That line "we're in love" felt like a punch to her chest, even though she knew it was a lie.
"She's tired. I'm taking her home to rest. We'll talk about everything else later," Eugene said.
Everyone else was so stunned that they couldn't even move, just staring in disbelief as Eugene walked Lorraine out. Their faces shifted in shock, like they'd seen a ghost.
Stephen snapped out of it and relentlessly rushed after them. "Eugene, you can't do this!"
There were a lot of reporters outside. If they left like this, Stephen wouldn't be able to face anyone or salvage any of his dignity.
"Why not? You have someone you love, and so do I", Eugene said, pulling Lorraine protectively into his arms.
"But she's my wife!" Stephen shouted, nearly jumping out of his skin.
Eugene suddenly stopped, lowered his head, tilted Lorraine's chin up, and kissed her right in front of everyone.
The unexpected kiss left Lorraine frozen. A faint woody scent lingered in her throat. It was not exactly familiar but certainly not unfamiliar, either.
They kissed for several minutes before Eugene finally let Lorraine go. He looked straight at Stephen. "I can do this with her. Can you?"
'Are they trying to prove they're in love again?' Stephen fumed inwardly, his body stiff with tension like a wolf ready to snap, his eyes burning with rage.
He couldn't kiss Lorraine, yet she remained his wife, the one listed on his marriage license. The thought of her carrying his uncle's child hit him like a slap in the face.
"Come here. I need to talk to you alone," he said, reaching for Lorraine's hand.
Eugene stepped between them with a cool, detached look. "Your marriage is just for show. I'm the real father of her baby."
The two men stood there, glaring at each other silently. The tension was palpable, heavy in the air.
After a long pause, Gordie stood up and waved his hand. "Stephen, everyone's worn out. Let your uncle go for now. We'll sort the rest out another day."
"Dad!" Stephen protested.
"Let them go!" Gordie ordered sharply, his voice firm and unwavering.
Stephen shot them both a look full of venom, but he had no choice but to let go of Lorraine's hand.
As soon as they stepped out, Gordie suddenly spun around and slapped his son hard across the face. "Of all things, why did you have to be gay?"
Flora burst into tears, wrapping her arms around Stephen to protect him.
Stephen shot a furious look at the Shaw family. "This is all your fault!"
It was a perfect example of being too smart for one's own good. The Moore family was thrown into chaos all over again.
In the end, Gordie personally kicked out the smarty pants from the Shaw family, making it clear they were never welcome at the Moore residence again.
Raquel was so upset that she couldn't even cry, and Elsie was on the verge of losing it. She never imagined things would turn out like this.
'How could that bitch, Lorraine, end up pregnant with Eugene's kid?' Elsie wondered.
The moment they left the Moore residence, reporters surrounded them, blocking any chance of escape. By tomorrow, this scandal would be all anyone in town could talk about.
Eugene kept Lorraine close, wrapping his arms around her as they made their way to the car. Isaac didn't waste any time getting them back to Silverlake Villa.
The servants, sensing the tension, quietly slipped away, leaving just the two of them in the living room.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Eugene asked, his voice calm, almost flat.
If Lorenzo hadn't spotted her at the hospital getting blood work and decided to tip him off while he was still on his flight back, Eugene might never have known about the baby.
Lorraine could feel his anger. "I didn't think it was necessary. I'm a doctor. I can handle it myself." She clasped her hands tightly on her knees, trying to stay as calm as he seemed.
"You think you can handle this on your own?" Eugene asked, his expression darkening.
Lorraine nodded, trying to sound reasonable. "Yeah. I won't cause you any trouble." Things between them were already complicated enough. There was no way she could keep the baby.
Eugene's eyes were so cold that they felt like they could freeze her in place.
"If there's nothing else, I'm going to bed." Lorraine grabbed her small backpack and quickly headed upstairs. She was exhausted. Just talking to him made her want to fall asleep.
Eugene sat still, watching her back silently as she left.
He thought, 'She's handling everything on her own, even planning her escape. She's clearly trying not to burden me. But why does it hurt so much? Is it really her attitude that's making me this angry?'
There was no way Lorraine was getting back to campus tonight, so she headed for the guest room she'd stayed in before. Coconut was sound asleep in its cage on the windowsill. Daryl had obviously been taking good care of it.
She grabbed some clothes and was about to head to the shower, but when she turned around, Eugene was standing right at her door. She had no idea when he'd followed her.
