Lorraine was bewildered by Eugene's question, her heart pounding erratically. She squatted down a little helplessly, intending to pick up the trash, but in a moment of distraction, her finger was pricked by a shard of glass.
A droplet of blood immediately welled up. Lorraine let out a muffled grunt, curling her finger back into her palm, avoiding his gaze.
"Show me your hand," Eugene said, frowning as he squatted down, extending his hand in front of her. His tone was indifferent, yet there was an unmistakable firmness in it.
Lorraine stared at his dry palm and turned her face away. "No, it's fine."
Ignoring her, Eugene reached out and grasped her shoulders, pulling her up from the floor. He pinned her against the wall, her back pressing against the cold surface.
Before Lorraine could even struggle, Eugene had already reached for her arm. "Let me see the injury," he commanded, his tone even more forceful.
His handsome face was taut with tension, his voice devoid of warmth, and his gaze was so cold it felt like it could freeze someone into an icy hell.
The grip on her shoulders tightened so much that her face turned pale.
Lorraine felt an irrational fear, yet she dared not try to break free. She looked up at him, her face pale. "I'm fine. It doesn't matter. My cut doesn't matter.
"None of what happened just now matters. You don't need to concern yourself with it."
She used almost all her strength for that last sentence. Her hand, hidden behind her back, clenched tighter. Glass shards had already pierced her fingertips, sinking deeper and deeper. The pain was indistinguishable between her hand and her heart.
Eugene stared at her, his breathing growing heavier. The anger in his eyes was first ignited by her nonchalant words, then quickly spread like wildfire, almost as if it could incinerate her very being.
"I hope what you say doesn't matter is truly of no consequence. Otherwise—" He smiled, gradually relaxing his grip.
By the time he released the last finger, a cold, sharp gleam appeared in his eyes. "Since you seem to enjoy enduring things, then endure them alone."
With a flick of his arm, he pushed her away and strode out of the ward, his expression so stern it was intimidating.
Lorraine stood there, dazed, her strength slowly ebbing away. The glass was embedded deeper into her flesh, and more blood seeped out, like a cinnabar mole resting on her fingertip, or a tear.
Eugene emerged from the ward, and no one dared to stop him. Everyone gave him a wide berth.
Elsie had been anxiously waiting by the elevator. When she saw him approaching, she didn't dare speak but followed behind him.
However, as soon as they entered the elevator, Eugene raised his hand and pinned her against the elevator wall. Elsie was terrified inside, but she didn't dare show it.
Eugene stared at her, his eyes filled with inscrutable emotions. "Since I'm keeping a woman by my side, why can't I have one who is obedient? Don't you think so?"
Elsie couldn't fathom his thoughts and didn't dare respond, let alone resist.
Eugene slowly curled his lips into a smile that made her heart flutter. "Let me pamper you like crazy, okay?"
Elsie gulped. She had dreamed of this scene countless times, and just dreaming about it was enough to make Elsie overjoyed.
But now that it was actually happening, she was terrified. Yet Elsie still didn't dare to resist. Under his gaze, she slowly and gently nodded her head.
Everyone in the medical office knew what had happened in the ward, and they were all curious about Lorraine but dared not ask.
Under the eerie atmosphere, the afternoon finally came to an end. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief and went home.
Shirin followed behind Lorraine. She was somewhat carefree, but she could tell that Lorraine wasn't happy, so she remained silent.
The two of them had just clocked out and hadn't even left the Moore Group building when they were bewildered by a group of people who suddenly appeared.
There were both men and women, all dressed in black uniforms, each holding a small box of different styles and colors. They entered through the main door, their expressions stern and without a word, and they took the VIP elevator upstairs.
Shirin was curious and grabbed someone nearby to ask a few questions. The person readily told her everything.
"Mr. Moore called them over. They're salespeople from jewelry stores. They've been coming and going all afternoon, almost emptying the largest jewelry store in town," the person said.
She was a deputy manager of some department and still looked wistful after speaking. "And I heard the people from the clothing stores are on their way too."
"Why does Mr. Moore need so many jewels?" Shirin blurted out before realizing what she'd said. "Could it be that these things are for—"
"Yep, of course they're for Ms. Elsie Shaw. Who else?" the deputy manager said, both envious and regretful. "Mr. Moore has never been this generous to anyone before.
"It looks like he really loves Ms. Shaw. I heard that this afternoon, Mr. Moore didn't do any official business at all. He spent the whole time in his office helping Ms. Shaw pick things out."
