Lorraine was so frustrated. She complained inside, 'Eugene is shameless. He tricked me into that kind of intimate action again. I already told him how hot I felt, but he just refused to stop.
'He is such a jerk, a liar. I am done getting involved with him. I can't believe he did that to me at Moore Group, in his office, on the carpet.
'Halfway through, he even coaxed me to lie on my stomach. Stop, I can't think about it anymore.'
Lorraine raked her fingers through her hair, feeling like she was about to lose her mind. When she woke up, Eugene was nowhere to be found. She was wrapped in a thin white blanket, and her hair still smelled faintly of body wash.
She vaguely remembered that after she'd completely run out of strength last night, Eugene carried her into the bathroom and helped her shower. In the bathroom, he deceived her into doing it again.
Lorraine sat there in a daze for a long time, feeling like something was off. Just as she was about to think it through, her phone buzzed with messages.
Sheila: [Are you done yet? How long does it take to check the temperature?]
Sheila: [Lorraine, is Eugene on his deathbed or something?]
Sheila: [If you don't come down soon, I'm coming up to drag you out myself.]
There were over thirty unread messages, all from Sheila. The last message was sent just five minutes ago. Lorraine's heart skipped a beat. She shot up and rushed to the window.
Down at the entrance of Moore Group, Sheila's illegally parked red SUV stood out like a sore thumb.
A wave of guilt nearly swallowed Lorraine whole. She hurried to call Sheila. Her voice was small and shaky as she called, "Sheila..."
"Don't even talk to me. I'm done with you. We're not friends anymore," Sheila snapped, clearly furious.
Lorraine said, "I'm sorry."
"What were you even doing last night? Did you fall for that pretty boy's tricks?" Sheila asked, sounding like she was about to flip a table.
Lorraine thought, 'It wasn't exactly a pretty boy trap, but the end result was pretty much the same.' She raked her fingers through her hair in frustration and said, "I'll come down right now and explain everything, okay?"
Sheila said, "Then hurry up, or I'm leaving." Suddenly, she sneezed several times in a row. She said, "I think I caught a cold."
Lorraine thought, 'Sheila is always healthy. If she hadn't stayed up all night waiting for me downstairs, she definitely wouldn't have gotten sick.' She felt like a total jerk. She quickly agreed, hung up, and started looking for her clothes.
The blue dress she'd worn yesterday was nowhere to be found, but there was a neatly folded outfit on the sofa. She hesitated for a second. Thinking she couldn't exactly go out wrapped in a blanket, she walked over and picked up the clothes.
It was a dress with puffed sleeves and a vintage bow at the collar. Carrying the dress into the bathroom, Lorraine's legs were still shaky. She shrugged off the thin blanket, just about to change, when suddenly, there was a sound outside the door.
First came the sharp, bossy click of high heels. Then Lorraine heard Elsie's voice, asking, "Where's Eugene?"
Lorraine's heart jumped, and she instinctively pressed herself flat against the back of the bathroom door.
Isaac tried to stop Elsie. He said, "Ms. Shaw, Mr. Moore is in a meeting. You really can't just barge in." He knew Eugene had Lorraine staying over in the office last night, so he'd made sure not to disturb them this morning.
But Isaac didn't expect Elsie to show up uninvited. He tried to swallow his irritation. He honestly looked down on the way Elsie acted.
Isaac thought, 'Elsie has no sense of boundaries. All she did was take it upon herself to help Mr. Moore deal with a few nobodies, and now she struts around like she owns the place. She and Lorraine's personalities couldn't be more different.'
"But I'm already here, aren't I? What are you going to do about it?" Elsie shot back. She lifted her chin, strutting across the thick carpet. Her eyes landed on the office sofa, and her expression turned a little odd.
Isaac followed her gaze and nearly groaned. He thought, 'Mr. Moore used to be all about self-control, but now he is letting loose? That is a surprise.'
There were several used Okamoto wrappers scattered on the sofa.
Isaac couldn't help but let his mind wander. He thought, 'Looks like things got pretty wild last night.'
Elsie's face turned stormy. She asked, "What is this? Did Eugene bring a woman here?"
"What are you talking about?" Isaac played dumb.
Elsie didn't care at all that she was still unmarried. She jabbed a finger at the wrappers.
Her tone grew even more arrogant as she said, "Look at this. Eugene gave me the key to his place. You're his assistant, don't tell me you don't get it." By the end, she was practically shaking with anger.
Isaac didn't want to deal with Elsie. But this was still the CEO's office, he couldn't just let her run wild. After a quick pause, he calmly walked over, picked up the torn Okamoto wrappers from the sofa, and stuffed them into his pocket.
Then he said, "Ms. Shaw, did you see something just now? Want me to help you look for it again?"
Elsie asked, "Didn't you just put them in your pocket?"