Her heart skipped a beat, and she swallowed nervously. "What are you doing here?"
"This room doesn't get any sunlight, and the air is stuffy. Come sleep in my room," he said, walking over and taking the towel from her hands forcibly.
"No, really, I'm fine here," Lorraine protested.
'This room was beautifully decorated. There's no way it could be uncomfortable. And there's no way I'm sleeping in his room. Is he suggesting we share a bed? That's asking too much,' she thought.
"I'm not asking you," Eugene said calmly, pointing at her belly. "I'm asking the baby."
Lorraine quickly looked away, embarrassed.
"It's one thing if you want to tough it out, but you can't expect my kid to do the same," Eugene said.
He always had an answer for everything. Lorraine was silent for a few seconds and then shook her head like a scientist. "The baby can't feel anything at this stage. Not even sound."
"Says who?" Eugene crouched down in front of her, leaning in close to her belly with infinite patience. "If it can't hear me from far away, what about now? I'm closer. Should be fine, right?" His voice was soft and soothing.
Lorraine glanced down at him, seeing how focused he was, and her heart skipped a beat again. If other women saw him like this, she couldn't even imagine how many would fall for him right then and there.
"Get up first," Lorraine said.
The way he was crouching there made her uneasy. Especially when he spoke, his warm breath slipped right through her thin sweater and brushed against her stomach, making her blush and her heart race.
"But the baby hasn't answered me yet. How can I get up?" Eugene said, still deadly serious. "Maybe it didn't hear me. I'll just get a little closer."
He reached out, wrapped his arm around her waist, and pressed his handsome face right up against her belly. Each wave of his warm breath felt like an electric shock, making her whole body tingle. It was almost too much to handle.
Lorraine tried to push him away, but he wouldn't budge. All she could do was let him hold her like that.
But Eugene still wasn't satisfied. He freed one hand, lifted her sweater, and pressed a soft kiss on her belly. The heat of his lips sent a rush straight to her heart, leaving her breathless.
Lorraine trembled, barely able to stand. "Eugene, don't do this," she pleaded.
She'd never seen this side of him before, and honestly, she didn't know how to deal with it.
While she was flustered and panicking, Eugene stayed perfectly calm. Still not satisfied, he even traced her belly with the tip of his tongue.
Lorraine's legs went weak and she dropped down to her knees. He caught her with one arm, and the two of them tumbled onto the carpet together.
Eugene leaned in, pinning her beneath him as he stared into her eyes. "Lorraine, have the baby."
Lorraine froze, caught in those deep, blue eyes. They were so mesmerizing and endless that it felt like they could swallow her whole.
She panicked, but he just reached out and playfully tugged her ear, like she was a startled little bunny. "You heard me. You can't say no."
Lorraine thought he was really bossy. She bit her lip. "Why?" She needed a reason.
"The baby was an accident, but I don't mind this kind of accident," Eugene replied.
'Is that enough of a reason?' he wondered.
'So, he just doesn't mind?' Lorraine thought.
She scooted to the side. "Let me think about it," she said, her tone as calm as ever.
"It's not up for discussion. It's happening," Eugene said, tapping her nose. "Whatever you want, I'll make it happen. Want to divorce Stephen? Fine. Want to be a doctor? Sure. Whatever you want, I'll make it happen.
"But having the baby is the deal if we're working together."
Lorraine was a little dazed. She blinked, her small hand clutching the carpet. Then she looked up at his handsome face above her. "Then, Eugene, are you going to marry me?"
'A baby should have both a mom and a dad, right?' she thought.
His arm, which was braced on the carpet beside her face, paused. His gaze grew deeper, and after seriously considering her question, he finally said, "If it's about responsibility, I can do that."
"Marriage can't just be about responsibility." Lorraine wrinkled her nose. She wasn't exactly satisfied with his answer, but she couldn't say she was disappointed, either.
"What else do you want? Love?" Eugene asked, letting out a soft laugh.
"No way." Lorraine quickly waved her hand. "Who would be dumb enough to expect love from you?"
She thought, 'We're worlds apart. He's the stars in the sky, and I'm just the dust on the earth. Love was never going to be part of our story.'
Lorraine knew herself well enough not to daydream.
Eugene frowned slightly, staring at her small face. A strange discomfort twisted inside him. A woman like Lorraine, who didn't rely on him or expect his love, left him feeling lost.
"Whatever you expect, it doesn't matter. You're having this baby. Got it?" he said.
