Sheila had called Lorraine several times, but there was no answer, which made her a bit irritable. She tossed her phone onto the passenger seat, feeling like she should just let it go, but she couldn't bring herself to do it.
She thought about going to the Moore Group to find her, but the receptionist had smiled sweetly and turned her away multiple times, insisting that an appointment was necessary to see the president. 'Appointment, my foot,' she wondered.
The decorative paintings at the entrance of the Moore Group had started to grate on Sheila's nerves. Just then, a guy darted out from the roadside. It was Lorenzo.
Dressed in a shirt and jeans, he looked young and energetic, quite different from the image of a doctor, and he was heading into the Moore Group. But even in different clothes, he still looked incredibly annoying to Sheila.
With nowhere to vent her frustration, Sheila slammed her foot on the gas pedal and the car roared forward.
The rearview mirror barely grazed Lorenzo's sleeve, causing him to jump back in alarm.
There was a crack. Something had shattered, and he distinctly heard it—it was his ankle.
Lorenzo felt like crying, beads of cold sweat popping out on his forehead. He had just come to find Eugene for something. 'Damn it. What's the deal with this red SUV suddenly charging at him?' he wondered.
The car stopped ahead, and the door swung open. Lorenzo struggled to his feet, ready to confront the driver. But as soon as he glanced over, he was momentarily speechless.
The girl who got out of the car looked to be in her early twenties, with a chic short haircut and bright, lively eyes.
She wore a red big-mouth monkey T-shirt, a denim mini-skirt, and white canvas shoes, exuding energy with every step. She was the girl who had left the hospital with Lorraine earlier, but he hadn't really noticed her back then.
Lorenzo was so captivated that he forgot he had just been hit by her car.
Sheila got out of the car and strode up to Lorenzo, standing right in front of him. "Idiot, I hit you on purpose just now. Remember. That's what you get for sticking your nose where it doesn't belong."
After a moment's thought, she rattled off a string of numbers. "My name is Sheila. This is my number. If you have any grievances, come find me. Fool."
She had always been the type to settle every score and wasn't afraid of retaliation.
With that, she got back in her car and drove off, planning to come back for her after Lorraine called.
Lorenzo stood there, dazed, clutching the piece of paper, breathing in a lungful of car exhaust. Then he looked up at the sky—it was so blue, and the rain was so clear. 'Getting hit this time felt worth it,' he wondered.
He quickly repeated the phone number to himself in his mind. With his photographic memory, he had it memorized in no time.
'Sheila, huh? What a nice name. Even when she bullies me, she does it with such flair and grace,' he thought.
At the same time, at the Shaw residence, Raquel was taking a nap when she heard quite a commotion downstairs. She immediately got up to see what was going on. One glance almost gave her a heart attack.
Zackery dragged Elsie home. She was standing in the middle of the living room, crying. Zackery was furious, and with a swipe of his hand, he slapped her. She fell straight to the floor, crying even louder.
Back when Lorraine was around, it was always Lorraine who got hit. Now it was Elsie. Raquel rushed downstairs in a panic. "What's going on? You all left just fine."
"Ask your daughter," Zackery said, veins bulging on his forehead in anger. "This morning, she went to Eugene's office and made a huge scene. Does she have any sense of shame?"
"Really? That's impossible," Raquel said.
"How could it be impossible? I saw it with my own eyes," Zackery said.
"Honey, tell me what happened." Raquel quickly squatted down and wiped away Elsie's tears. Elsie's delicate face was red and swollen, which made Raquel's heart ache.
Elsie sniffled and recounted the whole story, ending with, "It must be that little tramp Lorraine. She seduced Eugene."
"So what?" Zackery bellowed. "Even if it is her, what of it? You've had so much time and still can't get rid of a Lorraine, and instead, she's the lead.
"And you? You run to that kind of place and make a scene? What were you even doing there? Trying to catch someone in the act? What gives you the right to do that?"
His chest heaved violently. His cruel demeanor didn't resemble a father at all. He didn't have much affection for either Lorraine or Elsie. Elsie had it better because she was doted on by Raquel. Lorraine was the most pitiful.
Zackery had no sons, so these two daughters were his stepping stones to climb the social ladder. Whoever threatened his career got a beating.
Now, Eugene had finally started to warm up to the Shaw family.
When Zackery occasionally visited the president's office to ingratiate himself, although he still couldn't get through that door, Isaac's attitude had improved just a bit compared to before.
