The two of them stepped out of the Moore Group building into the neon-lit streets. The cool spring breeze left Lorraine's cheeks rosy.
"I'm treating you to dinner," Lorraine said.
Eugene looked a bit surprised. "Dinner out of nowhere? What's the occasion?"
Lorraine grinned. "I just don't want to destroy the kitchen again. I made a reservation at the revolving restaurant, but I used your name. That's okay, right?"
That place was almost impossible to get into. She'd called several times and always got turned down, but then she had a lightbulb moment. She gave Eugene's name, and just like that, she got a table.
She was a little amazed at how much his name could do, but after using it, she started to feel a bit uneasy.
Eugene's face suddenly turned serious, and he looked a little unhappy.
Lorraine instantly got even more nervous, trailing behind him like a little puppy. She wanted to say something, but she didn't know how.
After a moment, Eugene suddenly burst out laughing, turned to her, and said, "Of course, it's fine. You're such a goof." There was a hint of amusement in his eyes that made her heart skip a beat.
Only then did Lorraine relax. She walked over and tugged at his sleeve. "Come on. Let's go!"
Eugene thought she seemed different tonight. The usual shyness in her eyes was gone, replaced by pure innocence, and it made him feel completely at ease.
They didn't drive, and they just walked all the way to the Delant revolving restaurant.
Lorraine followed right behind Eugene, holding onto his black coat and stepping in his shadow. He didn't say a word.
When they got there, Lorraine realized that just dropping his name not only got them a table but the whole restaurant had been cleared out for them. It was such an unexpected surprise.
Standing at the entrance, Lorraine looked a little lost. "Eugene," she said, realizing for the first time just how powerful his name was.
Eugene turned to look at her under the crystal chandelier. He was so handsome that it made her heart skip a beat.
She tiptoed closer and whispered, "If I use your name on my exams, will I get straight A's, too?"
Eugene burst out laughing, then put his arm around her and led her inside.
They sat by the window, with a perfect view of the city lights at night.
The menu was all in Delant, and she couldn't understand a thing. Eugene just smiled and said, "You order."
So Lorraine just pointed at random. The waiter looked a little surprised at her choices, but he stayed professional and didn't say anything.
The food came out quickly, and it turned out to be all kinds of soup with every color one could imagine. They were served in delicate little porcelain bowls, steaming hot.
Lorraine instantly felt awkward. "Let me go talk to them," Lorraine said, flustered.
But all the staff had already stepped away, so she had to go find someone herself.
Eugene, on the other hand, was totally relaxed. He smiled as he picked up a spoon, tasted the soup, and waved her over.
Lorraine hurried back, still a little anxious. "Is it not to your taste?"
"Try it," Eugene said, scooping up some soup with his own spoon and feeding it to her.
The cream of mushroom soup was a bit hot, and Lorraine gulped it down, her lips still wet. "It's delicious," she said.
"Then let's just enjoy it. It's actually pretty good," Eugene replied.
Since he said so, Lorraine obediently sat back down in her seat.
They took turns with the soup, somehow polishing off almost every bowl on the table. Plus, with that random bottle of red wine she'd ordered, her whole stomach felt like it was filled with water. Every move made it slosh around.
Even after all that wine, Eugene looked as calm and collected as ever without a hint of change on his handsome face. Lorraine, on the other hand, was blushing bright red, her cheeks glowing like fire in the night.
He thought it was a miracle she even remembered to pay. When the waiter brought the bill over, she fished out her bank card.
"I've got it," Eugene said, reaching for the check.
But Lorraine stopped him, her face full of determination. "Tonight, you have to listen to me, okay?"
'More plans tonight?' Eugene thought, frowning. He'd actually wanted to head back early. He still had something important to tell her. Stephen officially signed the divorce papers today. From now on, she was free and safe.
But seeing how happy she seemed, he just nodded and kept quiet.
Lorraine handed her card to the waiter to pay.
By the time they left the restaurant, Lorraine was already a little tipsy.
The street outside was buzzing with traffic. Lorraine tugged at Eugene's sleeve and pointed toward a shopping mall not far away.
Eugene followed her gaze and saw it was a mall. "Do you want to buy something?" he asked.
"Let's just go take a look, okay?" Lorraine said. Her steps were a bit unsteady, but her tone was playfully sweet.
Eugene didn't say no. As soon as they walked into the biggest mall around, someone immediately recognized Eugene. The mall's general manager rushed down from his office upstairs, looking nervous and eager to know why the big boss had suddenly shown up.
But Eugene just shot him a look, and the manager stayed at a distance, not daring to come any closer.
