The cold, pitch-black barrel of the gun was chilling and menacing. Lorraine's breath caught in her throat. She could practically see herself getting shot in the head.
She had no time to wonder when Stephen discovered them. Right now, things were clearly not in their favor.
A flash of surprise flickered in Eugene's deep eyes, but he quickly pulled himself together.
His large hand tightened around Lorraine's waist, and he looked at her. Their eyes met in the air, silent but perfectly in sync.
Even with a gun pointed at her, Lorraine somehow managed to smile. "I'm not afraid," she said.
Eugene smiled too, calm as ever. He pulled her gently closer, buttoning her shirt with deliberate slowness.
Then, he removed his own shirt and tied it around her waist to shield her from view. Each motion was measured and deliberate as if nothing else in the world mattered.
During the whole time, neither of them said a word, but their understanding was absolute. They didn't even bother to look at Stephen, who was still holding the gun.
For a moment, Stephen felt dazed, thinking, 'Am I really holding a gun, or is it just a toy? Otherwise, how could these two be so completely unfazed?'
Eugene bundled Lorraine up like a burrito, making sure she was fully covered before turning back to Stephen. "Your party? I just happened to book a room on this cruise ship. I just entered the wrong room. Sorry about that."
"You!" Stephen was completely thrown off by his excuse. He was left speechless for a second as his anger shot through the roof.
However, Kevin rushed over, patting Stephen's chest to calm him down while glaring daggers at Lorraine. His tone was dripping with sarcasm as he said, "And what exactly are you doing here?"
Since Eugene was playing dumb, Lorraine wasn't about to blow his cover. She tilted her head, looking all innocent. "Same as you. Warming someone's bed."
Kevin thought, 'Warming someone's bed? This is a wedding! It's supposed to be sacred! Why do you have to make it sound so dirty?'
A vein throbbed on Stephen's forehead. He looked like he was about to snap.
Eugene was caught off guard for a moment and then let out a low chuckle. She really did have a knack for driving people crazy, and she always managed to surprise him when he least expected it.
"Lorraine, you're still my wife. As long as I don't sign those papers, you're nothing but a tramp, messing around with him," Stephen spat out, desperate to defend his lover.
"Oh, really? Isn't that just like you two?" Lorraine glanced at the bed behind them. "Wait. To be precise, you two are in a gay relationship. So, who's really got the right to judge?"
'If you look down on me, maybe you should take a good look at yourselves first,' she thought.
Stephen's eyes blazed with fury. "You really think I won't shoot you?"
"I believe you. Go ahead. Shoot," Eugene said calmly.
The room instantly went so quiet that one could hear a pin drop.
Eugene could feel the small hand in his palm tense up, but when he looked at Lorraine, she didn't show a hint of panic.
Her calmness made Stephen hesitate. He paused for a few seconds, his gaze landing on the tiny camera in Eugene's hand.
"Want this?" Eugene offered the camera without hesitation. "Toss it in the ocean or shoot it to pieces. Your call."
Eugene was already shirtless, just wearing linen pants. His strong, broad-shouldered frame made him look even more imposing than Stephen, who was still fully dressed.
His commanding presence made it easy to forget who was supposed to be at a disadvantage. Even Kevin looked uncertain, staring at the camera. "You didn't actually record anything, did you?"
Eugene calmly withdrew his hand. "You don't want it? Then we're leaving."
Eugene reached out, pulling Lorraine's head under his arm. His large hand covered her temple, blocking the gun barrel. "Why? You want to stick around and watch them get all cozy?"
"No, for real. Their moves are awkward. They can't hang for long, and honestly, seeing two impotent men go at it from behind? Just not a pretty sight," Lorraine said, rattling off.
She was not even sure how she managed to come up with so many sharp remarks on the spot.
She really owed Sheila a thank-you for always running her mouth. She'd definitely picked up a few lines from Sheila.
Kevin nearly blew a fuse. He didn't care if people called him gay, but being called impotent was absolutely unacceptable.
"Alright, let's head back," Eugene said, giving her hand a squeeze and flashing a smile. "Stephen, are you sure you don't want this camera?" He handed it to him again quickly and decisively without a hint of hesitation.
Stephen was completely thrown off. Eugene's calm, almost indifferent demeanor didn't scream fear at all. Stephen began to wonder if they had something up their sleeve.
He couldn't help glancing out at the pitch-black sea outside the window, unable to see anything clearly. He wondered if there was some hidden setup out there.
That uncertainty made him hesitate to take the camera. It felt like a ticking time bomb. After a moment, he lowered the gun which was pressed to Lorraine's forehead slowly.