It had finally started to pay off, but Elsie, that clumsy girl, almost ruined it all.
Seeing how furious he was, Raquel didn't dare to persuade him anymore.
She quickly helped Elsie to her feet. "I'll take her to wash her face first. You calm down and talk it through. Your health is the most important thing. You know that, right?"
Her gentle words finally had some effect. Zackery glared at her harshly. "You should teach her a good lesson."
"Okay. We'll be right down," Raquel said, tugging on Elsie's sleeve and leading her upstairs.
Once upstairs, Raquel applied ointment, cooing softly as she settled Elsie into bed. With a gentle touch, she brushed her daughter's cheek. "Are you sure it's Lorraine?"
"Yes, I'm sure it's her." Elsie's hatred had flooded her heart like a tidal wave, her hands almost crushing the bedsheet.
"It seems she hasn't learned her lesson well enough, or else she wouldn't dare to compete with you for a man." Raquel's eyes darkened, her expression turning vicious. "Did Eugene know about your visit to the office today?"
"He probably doesn't," Elise said.
"Then don't mention it. Stay home and recover for the next few days, and treat him the same way you always have. All the city's elite know you're his girlfriend now.
"The news must have reached his ears by now, but he hasn't denied it. Doesn't that mean something?" Raquel had some sense in her.
Elsie thought for a moment. "It's because the Shaw family is still useful to him?" She realized it after a while.
"If so, then we should seize the opportunity even more. Don't wait until he's no longer useful and then regret it," Raquel covered her with the blanket.
"Rest well. I'll handle your father, and I'll take care of Lorraine. Don't worry," Raquel said.
Elsie finally smiled a little, then frowned and hissed in pain.
"What's wrong?" Raquel's heart ached, and she quickly turned back.
"Nothing." Elsie adjusted the fake nose in her nostril. It seemed to have been knocked crooked by Zackery's slap earlier. It really hurt.
'It's all Lorraine's fault. I've never been hit in my life, and today I got slapped hard by Dad because of that tramp. I'll remember this,' she thought.
Elsie pulled the blanket over her face and mumbled, "Mom, you're sure that getting rid of Lorraine won't go wrong, right?"
"Rest easy. I've already figured it out. This time, no one can save her," Raquel said.
When Lorraine woke up, it was already dusk outside the window. She sat up, and the suit that had been covering her slid off. Surprised, she looked up at Eugene.
He was standing by the window, his back to her. His upright figure seemed like a wall blocking out the storm outside, unshakable. Hearing her movement, he turned his head. "Awake? Time to go home."
His first words were a dismissal. Lorraine bit her lip, picked up the suit, and handed it to him. Eugene took it and casually draped it over a chair. "Still not leaving?"
"Isaac went home to collect some clothes. He asked me to drive you to your resting place," Lorraine said.
"No need." Eugene refused her flatly. "Otherwise, you'll accuse me of deceiving you or bullying you again."
"No, I won't." Lorraine quickly waved her hands, regretting her impulsiveness earlier. She'd assumed he was fine because he hadn't his medicine, but now she recognized her own faulty memory.
She punched her head, like a silly rabbit who had lost its carrot.
Eugene watched her actions and his tone remained gruff. "Just remember that this was your idea. I'm not forcing you."
"I've thought it through," she nodded and said, her eyes bright and sincere, clearly admitting her mistake.
"There was someone supposed to take care of me, but that person didn't come, so I'll reluctantly agree," he said petulantly, making a conclusion.
Lorraine was aback. Her chest suddenly felt tight. 'Was the person supposed to take care of him Elsie?' she wondered, biting her lip and falling silent.
"Changing your mind again? Feeling reluctant?" Eugene raised an eyebrow. "Then you can leave now."
"No, when can we leave? Where are we going?" She actively shifted the topic, lowering her eyes.
Her long, curly eyelashes concealed her inner thoughts. "Now." Eugene decided.
Lorraine turned around and quietly began to pack her things.
Half an hour later, the two of them left the Moore Group, maintaining an awkward distance that seemed odd to onlookers.
The driver was already waiting at the entrance. They got in the car and rode in silence the whole way.
Lorraine thought Eugene would take her back to the Silverlake Villa, but she was completely surprised when he brought her to a place that was so unfamiliar.
It was so unfamiliar that she thought someone of his high status would never set foot there in a lifetime.
After getting out of the car, she stood behind him in astonishment, somewhat uncertain. "Is this our destination?"