'Can he really do all that for Elsie?' Shirin thought to herself. She rolled her eyes inwardly and glanced at Lorraine out of the corner of her eye. Fortunately, Lorraine looked fine.
A few seconds later, just as expected, the people from the clothing store arrived.
There were more than ten of them, bringing a large number of standing wardrobes filled with clothes that an average employee would have to save an entire year's salary to afford just one piece.
The female employees watched the salespeople head upstairs with a mix of envy and jealousy.
"Let's go. The top floor has been cleared out. Tonight, it's only for Mr. Moore and Ms. Shaw. No one else is allowed upstairs, even those working overtime downstairs," someone else added as a reminder.
Employees who weren't working overtime quickly left.
Shirin quietly took Lorraine's hand. "How about we call Sheila tonight and go out for a nice meal together? I heard there's a new place that just opened."
Shirin always had the city's food map memorized and updated in real time. Finding a good place to eat was never a problem for her.
Lorraine forced a smile and took out her phone. "Sure, I'll give her a call."
"Lorraine?" Alice came rushing down from the medical office elevator, looking extremely relieved to see Lorraine still at the company entrance. "You haven't left yet? That's great."
"What's wrong?" Lorraine asked, puzzled.
"I just got a call. My kid has a high fever and is really sick. I have to go home, but I was supposed to be on duty tonight," Alice explained.
She was in charge of the medical department's miscellaneous tasks, and her evening shift meant staying in the office, unable to leave.
By the time she finished speaking, Alice was almost frantic.
"I'll cover for you," Lorraine said without hesitation.
"Really? Thank you so much," Alice said gratefully.
"There's nothing you can do when your child is sick. You should hurry home," Lorraine comforted her.
After seeing Alice off, Shirin sighed heavily, "You shouldn't have agreed. Too bad, no delicious food for you tonight."
"We can always eat out another day. You go ahead and find Sheila. Tell her I'm fine here," Lorraine said with a smile.
Shirin glanced at the wound on Lorraine's finger, which hadn't been treated yet, and decided to quietly drop her last comment. "I'm off. I'll bring you something yummy tomorrow."
"Okay, bye." Lorraine waved at her, then turned and walked back to the elevator to take over Alice's shift.
Lorraine had her dinner in the cafeteria. She had barely sat down when she saw Henry, looking earnest as ever.
Lorraine was starting to feel overwhelmed and wondered if she should just have a clear talk with him. But Henry wasn't doing anything wrong at the moment, and this place didn't seem quite right for such a conversation.
Lorraine bit her lip and silently pushed back the can of coffee Henry had just handed her. "No, thank you."
"I'm working late too. How about we spend it together? I can even give you a ride home afterward." Henry suggested.
"You're in the finance department, and I'm in the medical office. Unless something unusual happens, you wouldn't have any reason to come to my department," Lorraine said seriously.
But Henry didn't seem to understand Lorraine's polite refusal. Instead, he leaned in excitedly. "We can be together. I'll bring my reports to your place and work there, okay?"
Lorraine was speechless for a moment.
"Did you hear?" A small burst of gossip came from the next table. "Ms. Shaw actually accepted all the things Mr. Moore had sent over today, without leaving a single item behind."
"No way," another female clerk's eyes widened as she said. "There were at least eighty pieces of jewelry. Can you imagine how much that's worth?"
"And those clothes. I heard almost everything from the latest fashion show is here, and she took it all. Oh my—"
"The total value must be over 3 million dollars, right?"
"Not just that. The jewelry alone is worth over 10 million."
"To throw away a fortune just to win a beauty's smile. Mr. Moore really does pamper her."
They all grew more envious by the moment.
"Lorraine?" Henry noticed Lorraine was lost in thought and called out to her, then mustered up the courage to say, "Do you like any clothes or jewelry? I-I can buy them for you.
"The ordinary ones are within my means. And when my situation gets better, I'll get you the good ones, okay?"
'Has he already started daydreaming about the future?' Lorraine thought. She was completely speechless. She pursed her lips, got up, cleared her tray, and walked back to the medical office without a word.
She didn't even hear Henry calling her for a long time.
When Lorraine got to the office, she wanted to get a glass of water. She went straight to the water dispenser and took a gulp, only to realize it was boiling water.
The pain made her feel like she was being torn apart inside. She leaned on her desk for a long time, managing not to cry out and silently enduring the pain.
The phone on her desk suddenly rang. It was the first extension, 001, which clearly had some prestige.
The caller was unknown, but the phone kept ringing as if it would never stop until Lorraine answered.