"Stephen?" Kevin asked, not understanding why he lowered the guy.
Stephen stepped in front of Kevin, watching as Eugene led Lorraine toward the door calmly. Suddenly, Stephen called out, "Lorraine."
Lorraine turned back, meeting his gaze head-on, calm and unflinching.
"Watch yourself on the way back. Out here, a lot of people end up as shark bait or get caught in storms. Who knows? You could be next," Stephen warned. His voice was soft, but the words had a cold edge to them.
Lorraine felt a sudden tightness in her chest. Without thinking, she traced a line across Eugene's palm with her pinky finger.
Sensing her unease, Eugene squeezed her hand even tighter, ready to keep moving.
But Lorraine didn't budge. After a moment's thought, she tilted her head and flashed Stephen a dazzling smile. "Maybe you should worry about burning yourself out first. With that sickly look, even an expert doctor couldn't save you."
After she finished, she silently counted down in her head, and three seconds later, Stephen's and Kevin's faces hardened as she expected.
Eugene burst out laughing and quickly led Lorraine out of the hall on the cruise ship.
Both Eugene and Lorraine knew this bluff wouldn't work for long. Stephen would snap out of it and come after them any minute. So neither of them hesitated. They headed straight for the deck.
The cold wind hit, and only then did Lorraine realize her shirt was already soaked with cold sweat. She'd said she wasn't scared, but honestly, that was just wishful thinking. She didn't know if Stephen, that maniac, would actually pull the trigger earlier.
Lorenzo and Nathan caught up with them from behind. "Did you get what you needed?"
"Yeah." Eugene fiddled with the camera, making sure everything had already been sent to his private email over the real-time backup. Only then did he toss it away.
The camera traced a perfect arc through the night and landed in the sea with a splash.
"So what now? Fog just rolled in, and our chopper will be here in a while," Nathan said, frowning, clearly annoyed by tonight's weather.
Eugene glanced out at the sea coldly, his expression unreadable. "With fog this thick, maybe a storm's coming."
His words were colder than the night breeze, and Lorraine couldn't help but look at him.
The music from the hall suddenly cut off, and a rush of footsteps came pounding their way. Maybe, just like Stephen said, someone really would die tonight.
The mood instantly turned tense and strange, like fate itself was quietly closing in on all of them.
Eugene narrowed his eyes and made a snap decision. "Lorenzo, put on a life vest and take her away first," he said, looking at Lorraine.
Hearing his decision, Lorraine wanted to refuse instantly. "What about you? Aren't we leaving together?"
Eugene bent down, grabbed an orange life vest from the floor, and pulled it over her in one go. "When I tell you to run, you run. Don't look back. Did you forget what you promised me?"
"See? Everything was set up perfectly. We could've done this without a fight, but now he's throwing the plan out the window just to save her. Unbelievable," Nathan finally muttered, unable to hold back.
He said it quietly, but Lorraine caught every word. 'So he really came this fast just to save me? Did that already mess up their whole plan?' she wondered.
For a moment, her mind went blank, her heart pounding fast in her chest. The footsteps behind them grew louder and closer. Lorraine stared at him, dazed yet determined. "Are you coming? Will you come with me?"
Eugene gave her a small smile and fastened the last buckle on her life vest. "Go to the reef from last night. Wait for me there, okay?"
There was no way that Lorraine could find the reef in the dark. The night wind was so fierce that it nearly knocked her off her feet, and her heart raced, refusing to settle to a quieter beat.
"Are we going back to the reef to keep pretending we're on vacation? It's okay, Eugene. Even if this isn't a vacation, I don't mind," she said softly, but with absolute seriousness.
For a moment, Lorraine couldn't clear the fog in her mind. All she could say was to give up on the vacation. Maybe what she really meant was that she had no regrets, even if tonight led her to the bottom of the sea.
Eugene's hand froze on the gun at his back. He looked straight into her eyes. They were clear as water, reflecting only him, pure and undisturbed.
He smiled and reached out to ruffle her hair. When she was still lost in thought, he scooped her up and tossed her hard into the sea. "Lorenzo, go!" he instructed.
With a loud splash, water exploded all around her, cutting her off from the world above. Waves blurred her vision, and the cruise ship twisted and warped in her eyes.
Lorenzo dragged Lorraine farther away, and as she struggled, she managed to glance back just once.
Eugene was already just a tiny black dot in the distance. Behind him, a woman in a white Chanel dress with long, wavy hair was closing in fast. She realized it was the mysterious "Ms. Godfrey."