Since it was the weekend, the place was packed. Lorraine walked ahead, full of excitement, glancing around at everything.
Eugene moved behind her, keeping a protective hand hovering at her back so she wouldn't get bumped.
When they reached a boutique, she stopped and stared at a pair of cufflinks in the window for a long moment, and then pulled him inside excitedly. "Excuse me. I want these. Could you please wrap them up for me?"
They were obsidian cufflinks, beautifully made and bright, just like Eugene's eyes.
The shop assistant smiled warmly and quickly started wrapping them up and ringing up the sale.
Eugene was finding her behavior more and more unusual tonight. "Lorraine, where did you get the money?"
These cufflinks cost tens of thousands, and as far as he knew, the Shaw family wouldn't even give her a penny of pocket money.
Lorraine smiled softly, two little dimples appearing on her cheeks. "I won the lottery. Pretty lucky, right?"
The shop assistant had already printed the receipt. Lorraine tossed out that line and went to pay.
As she swiped her card, she quietly glanced at the glass door in front of her, catching his reflection. He was tall, handsome, and effortlessly charming.
'In my life so far, luck hasn't come around often. Meeting you is my real lottery win,' Lorraine thought to herself.
She signed her name, took the package, and walked over to him. "This is for you. You have to wear them, okay?"
Eugene glanced at the box and gave a soft, noncommittal hum.
But that was enough to make her giddy with excitement. Riding the buzz from the wine, she actually dared to reach out and take his hand.
Eugene's lips curled into a faint smile as he wrapped his hand around hers, and together they walked out of the mall.
The driver pulled the car around just as Eugene had asked earlier, and Lorraine climbed into the back seat without hesitation, with Eugene following right after her.
As the car cruised toward Silverlake Villa, Lorraine wasn't sure if it was wine or something else, but tonight felt different. She couldn't take her eyes off Eugene, her gaze glued to his face in a way that was hard to read.
Eugene was a little thrown by the way she kept staring at him. He reached over to ruffle her hair, trying to figure out what was going on.
Suddenly, Lorraine grabbed his fingers, her eyes drifting down from his face. She took in his smooth forehead, sharp nose, deep eyes, thin lips, and the faint dimple on his chin.
She took a deep breath and then suddenly dove into his arms, catching him off guard.
Eugene winced a little from the impact. Worried she might fall, he quickly wrapped his arms around her. "What's gotten into you? Your face is so red," he said.
Lorraine straddled his lap. Then out of nowhere, she wrapped her arms around his neck. To his surprise, she pressed her lips softly to his. Then she pulled away just as quickly.
As if savoring the taste, she even flicked out her tongue and smacked her lips.
Eugene froze, completely stunned by how forward she was being. He had never seen her like this before.
Before he could process it, Lorraine leaned in again. This time, she clumsily tried to part his lips with her tongue, exploring his mouth with no real technique.
Eugene's eyes softened, a faint smile tugging at his lips. Clearly, the wine had made her bolder than ever.
He slipped an arm around her waist and told the driver to raise the partition. Then he caught her wandering hand and gently squeezed her soft fingers. "Is this what you want?" His voice was low and husky, laced with temptation.
Normally, a question like that would have made Lorraine blush and stammer, but tonight she met his gaze without hesitation. "Yes," she answered, completely straightforward.
Her honesty caught Eugene off guard. He couldn't help but laugh softly as he started to unbutton her blouse, his warm breath fanning across her chest. He could feel her body responding to his touch.
"Eugene," Lorraine whispered, afraid she might forget to say it later, "thank you for everything you've done for me."
If it weren't for him, she knew she'd be living worse than a stray dog right now. She was painfully aware of that. After a pause, she went on, "Tomorrow, I'll move out of Silverlake Villa myself."
She'd thought about this for a long time. The little money she borrowed from Sheila was only enough to buy him a small gift. Tonight, she would pay him back once and for all. She had nothing else left to give.
Eugene's hand froze, the smile slowly fading from his face. His eyes turned sharp, staring straight at her. "You're leaving Silverlake Villa? Why?"
"Isn't everything settled now? I heard about Stephen when I was at the Moore Group earlier," Lorraine said.
She thought Eugene didn't need her anymore. He had Elsie now. He'd even given Elsie the keys to the villa. There was no reason for her to stay.
'So now that everything's over, is she just cutting ties and walking away?' Eugene thought.
His face darkened instantly. "Then what was all this tonight? Dinner, gifts, and now this in the car? Are you just paying me for sex?" His voice was tight with anger.
Lorraine couldn't bring herself to look at him. She reached out, slowly undoing the buttons he hadn't finished. "I don't have much money, so this is all I can give you."
