The helicopter cruised steadily through the night sky. Lorraine was curled up in her seat, a little spaced out as she looked at Eugene sitting right next to her.
She had no idea where he was taking her this time. But with him there, she didn't even feel like asking.
Eugene was quietly flipping through the documents in his hands, the glint of his Patek Philippe watch catching the light every time he turned a page.
'That seems to be the tenth page from the end,' Lorraine silently counted. She tried to hide her gaze, not wanting him to notice. She told herself she'd stop sneaking glances when he got to the eighth page from the end.
'Eugene is so hot, especially when he's focused on work. His profile is ridiculously perfect, but he seems completely oblivious. No wonder Sheila called him a total heartthrob.
'Oh no. I should stop staring,' Lorraine thought. She quickly turned her head to look out the window. Then she let out a silent breath and pinched her thigh.
Her heart was about to jump out of her chest. After calming down, she snuck another look at him.
She told herself she'd turn away when he got to the fifth page from the end. But even as he was on the last page, she still couldn't tear her eyes away.
His gaze dropped, landing on the last paragraph, the last line, and the very last word of the document.
Lorraine barely managed to turn her head away in time, pretending she'd been looking out the window the whole time.
Eugene closed the file and walked over to stand in front of her. "Enjoying the view?"
"Huh?" Lorraine tilted her head, almost bumping into the window before quickly sitting up straight. "You mean the stars outside? Yeah, they're pretty nice, really bright."
Eugene raised an eyebrow, a small smile playing on his lips. "This helicopter is completely private—even the windows are specially treated. How exactly are you seeing stars out there? Got X-ray vision?"
Lorraine remained silent. 'I was just sneaking a peek at him. Did he really have to call me out like that?'
"You haven't answered my question. Was it a good view?"
There was no way to deny it now. Lorraine's cheeks blushed as she stammered, "I-It was okay,"
"Just okay?" Eugene crouched down, suddenly leaning in close.
His handsome face filled Lorraine's vision abruptly, making her instinctively shrink back.
"I'll let you sneak a peek. But you can't deny that I'm super handsome. Got it?"
His warm breath grazed Lorraine's face, sending her heart racing. At the same time, she couldn't help but think, 'Seriously, could he be any more full of himself?'
Suddenly, the plane jolted. Lorraine nervously tightened her grip on the seatbelt, her face going a little pale.
Eugene got up nonchalantly and sat down next to her. "It's just a little turbulence, and you're already scared?"
Lorraine lowered her head, eyes glued to her seatbelt. "I've never flown before."
"For real?" Eugene sounded skeptical.
"Of course." Lorraine let out a self-mocking laugh. "Let me tell you a joke. Before taking the SATs, I didn't even have an ID card."
Eugene's face darkened. "Is that supposed to be a joke?"
"Yep. Back then, I could only audit classes. When the SAT was coming up, my stepmom said if I didn't go to college, I'd never be able to marry up. That's when I got an ID," Lorraine said calmly.
Those memories still stung, but she forced herself to smile, to face her past head-on. She wasn't going to punish herself for other people's mistakes.
Eugene frowned, his eyes deepening. "So this really is your first time on a plane."
"Yep."
"Looks like all your firsts end up with me," Eugene said flatly.
Lorraine was stunned for a second before she realized what he meant, and her whole face went up in flames. "Are you done reading? Ready to crash?" she asked, trying to sound casual. 'Oh man, did he have to be so direct?'
"Can't sleep. I'm picky about beds." Eugene reached out and gently brushed her chin. "Did you feel that weightless moment when the plane shook?"
"Mm." Lorraine pretended to look down, trying to dodge his hand.
Eugene leaned in close, his voice a low, seductive whisper. "Ever thought about getting intimate during that zero-gravity moment?" He spoke with pure temptation—dangerous and impossible to resist.
Lorraine swallowed hard and quickly reclined her seat. "The plane's too loud. I can't hear you. Anyway, it's late. I'm gonna sleep. I'm exhausted."
She faked a yawn, shut her eyes, and turned away from him, carefully counting sheep in her head. 'Oh God, please let time fly by. I don't want any mile-high nonsense.'