Isaac said, "What pocket? I didn't put anything away. Ms. Shaw, want to check for yourself?" As he spoke, he smiled politely and raised his hands above his head, looking completely cooperative.
Elsie stomped her foot in frustration. She thought, 'This Isaac is doing it on purpose. How can I ever check a stranger's pocket?' Humiliated and furious, she yelled, "Those were Okamoto wrappers! Don't tell me you don't know what Okamoto is!"
Of course, Isaac knew. He was the one who bought them. But he kept his face blank and innocent, shaking his head. He replied, "No idea."
Elsie was thrown by his shameless act. She just pulled out her phone, found a picture, and shoved it in his face. She said, "This! I saw this just now!"
She was so angry she didn't even realize Isaac was twisting things on purpose. All she wanted was to get to the bottom of it. She pondered, 'This is Eugene's office. Could the woman he brought last night have been Lorraine?'
The thought made her feel like her heart had been yanked from molten lava and thrown into a frozen lake, burning with anger one second, and chilled to the bone the next.
Isaac glanced at the picture and replied, "What is this, a Big Bubble Gum wrapper?"
Elsie shot back, "Are you blind?"
"When Mr. Moore picked me as his assistant, he said it was because I'm sharp and always know what's up," Isaac bragged.
Hearing this, Lorraine couldn't help but snicker. Then she quickly covered her mouth. She thought, 'Eugene would never say a word like that. Does Isaac think he's a schoolgirl or something?'
Hearing Elsie get shut down, Lorraine could practically picture Elsie's furious, helpless face. She thought, 'If we were at the Shaw residence, Elsie would've been smashing dishes and tearing the place apart by now.'
Elsie was fuming, about to snap back, when she heard a noise from the bathroom. Her expression changed instantly, and she stormed over.
Isaac's heart skipped a beat. He quickly stepped in front of Elsie. He said, "Ms. Shaw, that's Mr. Moore's private bathroom. You really shouldn't go in there."
Elsie stomped her foot, as bossy as ever. She said, "I'm his girlfriend! Why can't I go in? I'm going in to check!"
"There's nothing in there," Isaac insisted.
Elsie said, "I don't believe you."
Suddenly, a commanding voice came from the doorway, saying, "If you don't trust what he says, then surely you'll believe me."
Elsie turned around. Upon seeing the person, she looked nervous. She called out, "Dad."
Zackery strode over and grabbed Elsie by the hand. Then he nodded to Isaac and said, "Sorry, Isaac. My daughter's been spoiled by her mother. She doesn't even look where she is before barging in like this."
Isaac just smiled and stayed quiet.
Zackery continued, "I'll take her out right now."
"Dad, there's a woman in the restroom," Elsie protested, thinking it was probably Lorraine.
"Enough! Do you have any sense? Is this the time or place for that?" Zackery snapped, dragging Elsie away.
Isaac kept his polite smile until the two of them left, then finally let out a sigh of relief. He thought, 'If Mr. Moore found out about this mess in the CEO's office, I would be out of a job for sure.'
He turned and tossed the wrappers into the trash. Just then, the restroom door opened, and he saw Lorraine standing in the doorway.
Lorraine still looked a bit pale. Isaac walked over, this time genuinely respectful. "Would you like to rest a little longer?" he asked.
Lorraine replied, "No, that's alright. Where are my clothes? I want to head out."
Isaac said, "Mr. Moore had me send them to the dry cleaners first thing this morning. They probably aren't ready yet. Maybe you could wait a bit longer?"
He glanced at the clock on the wall. He assumed, 'About half an hour left, and the meeting should be wrapped up by then.'
"No need," Lorraine said, feeling anxious. She just wanted to get downstairs and meet up with Sheila as soon as possible.
Isaac asked, "Is there anything else you need? Should I bring breakfast up for you?" He switched smoothly from top assistant to butler mode, not missing a beat.
Lorraine shook her head and said, "No, I'm good."
Isaac asked again, "Are you sure you don't want anything?" He was still racking his brain for a way to keep Lorraine here.
Lorraine had already opened the door and stepped out. The office was thick with Elsie's signature, overpowering perfume, and Lorraine found it pretty awful.
Luckily, everyone on this floor was a total pro; no one even looked up at any noise, which made Lorraine feel a bit more at ease as she walked out.
Her legs were still shaky, but she tried to walk faster. As she passed a small glass conference room, she caught a glimpse of Eugene, confidently addressing the shareholders.
It was just a glance. She was about to leave, but something suddenly felt off. She stopped, turned, and stared straight into the room.
Eugene had changed into a blue shirt and charcoal gray tailored trousers, standing tall with confidence.
But that wasn't what caught Lorraine's attention. She thought, 'I remembered his left arm was supposed to be injured, so why is he now lifting it so easily, moving as if nothing is wrong?'
