They slept straight through to evening, skipping dinner. Starving, Sheila dragged Lorraine out to find something to eat.
Downstairs, they found the dorm entrance swarming with people. Even the dorm supervisors had come out to gawk. "Which brat is trying to hit on our girls?" one of them asked.
"I don't know," the other replied, crunching chips. "I love watching these punks strike out."
Whistles and catcalls broke out. Someone had lit rows of colorful candles outside, forming glowing hearts. The scene was as romantic as fireflies on a summer night.
College kids were used to cheesy proposals. Once, a guy rode a white horse on campus to propose and got shut down on the spot.
Sheila and Lorraine pushed through the crowd. Then Sheila stopped short.
"What's wrong?" asked Lorraine.
"That black car looks familiar," Sheila said, pointing. "By that big tree across the street. Do you see it?"
Lorraine looked over. A black Rolls-Royce idled there, like a silent fortress in the dark. She couldn't see the license plate or who was inside.
"Is that Eugene's car?" Sheila squinted. "It looks like..."
Lorraine's heart skipped. She looked away. "No way. You're overthinking. There are so many rich people in Auretian. That car isn't his alone." Her voice was quiet and glum.
"My bad," Sheila said, tugging her toward the gate. "Let's eat. After that, I'll take you somewhere fun."
"Okay..." Lorraine's reply was cut off as someone blocked her path.
A slim arm barred her way. Looking up, she saw Henry.
He stood there primly, face red, eyes bright behind his black-rimmed glasses. "L-Lorraine, do you like it?" He pointed to the candles. "I prepared this... specially for you."
Lorraine was surprised. "Henry..."
She thought, 'Is he the mastermind behind the proposal? This was so... cheesy.'
"If you like it, will you be my girlfriend?" asked Henry.
Right in front of everyone, Henry dropped to his knees, grabbing Lorraine's hand with a lovesick look. "I saw you in student council back then. I couldn't give you a good life, so I buried my feelings.
"But after years of working, I still can't forget you. Yesterday, when I saw you again, I realized you're even more adorable. Please, be with me."
Lorraine's head buzzed. Her hand was clamped tight by Henry. This was too much for her to process. She'd even forgotten his face. This was all too sudden...
She just caught a ride with him once. They'd barely spoken in the car. This was way too creepy.
Sheila stood stunned beside her and couldn't react for a moment.
Someone in the crowd yelled, "Say yes. Say yes."
"Lorraine, marry him. He's a good man."
"Be his girlfriend."
"Henry, Henry..."
Cheers erupted, people chanting Henry's name.
He was a famous alum, a model student, now with a good job. He used to be an ex-vice president of the student council and had a reputation here. Everyone was there for the show.
Lorraine felt dizzy. The candles blurred, wax fumes making her head spin.
She tried pulling Henry up, but he wouldn't budge. He'd stay kneeling till she agreed.
Students crowded closer, blocking out the air.
In the black car nearby, Eugene watched through the crowd. The atmosphere was stifling. Isaac, in the front seat, didn't dare breathe, sneaking glances at Eugene via the rearview.
Eugene always wore a poker face. His cold eyes could make anyone tremble. No one dared meet his gaze.
Eugene sat rigid in a black shirt, blending into the night. He'd watched the whole proposal. Now the crowd blocked his view of Lorraine. He couldn't see her response.
His brow furrowed. Fingers on his knees curled, knuckles whitening.
Seconds later, some idiot student wheeled out a speaker blasting a messy love song. What trashy noise.
Eugene's sneer made the driver and Isaac shiver.
Soon, the crowd went quiet and then burst into disappointed groans.
"Lorraine, why not?"
"Henry is so good..."
"What a pity..."
Then Sheila pulled Lorraine through the crowd, striding away.
Eugene's palms on his knees relaxed. His lip twitched upward.
Isaac saw the danger fade slightly and spoke, "Mr. Moore, Henry is in our finance department."
"Is he?" The Moore Group had over ten thousand employees. There was no way Eugene could remember them all. Eugene's eyes narrowed slightly as his gaze turned back toward the scene.
The crowd had dispersed, leaving Henry alone among the candles, shoulders hunched, head down, utterly dejected.
An engine roared behind him. Before he could turn, the black Rolls-Royce peeled past, crushing every candle in its path.
The night went pitch-black again.
A week later, the internship coordinator, Lucia, called the class together.
Holding envelopes, she stood at the podium. "These internships were fought for by the faculty. Cherish them. Stay committed, near or far."
Summer break was near. Internships were finally set.
A classmate elbowed Lorraine. "I don't want to go far. If it's too remote..."
"It doesn't matter to me," Lorraine said, glancing at the envelopes in Lucia's hands. She had no idea where she'd been assigned. "Near or far, I'll be following doctors in a hospital. The key is to learn something."
"I wish I had your attitude," the chubby, round-faced girl, Shirin Taylor, said. She didn't want to rough it in the boonies. "If mine's far and yours is close, can we swap?"
Lorraine thought for a second. "Sure."
"I know you're the best." Shirin blew her a kiss.
Lucia handed out envelopes. Lorraine got hers last. "Lorraine, this is yours."
It was as if to ensure there were no mistakes that she was given hers last.
Lorraine murmured, "Thank you."
Shirin wailed, "Mine's in a small town! I don't want to go..."
Lorraine comforted Shirin and then opened her envelope.
A thin paper fluttered out. It read, "The Moore Group Medical Wing."
Bold black letters coiled around her heart. The frustration she'd pushed down flared up again.
The Moore Group. She believed it was no coincidence.
She didn't want to think about who arranged this either.
Taking a deep breath, she turned to Shirin. "You don't want the small town? Let's s"
Shirin's eyes lit up. "Really? For real?"
Lorraine nodded. "Yeah."
Shirin cheered for a moment and then hesitated. "It's super remote. Patients might be tough. Are you sure you will swap with me?"
Shirin had just seen that Lorraine's original internship was at the Moore Group. It was everyone's dream internship. She didn't know why Lorraine would give it up so easily.
"I'm sure. I don't mind," Lorraine said, taking both envelopes. "Let's ask Lucia to switch."
"Thank you! I owe you one." Shirin hugged her. "After we switch, I'll treat you."
Lorraine laughed, "Don't mention it. You're also helping me."
Shirin was baffled. She felt like she'd won the lottery and kept saying, "I'll treat you to meals. Our internships start in three days. I'll treat you every day till then. I know all the best spots!"
She was a total foodie.
Lorraine laughed, "Okay, deal. If we swap, you're buying my meals."
"Deal." Shirin was jumping up and down. "I'm going to have an internship in the Moore Group. I heard there are a bunch of cute guys there, right?"