Even after his voice faded, she kept her eyes shut tight. But her racing heart slowly settled into a calmer rhythm. Finally feeling safe, she was about to breathe a sigh of relief.
Lorenzo, who sat behind her, suddenly yanked off his headphones and shouted, "He just said he wants to get it on with you right here on the plane, Lorraine. Don't miss your chance."
"Wow, then you two will go full throttle," Nathan drawled. He swirled his wine glass lazily, as if he was saying, "I heard it too, but you can just ignore me."
'Why couldn't these people pretend to be deaf and blind?' Lorraine cried in her heart, wanting to just disappear. "M-maybe let's not? Aren't you scared the plane might crash?" she stammered.
"If it crashes, let's go all the way and die together," Eugene said, his grin widening. He grabbed her wrist and pulled her up, steering her toward the bathroom.
"Hey, no! Lorenzo, help me!" Lorraine clung to her seat for dear life, refusing to budge.
Lorenzo shot her a sympathetic look and put his headphones back on.
"Nathan, save me!" Lorraine was practically babbling.
Nathan didn't even spare her a glance, just downed his wine in one gulp.
Despite her struggle, she was dragged into the restroom, which was way bigger than the ones on regular planes.
With a sly smile, Eugene closed the door behind them.
Lorraine was so scared that her legs nearly gave out. "Don't come any closer. We can't do it here."
Eugene reached out and pulled her over in one swift motion.
Lorraine went stiff, like a fish dragged out of a freezer, her voice trembling. "I'm not going to cooperate."
"That won't do. If you don't cooperate, it might hurt. What should I do?" Eugene pretended to think it over seriously. "Maybe I should just knock you out first."
'Man, that's way too wild.' Lorraine lunged for the door handle and said, "It's not safe up here. I want to go back to Earth."
Eugene almost burst out laughing but managed to hold it in. He tugged her back and tossed a towel at her face. "Relax. I just brought you in here to wash your face. Why are you so nervous?"
'Wash... my face?' Lorraine swallowed hard, not quite convinced. "That's not some code for something else, is it?"
Eugene finally burst into laughter. "If you think so, I can just pin you down on this sink and give you a thorough cleaning."
Lorraine didn't dare ask anything more. She quickly wrung out the towel and started washing her face. Only then did she realize the restroom was stocked with every toiletry she could possibly need.
Eugene stood side by side with her, brushing his teeth as well. After they finished washing up, he slid open a door on the other side of the restroom.
To her surprise, it opened into a bedroom. The decor was simple but tasteful, and the bed was huge—so soft it looked like one could just sink right in.
'So all that washing up is just the prelude before getting into bed?' Lorraine's imagination ran wild, and she nearly burst into tears at the thought. "No, Eugene, we can't. Please don't."
Eugene took her by the wrist and led her inside, gently pressing her down onto the big bed. He held her wrists and brushed a feather-light kiss across her lips.
"You'll be wiped out after we land tomorrow. Get some sleep," he said softly. "Even if you wanted something tonight, I wouldn't have the time."
Lorraine froze. Before she could react, he'd already gotten up, turned off the lights for her, and walked out of the hidden bedroom, leaving her alone on the bed.
She lay there in the darkness before reaching up to touch her lips—the spot he'd kissed was still tingling, burning hot. She stayed like that for a bit, then hugged a pillow and rolled around on the big bed before finally drifting off to sleep.
In the cabin, Lorenzo heard footsteps and turned around. Seeing Eugene coming out, he pulled off his headphones and teased, "Back already? That was fast."
"Wow, that quick? Couldn't keep up, huh?" Nathan glanced down at Eugene's lower part.
Lorenzo burst out laughing. "Should we get you something to help you out?"
"Maybe he needs a supercharged energy soup or something," Nathan said, grinning.
Lorenzo smirked. "Well, can Lorraine even handle that much?"
Eugene shot them a cold look. "Cut it out. Is this really the time for jokes?"
He walked over, pulled out a small table, and opened up a file on top. "Come take a look at this."
Lorenzo and Nathan exchanged a glance, immediately dropping their playful expressions. They stood up and moved over to join him.
